Loren felt the sharp sting of the cane against her back as tears trailed down her cheeks. She did what she had been trained to do. She went out of her body. For a moment she had the impulse to reach out and clear the whole room of the women and men who were watching her punishment. Than again she wasn't strong enough to kill everyone in the room and furthermore, she would be drained, weak and probably pass out from the mental drain. Than she would be hunted and killed for murdering the Church leaders. No, she will take her punishment and learn from it. Just like the other punishments.

Loren wasn't like the other children. She wasn't raised with parents who were religious. Infact, unlike most of the other Miracle Children she was taken in when she was 7. Maybe, if she had been taken when she was 3 like the others she wouldn't be so rebellious.

Her parents had been gypsies roaming the world, seeing the sights, loving everyone and everything. Loren hadn't realized they were considered 'Outsiders' and was hunted by the church for not believing. Any nonbelievers were to be killed on sight. Later, in her studies, Loren learned this was because of the Holy Wars and a way to eradicate anymore wars was to get rid of all nonbelievers.

Her family was hiding in a small room waiting for the night so they could escape in the dark. Loren knew something was wrong she just didn't know what. Her parents wouldn't say what was going on just for her and her sister to be quiet and be ready to go at a moments notice. Her parents had even made it seem like an exciting spy game. Unfortunately, the Church had found them and Loren couldn't control it. She had used her mind and took out all heartbeats that weren't her family in the vicinity. She then passed out.

When Loren awoke she knew she was lucky to be alive. She should have died. They used one of the other children, a healer, to keep her alive. The church saved her, but would never tell her what happened to her parents or to her little sister. 16 years later she had more control over her abilities, she had forgotten what her parents or sister looked like, and she was loyal to the church. She followed their orders. She prayed daily. She never cursed, smoke, drink, or had any relations out of the church. Still she was considered rebellious for wanting more than just this life. Using her abilities gave her massive headaches. Sometimes putting her in a coma-like stasis for days. She wanted to run away and pretend like she wasn't one of the Chosen few. She didn't want to kill anymore.

Today's punishment was for telling the High Priest no. He had told her to kill an innocent child, whom he claimed was not innocent because of his parents. She was to kill the baby, but leave the parents unharm so they could mourn. Loren couldn't see how a baby could be evil. She had argued the point and when he gave her a command, something she would be obligated to do, she simply shook her head and left. She never did what he asked and for this she was to be punished. She had to learn rules, the order of things, and her place.

So she was to be caned 100 times.

Loren didn't think she was going to make it to 100 without passing out. The pain was too much. Too intense. Darkness wouldn't claim her and at 100 strikes she stood with her back split and bleeding. Her head was raised, her chin high as she focused on the pain. This will help her stay strong. This will give her strength. Her knees buckled, but she locked them standing tall. Her shirt was on the ground and she saw the Priest eye her half naked form before he sneered at her. She gave prayer and thanks for the physical reminder of her place and slowly walked up the rounding staircase to her room. These wounds would heal and add more scars to her back. She laid on her stomach on her bed and let the tears finally fall.

The Rome capital city

Alex watched the hover bikes zoom past and slid off of the metal ladder. He checked to make sure the coast was clear before walking across the rooftop whistling to himself as he went. He sang one of the songs of old by an old band called AC/DC his parents used to listen to in secret. Alex smiled and breathed in the fresh night air the Christian empire might not be the best but it certainly cared about the environment. The night was cool and all the stars were out twinkling in the dark abyss above him.

If not its people

Alex reached the edge of the roof and kneeled down looking below him. The priest and priestess that guarded and taught at the gifted children walked below going through the bio scanners and flashing their ID chips at the scanners. The academy was considered a military institute and was given the top notch security from the pope and his military clerics.

Alex pulled out a black square and unfolded it until it was palm sized. He taped a few buttons and the computer warmed up activating and piggybacking on the nearest wi fi network. Alex frowned and typed a few buttons pulling out his fathers old pocket watch and opening it.

Thirty seconds

There was a beep as the computer found the nearest window. It dug into the security protocols disengaging the holo window and turning it off. Security on the front door was impregnable but they relied on the hover bikes to prevent any air attacks after all it would take a trained gymnast to reach any window.

