The Cocks are winning.
It is, of course, no surprise. The score of 117-72 is the result of the talent of the whole team. Except Danny, who just can't block even if his life depends on it. And Steve, whose passes are just wrong. And Mike who can't score if he is more than five feet away from the basket. And let's face it, your son Dick too. The poor boy can barely bounce the ball.
The truth is that the school's team would have never get into the finals without the Captain, Diego Espora. The boy is a wonder, and everyone knows it. The cheerleaders sing his name and dance for him, the crowd of students show banners with his name, and the other moms that are sitting at your side cheer for him instead for their sons.
The athletic young boy (man?) seems both strong and agile. It is his dominant demeanor that keep the team together and his talent alone that guide them to victory. The kid knows it, and enjoys it, smiling to the cheerleaders and the moms, including you. A confident, even cocky smile that any woman, no matter what age, could fall in love with.
And when the game is over, and the Cocks win the Interstate High School Basketball Championship, everyone applause and cheer the Captain's name. The rest of the boys, almost embarassed, come closer to their mothers, no doubt tring to get a word of encouragement or recognition. Sad part is that the women only touch their sons to move them out of their way to greet the latino boy that has become a hero in the school's sport annals.
And then, with the same spirit of wanting to hear that he has done well, Dick comes to you.
