Got a lot of consonance in that prospective title. Anyhow, my idea is thus. A serious coin collector buys some rare coin or other for $20K. In fact, this is the first time he's bought a coin for more than $100. He gets an email from the seller saying, "Just in case you bought this for scrying, just thought you might want to know that there's a power-unlocking combination if you stack it between a canadian penny and an Indian Head penny." The rather confused coin collector does end up sticking the expensive coin between the two coins.

Not sure exactly what happens next. I will say, however, that he soon finds out that every coin ever made (as well as the most bills) is actually designed for use in spells. Thanks to his unlocked power, he can use them. The different countries have different specialties. The reason coin collectors get so excited about certain coins is usually because new spells have been discovered which use them. The main reason war hasn't broken out amongs the coin collectors in attempts to seize the coins is because US pennies act to protect people from magic. However, the protagonist discovers in his collection a coin which breaks through such protection...and that the French currency mages specialize in sex spells.

Why make it so obvious? From what you've written here it sounds like you have the germ on an idea in the making. Perhaps the erotic stuff in the story can happen as he tries to find out what unlocks the spells or even in the search to find out that coins have powers other than just purchasing power. I don't think you want to give everything away in the first paragraph by the new owner getting an e-mail with the combination. I think you could build a decent erotic story just in the process of them trying to find the secret.

Perhaps if the number of pennies discarded in the US that would increase the French's ability to convert Americans into some sex slave. I would throw in the danish currency for turning the world into stoners.

Keep the ideas flowing.

Agreed, but there needs to be some reason for him to suspect the spells exist in the first place. The basic idea is that, once the powers are unlocked, it is *VERY* easy to cast spells so long as the correct coins are available. In fact, every coin is usable in one spell just by itself. Hmmm. Maybe the reason he was willing to pay $20K for the coin was that had (still not sure how) discovered the existence of magic and suspected the coin was needed. Some of the other bidders also suspected but he had more faith (and money) than they did.

You've just provided an interesting explanation for why some legislators are in favor of retiring the penny whereas others are not.

Now, somebody write this sucker!

One part that might be difficult to pull off would be the "conspiracy" portion of this. You're suggesting that most coin collectors--a large number of people in absolute numbers, if not percentage of the population--are in on this conspiracy. The problem isn't how your man would eventually find out about the magical properties of coins, it's that he was somehow ignorant of this widely-held "secret" in the first place.

Maybe in some way reducing the scope of coins that are magical would help with this?

Still, the idea of coin collectors going to war is almost irresistable.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth. (You knew that was coming eventually. Now the suspense is over.)

Conspiracies are not necessarily made up of a large number of people. In this case, some (but *not* most) coin collectors are aware of the magic. Of course, some of the coin collectors who are willing to spend large quantities of $$$ on rare coins for magical reasons rather than collecting reasons. This does explain why rare coins can be so valuable :p . Anyhow, the conspiracy is powerful enough to have had a hand in the production of every coin ever minted. One should mention that part of this strength comes from the fact that the conspiracy members can use spells to enhance their influence. In fact, the original reason so many cultures used coins as currency was because the coins were all enchanted. In ancient times, gold was well known as one of the more powerful spell components. This is still somewhat true but other elements are also useful for spells. Anyhow, the magicians can only exert so much influence. People would probably notice if gold coins started getting minted again.

There, some plotholes have been filled. I really like the idea of it being EVERY coin. Well, except the toy money.
