Scott fumbled on his nightstand for his phone, finding it he rolled over and looked at the screen. He had to squint to protect his eyes from the bright glare, it was earlier than he had anticipated getting up.
He studied the number for a long moment, it wasn't one that he recognized, he decided that it was probably a wrong number and sat it back down. He laid there for a long moment trying to decide if he wanted to go back to sleep, no, he shook his head.
"Damn" he growled as he got out of bed, finding his running shoes he pulled them on. That was one thing that he hadn't been able to drop as a civilian, the need for a good morning run. He stood up and stretched, he had also kept up with his PT, keeping himself in good shape.
He found a dirty shirt on the floor and took that with him as he headed out of the room. He slipped it over his shoulders, feeling the twinge of pain in his left one, that is what got him discharged from the service. He clenched his jaw, not how he had wanted to go out, having to leave his buddies there, and not after that night. He had done his best to save as many as he could.
He shook his head and focused on the run, just his breathing in his ear. It was a good time, and good for him to focus just on that.
When he got home he checked his phone, he noticed that the same number had called him a few times. His curiosity raised he decided to call it back. A voice said "Hello"
"Hello" replied Scott "who is this" he asked.
"Colonel Stevens"
"Ahh" Scott said, now very curious as to why his old superior in the special forces would be calling him. "How can I help you sir" he asked, they had a falling out when he had been discharged. Scott was disappointed that Colonel Stevens hadn't fought harder to keep him.
"Well" came a sheepish sounding voice "I need your help" he said.
"With what" Scott responded wanting to get to the chase.
"Its my niece Ryan, she needs help"
Scott laughed "And how can I help her sir, you know my skill set doesn't include babysitting" he was getting irritated by this call now, what was it that he was really after. "And I think you could find some other hired guns to do personal protection, thats not my thing"
The line was silent for a second "Yeah I know, I uh.. I wouldn't be calling you if I had any other options" he said.
"So what is it you want from me" Scott said pressing the issue.
"Well you have seen what she has become, we have had her in rehab 3 times last year and none of them worked"
Scott nodded, he had seen all of her exploits plastered in the news "So what do you want from me" he said raising his voice.
"I need your skills to help break her of the drugs and alcohol she is on, I need you to get her clean"
Scott thought for a moment "You know what that means, you know what methods I'll use" this sounded like an interesting challenge to him.
"Yes" came a choked up reply "you will have what ever you need"
"Alright" Scott said "And its going to cost you 2 mil" he said floating that out there to see how that would be taken.
"Scott" came a disappointed voice "I don't think we can pull that much together"
"You know what kind of a risk I am taking doing this" Scott said "You have to make it worth my while"
There was a long exhale "Alright, I can get you half now and half when the job is done"
"Alright" Scott said with a smile, this was going to be a nice payday for him, as long as he was able to pull it off. "Where can I send you a list of equipment that I'll need" he said. "And I will need a complete schedule of where she will be for the next week" he said.
"Okay, let me find out and I will get that to you"
"Its nice working again with you Sir" Scott said politely. "I hope this assignment is successful" he said and clicked off the phone.
He looked around at his small apartment and meager belongings, time to pack them up again.
