For me, without a doubt, it's got to be Prince. With song titles like 'Head,' 'Cream,' and 'I Wanna Lick Your Pussy,' Prince's music doesn't just exude sexuality, but also, simply, raw sexual energy.

Beyond that, just about anything Jim Steinman ever wrote -- regardless of who performs it -- puts me in an 'innocent experimentation of sex' mood.

But that's just me.

So what does it for you?

This thread's been up several times. The answers are always very diverse. I'm one of those people who can't listen to anything, although TV doesn't seem to bother me much.

Instrumentals.

Strings, piano, muted brasses...lush and mellow.

Cocktail lounge music...just you and your lady love in a booth in the corner rubbing legs and sippin' martinis. Gonna get it on a little later ... perfect. :D

Just so long as it's not John Tesh . . . *shudder*

If I listen to Prince I am good for nothing. I finally learned not to play his music when I write.. .

I have about 2000 songs on random play right now. This is giving me some funny segue ways. I can tell you right now that it's difficult to write a 17th-century love letter to the sound og "Who Put the bop in the Bop sha Wop Sha Wop" :D

On the other hand, the Doors' "Love Me Two Times" smoothed me right back out again!

Lol. I like to put my playlist on random play sometimes, too. Kind'a weird to jump from Stabbing Westward to Billy Joel to White Zombie to Brian Setzer . . . .

I seem to remember there was one Yanni song I liked . . .

Or maybe that was just a nightmare. ;)

It was a nightmare, dude, trust me.

The guy's music sucks big time.

Actually, smooth jazz works for me too.

Piano, muted trumpet, a little sax (I said SAX), brushes on the drums...

Mellow out, man. :D

Yeah, man . . . like a . . . like a falling leaf on an autumn breeze . . . yeah, man . . . .

;)

I need to have something harder, rawer playing when I write. Jazz makes me want to curl up on the couch and pour a glass of wine. I ain't knocking it, it just doesn't do it for me.

Most music distracts me. It's probably because I'm a musician myself - I can't help but listen.

But I once got a free copy of the soundtrack to "Swordfish" (by house guru Paul Oakenfold). It's all relentless bumping and throbbing - and pretty good for writing sex scenes to.

Mmm, Swordfish . . . Halle Berry's berries . . . yumm . . . ;)

Oh god. I write with anything going on in the background. I like lots fo background noise, especially when I'm alone in the flat. So I'll have the TV on and the radio in the other room playing pop tunes and cheesy dance music from the last 30 years and yes, I can hear both the tv and the radio at the same time. I just tune out whichever is the least interesting and then I write away, usually whilst conducting several IM chats. Because I have a laptop I drag it around with me and write while I'm cooking, waiting for the washing to finish, on the loo... (I'm joking about one of these...see if you can guess which).
I get bored *reeeeally* easily.
Mind you... once or twice I've managed to write stories whilst sitting at a desk in the Uni library and I wrote 2000 words in half an hour - amazing how much you can do when there are no distractions. Only problem was that I was supposed to be doing my dissertation. Ah well.

<Dancing Queen is on atm... time to get back to the dissertation. Sigh. oooh - Natalie Cole 'This Will Be'... reminds me of my fave feel-good film>

I've got such a polyglot array of songs on my iPod it would be hard to explain any of my choices. But Jim Steinman, for sure--I've got most of the Meat Loaf albums/tapes/CDs, and Bad for Good for good, the one he had to bring out when Meat Loaf had something wrong with his voice.

PS- if I put my own music on random on the laptop I get odd combinations like Pachelbel to Van Halen to Dolly Parton to Radiohead to Earl Hines to Frank.

Diverse tastes in everything

I like alot of different music while I'm writing. What kind depends on what I'm writing. If I'm writing for my profession like an SOP or a paper for a scientific journal, anything goes. I can be pretty much on autopilot. Whereas if I'm trying to write fiction I can't have anything that jams too much cuz I end up getting into the music more than the writing. On occations like that I have my old standbys: Mose Allison, Dan Hicks, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Crosby Stills & Nash....

If I start out with 'Rock Me Baby' ~ Otis Redding, everything falls into place. :)

I usually get a playlist going including:

Bad Company
Audioslave
Seether
Shinedown
Hinder
Revis

Because the lead singer's voices make me very very very very happy, LOL.
It doesn't really matter which songs, just as long as they're singin', hehehe. :)

Zero 7 is sexy, but I've never tried to write with them on... Think they may be too laid back for a really steamy sex scene :D

Yeah, I knew that about you . . . ;)

I have a tendency to get distracted and sing if I listen to music. So I normally have the TV on something that I've either seen a million times (Law & Order's a huge one) or I put on a movie with the same purpose. :)