Alex was one of the few who could do it

He took off his long black jacket revealing a leather vest that was loaded with weaponry and black pant. He stretched his hands under the fingerless gloves he was wearing and pushed his long hair back. He took a deep breath and drawled upon his cirque training.

He jumped off of the roof and sailed into the shadows of the gardens. The grass was filled with sensors and if he so much as touched a single blade it would trigger the clerical guard.

But that wasn’t going to happen

Alex began to plummet down and he pulled a rubber ball out of his pocket he threw it down and it exploded out sticky stretches popped out attaching to each wall as the ball formed a square. Alex hit it on his feet and it stretched to accommodate him before pushing him back into the air further than before.

Alex sailed against the wall and he swung on one of the poles. He dipped into the shadows just as the bikes zoomed by completing the circle they traveled around the building. Alex pulled himself up on the pole and looked up. The window was high above him and he still had a ways to go before he reached it. He bounced on the pole and began climbing using the arches decorating the church to easily climb it as he worked he reviewed his mission.

Alex and his resistance were fighting a losing battle for a variety of reasons. People were stupid and loved that the church let them live in paradise for their compliance people didn’t want to wake up and see the truth behind their beloved leaders. Alex was able to convert a few to his cause but they were young and weren’t ready for a true war so Alex needed some one who was.

Like a miracle child

He decided to sneak into the miracle child academy and find kids who weren’t happy being with the church. He would try and convince them to join his cause and convert them training them in their physic powers and using them against the church.

He reached the last handhold and swore realizing he was still a good ten yards away from the window. He sighed and concentrated coiling his muscles and then whipping himself up he waited until he was at the top of his jump. He used his mental powers to propel himself the last few feet and caught the edge of the window by his hands. He pulled himself off and swung himself into the window rolling into the hallway and crouching his revolver pulled out and aimed down the hall.

Making sure the coast was clear Alex slowly lifted himself out and kept his revolver out. He crept down the hall pulling out his computer with his other hand and checking the public records of the map. He sighed in relief when he saw the records database was in the same hall. He reached the door and kicked it open walking in and sweeping his gun around. The room was empty except for a deck with a pull out computer.

Alex sat down at the desk and pulled the computer screen out of his pocket. He put his computer and activated the phone function calling his second in command and expert hacker.

“Alright beautiful do your thing” Alex said leaning back and keeping his eyes on the door

Loren heard a sound outside of her door. She sat up wincing at the same time. She quickly went over to the closet and grabbed a shirt sliding the silk over her skin. The shirt was a deep black that matched exactly with her tight black pants that looked like they were painted onto her body. The only sign that she was one of the Gifted ones was the tattoo at the base of her neck which was currently hidden by her long black hair.

Loren opened her room door seeing no one. She listened carefully and took a step back as though to close her door. Suddenly a figure darted out and she grabbed the arm, spun it, and slammed them against the wall. She stopped recognizing it was one of the younger chosen ones. She released him. He immediately turned around and stared at her.

"You're fast." He peered up into Loren's face. He waved his hand in front of her face and she slapped it aside. He gave another pained sound and pouted. "I thought you were blind."

Loren sighed. "I am blind. See!" She held her hair out of her face and stared at him. Her eyes were gray.

"But you saw me. How?"

Loren smiled and grabbed him throwing him out of her room. She heard him beg a few more times for her to tell him how she could see him while being physically blind. Once the door was close she winced in pain and went back to her bed slowly pulling off the shirt. She closed her eyes and saw just as well as if they were open.

Alex waited for a few minutes as his second in command hacked into the files. The computer finally gave a beep and the red lettering disappeared replaced by files zooming around the infrastructure. Alex began flicking through them with his fingers trying to find the information he was looking for.

“Come on where do you keep the bad little boys and girls at?” Alex murmured to himself flicking through the restricted files. He finally spotted the bad files and pulled them up looking at the dossiers that were on the screen.

There were fifteen children in the naughty list Alex would have loved to go after them all but he didn’t have a way of getting them all out undetected. “One would have to do for now” he thought to himself flicking through the pictures.

Then his eyes settled on her

She was an angel with a beauty that Alex had never seen before She was captivating. He looked down from her picture and starred at her info memorizing it. She was one of the older students in her final years. She was found among a group of rebels when they took her. Her mother father and sister were being held in a maximum-security prison for leverage in case she ever tried to get to out of line. She was a good person with the kind of loving traits the church tried to stamp out at an early age. She was a nice person and no matter what the church had not been able to stamp it out of her.

