some of these I've never seen but used to fill out the poll.

The Boot Camp - first half....

of Full Metal Jacket is dead on - correct - real - and amazingly so.

I swear it looks like he filmed it right there - 3rd Battalion.

All the hazing, cussing, physical punishment - dead on real. The DI was a real DI Kubrick hired to play the part.

Right up to when Pyle has "somehow" got live ammo - that is nearly impossible - they keep very close count of that shit.

Well, seeings how I can't quite remember most of these movies,(although I've seen half of them,) I HAVE to go with "Full Metal Jacket" because it's the one I've seen most recently, and because Forrest Gump isn't neccassarily a Vietnam movie.

I generally don't watch war movies, particularly Vietnam.

If you're interested in a completely factual account the book Low Level Hell by Hugh Mills Jr details his experiences there in 1969.

I've been trying to read it for the past year, I'll read it all eventually, but it's easier taken in small doses.

Even though

It was mentioned before that the scene were Pyle gets real ammo is far fetch, but I LOVE THAT SCENE!!!!! Just the expression on his face is enough to drive ME mad. CREEPY!!!!!!! Gives me a chill each time I see it.

All of the mentioned movies depict part of what it was like. The one scene that sent me for a loop was the rocket/mortar attack in the movie "For The Boys". One minute a silent peaceful watch, the sounds of people talking, music playing, frogs croaking from the jungle on the otherside of the perimeter wire. The next all hell breaking loose around you; minutes (or an eon) of explosions, screams and weapons fire, then silence.
A friend told me when I got in-country that,"This war is days of boredom punctuated by minutes of utter terror".
I'm with registered "^^" on this one, my dreams. The thing the movies can't relay is the smell's; blood, cordite, the stink of death. And the metallic taste of fear.

The Iron Triangle

Told the war from the perspective of the National Liberation Front.

Pussy is LIFE...

Lavender's pussy? PC'll eat it...PC likes everything!

Hey PC! He likes it!

:p

also, Sparky, I had a friend in the army. They once unknowingly played night war games with live ammo, an officer stopped them right before they assaulted a camp

Anything that can happen will

I have to go with Full Metal Jacket,

but

Easy Rider may have been the second most logical choice.

Think about it.

when I was a teenager, I read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and was thinking, wow this is so much like Apocalypse now....i was such an idiot

bit by bit we learn

Uh-huh

A whole what- platoon, company? Even a squad would have at least one guy that had his head screwed on enough to tell the difference between live rounds and a blanks.

Your friend is BS'ing you my friend.

Plus, when you had blanks, the guys with the auto weapons had those do-hickeys on the muzzle to keep the m-16 a'pumpin. Once got in trouble for turning it white-hot when they told us to discharge all of our blanks. Well I had been in my foxhole, asleep, as usual, and I did not want to get caught with leftover rounds, so I gave them one good-ass blank firefight...

CARVILLE: WILL YOU EVER SHUT UP AJ?

Full Metal Jacket all the way....

My dad introduced me to it. All of us kids, (3 of us) sat down with my dad, and watched it......changed my life forever........petrified the shit outa me!!

i gotta say , i loved full metal jacket . the realism is superb . with that said . i think that one of the most realistic fire fight scenes was in forrest gump . i went and saw that movie with my father and he had a flashback right then and there in the theater . but i didn't vote for forrest gump (one of my favorite all time movies) because there is much more to it than just vietnam . for strictly vietnam you can't beat the tet offensive of full metal jacket . appocolypse now is a wonderful movie in it's own right . but pales in comparrison.
