Ogg's interesting and insightful article is definitely worth a read and a vote.

And I'm definitely in agreement with him as regards the strange voting patterns during contests and how much of a lottery it all eventually becomes. However as I explained to him during feedback, my motivation for entering contests is usually to force myself to get some writing done within a specific period of time to meet a deadline, or to spark creative thought and come up with something different that meets the theme requirement.

In my particular case, my writing's been put on the backburner due to work and life in general and this contest was the opportunity to get my ass into gear and submit something. I haven't submitted anything to the site since Oct 2006 - I can't believe how quickly time slips by.

Anyway, a good friend of mine asked me what my score page on Lit looked like so I copied, pasted and mailed it to him. I happened to notice it in my sent items this morning and out of interest did a comparison on the numbers as of today.

I mailed it on Saturday 10 May, and my How to Story had gone up on 9 May.

I was actually astonished and VERY pleasantly surprised at the results, because although I've known that contest entries means more exposure for your other work I'd never really examined it in any detail and didn't know to what extent it does make a difference. Having the "before" figures on hand was very interesting.

This is what it revealed:

Every single one of my stories recorded additional views. The lowest being 95 and the highest 2686.

The total of new views on all old stories amounts to 13 283! And there were a total of 34 new votes recorded on 19 of the stories, with 5 of the stories showing higher overall scores.

I've also had some unexpected but positive feedback on older stories and some good feedback on my How to story but, as anticipated, it has been on a rollercoaster of a ride and now seems to have been solidly attacked. :) But it's had 10 288 hits ( today's figure) and add that to the other hits and it's a whopping 23 571 new hits/views in total over the past 17 days.

I think that's great and certainly enough to inspire me to keep writing and maybe... enter another contest or two. :D

I'd be interested to know if other authors have noticed similar trends.

Can't say I have noticed any major change. The only one I noticed was for a Letter, but its score has been steadily plummeting since winning the end of year contest anyway.

My other submissions appear static in vote numbers, I haven't paid attention to the views, so can't comment on that.
