I harbour (UK spelling, in honor of the occasion) no illusions - I risk being the only poster in this thread.
On the world stage, The Open is the ultimate test of golf in its native environment. The courses look like almost none in the US, and are invariably older than anywhere else the pros play. The trophy is "The Claret Jug", the oldest trophy in Golf, and the Open Championship is the oldest of golf's four majors.
The courses require a style of play unique to links golf. Creative shotmaking is at a premium, rather than simple length and accuracy. there are usually several different ways to play any given hole, sometimes radically different.
It's a great tournament.