She was perfect

Alex got her room number and stepped out of the door.

And right into a cleric

Alex reacted before he did punching the man in the gut and flipping over him. There was a slight hiss as a roll of fiber wire came out of his wrist and he wrapped it around his hands he choked the guard until he fell down to the ground limp. Alex pulled the man into the server room and shut it Alex grabbed his church robes and pulled it over himself pulling the sacred hood up.

Alex walked up to the student’s dorms playing the part of cleric for any one who passed. He finally reached her door and knocked waiting for her to answer and dropping his hood down so he could see her face.

Loren couldn't sleep the pain was too great. Instead she was on her knees with her head slightly bowed. So that if anyone opened her door it would look like she was praying and had been interrupted. Infact, she was looking out over the stars. She wasn't doing anything more than just looking at them and clearing her mind. She wasn't going out of body just looking at the beauty of the world from the prison of her room. She wished she could fly.

There was a knock on her door. Loren sighed. If it was any of the High Priests or Priestess they would have just entered her room. When she was younger they used to enter in the middle of the night and attack her. This was to teach her to sleep lightly and to be ready to attack at a moments notice. A lesson that had taken her a long time to learn. Still, if it was a knock it meant it was either a friend, which there were very very few since she seemed to keep getting into trouble and you didn't want to be known with a troublemaker, or another student.

Loren got up and yanked opened her door. "Look kid I am not-" Loren paused confused. Why was a cleric knocking on her door. They don't knock. They're one of the few who would just open her door and tell her she had been summoned.

She reacted on instinct her fist snapping out at the figure. Even if her mind hadn't caught up her body knew he wasn't what he seemed to be or she was going to get another caning for hitting the messenger of god's will.

Alex smiled seeing her first come at him. He was glad this girl had enough wits and knew he had chosen the perfect student and recruit for his little rebellion. Alex thought about side stepping punch and then smiled to himself deciding to show her just what mental powers could truly do as soon as her fist was close enough to his face he blinked. Alex used his physic powers to gently push her first to the right and away form his face. He used to little pressure that to her it was as if a sudden gust of wind had simply knocked her arm a little of course.

Alex made his move

He reacted with such blinding speed her physic vision momentarily lost track of him. He stepped in front of her and grabbed her outstretched arm. He used her own weight against her whipping her through the air and spinning her. Alex threw her back into her room causing her to fly across the room and land in her bed. Alex shut the door and pulled off his robe as he walked forward casting it off. He was most defiantly not a cleric judging by the weaponry all across his back.

“Stand down miracle child” Alex said raising his hands “ I mean you no harm” he continued his hands raised still

“I have news for you about your parents and sister” alex said softly

Loren blinked shocked. It was like he had moved her hand without moving her hand at all. Was this another of chosen few? She thought she had met them all. She blinked and suddenly he wasn't in front of her anymore. She was pulling back her arm when she felt him touch her and she saw red. NO ONE touched her. She was hauled off her feet, spun, causing her legs to slam into the wall and door frame and thrown back onto her bed with a soft bounce.

Loren groaned at the pain not only from her legs, which was killing her, but from her back which made her bite her lips to quit from screaming out everything else in that instant forgotten. She could already feel a few of the healing wounds opening back up at having been stretched. The pain even blocked out what had to be bruised shins from being slammed into the wall. If she had been thinking she would have used her mind to kill the fucker just for touching her.

Loren heard his words through a haze as she tried to concentrate on breathing and not moving. Being lashed and dealing with the pain was one thing, but being close to having a dull ache and then it roaring back was something she wasn't prepared for. She closed her eyes and bit her lip and then her brain registered what he said. Her family!

"What?!"

Loren sat up and immediately felt blackness at the edge of her vision. She looked at the bed and saw that she had lost even more blood. She was going to pass out if she didn't be careful. "Who are you? How do you know that information? Where are they?" The last question was the most important.

Loren turned towards her window hearing clanging on the cobblestone like someone was running. They must have heard her smash into the wall. She looked at the stranger and back to the window. Should she call out? She stared at him and then closed her window. "You don't have long. The others will be here in a minute. Tell me what you know quickly and then leave. Whatever you want I can't do."
