The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

45 years later I still have my DOS-BATCH manual. Should probably stage a ritual bonfire for it along with a whole bunch of ancient systems docs. Like I'm going to need it, and it's not worth the postage if I put any of it on eBay.
My wife resells stuff on ebay and Facebook Marketplace and she makes good money selling the silliest things. Her biggest profit was a Chewbacca mask that roared like a wookie when you opened your mouth. We snagged them for $15 and sold a stack of them for $60 each. She bought a pair of the old fashioned aluminum ice cube trays (the old kind with the lever) for $1 for the pair and sold them for $12 each.

Like I told my wife, "There's a lot of stupid money out there, go get it." To you that manual is worthless, but someone may need it or want it and is willing to pay. Just make sure that they pay shipping.

My worst time zone problem came up when I was trying to coordinate with a physicist at Schlumberger's R&D facility near Paris. Our work days overlapped by an hour, but only if I went in early.

I think my worst was working with the Military Affiliates Radio System (MARS) patching free morale calls home from Asia. It was 10 PM in Korea and 4 AM in Chicago and that was the only time the radio bands were open at both ends.

Morning all. Twice in one week. Everyone mark your calendars. Yesterday morning, I was in pain. HM flushed my kidney drain and shortly after that my pain disappeared and I slept for six hour. Glory be. Blood sugar was low this morning so I was chugging cranberry juice for the sugar. I'm fine now but I need to get dressed shortly so we can head out for the VA.

Wish me luck. It's a 90 mile round trip.

Thanks for all the likes.

All the best. The coffee will be waiting when you return

I've been reading some old horror stories, trying to find inspiration to write a new horror story. Dracula's Guest, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Turn of the Screw, to name a few. Outside of paid work, I'm in a bit of a slump. Of course, my folks having issues isn't helping. I'm there as much as here this week. It's spring break, and it should have been a joy to be with Donnie so much; I really want to write and can't seem to do so. How about a cup of Jamaican Me Crazy?

You got it Millie
If you have a Roku they just added a Universal Monster Channel. All those great old B&W monster films are now available to stream. That should stir the horror gene in you.

One of my favorite blends. Angelinos in LA Cali has it in the pods. I have it from another source in whole bean form. I'm ready to drink some Irish coffee minus the coffee. Hello, Jameson, my old friend, I've come to drink you again.
Thanks, that made me laugh.

When I was a kid at my folks' house, we had Monsters Channel on Dish. It lasted a few years but had very few selections, and of course, it was preprogrammed. You could record but wasn't a real need, whatever you wanted would be on five or six times a week.

Try being (Central Time Zone) in the USA buying spare parts for a chemical processing plant in Saudi Arabia; not only does one have to deal with the time zone issue but also the work week issue.

Fortunately we had excellent (company managed) business e-mail which is how I did 98% of our 'conversations' and some of via FAX. I think we might have talked on the phone maybe 12 times in the 12 years I worked there.

We used a cisco product called Webex, which was like Zoom on steroids. Once we started working through webex I never had to log into a remote server ever again. I asked the guy on site to log into the server, share his desktop with me, then give me control. I'd work my magic and we all went home before sunrise. No more unique usernames and passwords, no more worrying about network paths between Denver and Bearclaw Valley West Virginia.

Dinner was a fried tilapia fillet, white rice (a product of Texas) and carrots lyonnaise. I'll be cooking for myself for the next few days, so I get to east some things my wife doesn't make.

I've come to the conclusion that these 'government schemes' are a waste of time space & energy. I cannot sseem to get the blokes back to finish my CH boiler. . . .

But I need coffee. Is there any in the pot please?

PS: Good Luck to Tex.

Another morning, another cup of very weak coffee.

I like, or, rather, have grown accustomed to Dunkin' Donuts original blend. As I said a while back, I discovered that I'm basically making tea with it - quite weak. We don't have any Dunkin' stores in our area, but in rare travels two weekends ago I made it a point to visit one in the destination city just to assess how different their version was from how I make it.

Not recognizable. Not at all. Wasn't bad, but too strong and a touch bitter for my taste buds. I'll just keep on making my tea.

I'm here.

TP, I'm planning on pulling an Ogg at the very least.

I have a hospital bed on the way and a dozen pair of compression socks also. My blood pressure was very low yesterday by the time I hit the VA. 85/55. I've now got a brand new blood pressure cup. 125/65 This morning. I'm feeling much better except for the pain in my back that comes and goes.

I left the pharmacy yesterday with a brown bag that I thought contained my pain meds. Nope. The bag contained a nasal spray drug overdose spray but no drugs. WTF!.

Monday morning, someone is getting an ear full.

Wear the socks! I was promised a dozen too, but only got 4. They must like you better.
Get one of these - greatest invention ever for compression sock wearers. I went without one for years and am still kicking myself for not getting it sooner.

Good morning, friends. I hope all is well out there in AH Wonderland! Caramel Ceam, with no cream or sugar. Why is it called Caramel "Cream" in the first place, since it's black coffee with a rich caramel flavor? This black gal would like to know!

Caramel is creamy, I suppose.

At least as much as a Cream Egg, sorry 'creme egg', because there's no actual cream in it. Or hair cream, skin cream...

Your WebEx must have been a better package than mine. Allegedly we could use it for meetings of 1-5 people for free (larger meetings were charged by the minute), but for both free and charged, it didn't fucking work.

It just about coped with 1:1 video calls, but really not well. So we used it for language lessons - someone could dial in and a laptop passed round the class - but otherwise it just wasn't reliable enough to trust for any outside clients. It tended to crash at least twice in a 45-min lesson, and that was after taking up to 10 minutes to connect.

Luckily we got Teams in Feb 2020...

Just had to deal with Occ Health for work. They claimed they couldn't show me my report before sending to management. At least, the doc wasn't allowed to send it. Calling me and sharing their screen so I could read it wasn't banned, so they did that. So for once it's actually accurate. And says what I want it to.

I'm about 5 years behind on spring cleaning. I did manage to get about 100 books and magazines to get rid of, dust the shelves, put the books in plastic bags to take to the chazza, bags promptly fell apart, so got the lot into a durable shopping bag (an elephant bag from Sainsbury's, for those who know what that looks like). So I'll drop them on BHF soon, but take the bag home. Shopping bags are like gold now they charge for them! Bag is in the hall until the car is just outside, I'm resting until I can cook dinner.

You understand now why the spring cleaning isn't happening. May have to pay someone to help with all the carrying down stairs and to the car and that.
