Jennifer was an 18 year old high school graduate who was planning to go to business school in the fall. She stood 5’4” with a slender figure, perfect measurements for her height with golden blonde hair that got lighter in the sunlight as did her deep blue eyes. She had just graduated and her and her parents Ted and Michelle were spending most of the summer at the cottage in the woods.
They had friends they had met there, different families that had gathered during summer and other holidays. The entire cottage area was well over 1000 acres with very spacious lots so that most people had their own private space. Many of them including Ted and Michelle had golf carts that they drove around with, visiting, or even shopping. The acreage had a large strip mall on it where you could buy just about anything, stores with clothes, foods, handyman tools, and much more.
Jennifer had several girlfriends she had met and the day they had arrived, the three girls got together. They talked well into the night at Jennifer’s cottage, mostly about school and boys and what they were doing in the fall. They were all planning on going to college or business school where they would earn degrees for their future.
During the summer they spent hours either in the pool or sunbathing around it, working on their tans. Their parents along with others spent much time on their boats, houseboats or yachts on the huge man made lake that was on the property. Although none of which was oversized for the lake. In the evenings, there was always something going on and many times there were open barbeques that hardly cost a scent. They generally got together with one particular man, Nate and what ever companion he had at the time. They had been getting together with him for many years and he actually lived near their house, where they got together, played cards, went to dinner, often all through the year. He was one of their closest friends, they had no other family to speak of, so friends were extra important to them.
Ted, Michelle and Jenny had decided to go to the town strip mall for a day of shopping. Since it was in the mountains and extremely curvy roads to get there, they had decided to take the car. Later that evening they were suppose to have a barbeque with their friend and his new companion. Unfortunately, they never made it back to the cottage and gossip had it that they had gotten in an accident with a semi-truck driver who drove over them.
It was several days later a man from the sheriff’s department showed up at their Nate‘s cottage.
“Yes, I’m sorry to give you the news but Ted and Michelle Mills were both killed in the accident. Their daughter Jennifer Mills is in the hospital in critical condition. Through different files and records, we found that you were assigned caretaker to their daughter if anything ever happened to them. Although it will be quite some time before she will be out of the hospital, she suffered a head injury.” The man gave Nate all the details of where the hospital was and what had happened and then he left.
