The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

They're no meaner than chickens, they're just bigger so they pack a bigger punch.
They are absolutely meaner than chickens. The chickens would run up to me for pets and food sometimes, but the damn turkey would chase. And despite their size, they *can* fly and will go after your head even if you're taller than them.

He also blew up more than one tire pecking at it. The chickens never did that.

I was debating about starting a thread on this but decided it's probably more just a casual observation thing.

But does anyone else often wonder what story exactly made a new follower follow them?

Sometimes it's obvious, you'll see a notification that they added a story to Favorites then another saying they Followed you.

But I often get random Follows with no hint as to why; no Favorites, no Comments, on any of my stories, old or new.

Part of me wants to reach out them them in email or something and ask, but I never do.
Reach out and ask. I have. Sometimes I get no response, other times they love to give me detailed information on why.

Asking just creates an opening for them to respond, not a demand that they do. Reader research isn't a bad thing.

Interact with them! I have a growing collection of readers that I converse with weekly. I put out a 4 or 5 paragraph email on Sunday evening describing my progress and future plans. Anyone who sends a DM with a return email address gets added to the mailing list. I ask them for input on upcoming ideas and I ended up getting a beta reader who became a damn fine editor.

Some will tell me why they're following and it's rarely for any particular story. Because my stories run in chapters they say it's the characters that they followed for, but the plots that really hooked them. I love getting those comments from readers who started reading new stories, then, while waiting for the next chapter, they go back into my earlier work and a whole new world opens for them. I get the same thing with my books.

I also sometime go look at stories or other authors they have favorited. I had a period of time when I sent a couple of new followers a welcome note (and got one response) but I didn't keep up with that.

I haven't had the heart to tell any of the people who followed me because of my one incest story that it's a one off. I figure they will eventually figure it out.

Turkey day has arrived. Parental Units are busy, Dad about to head to work, Mum pretending to be doing the cooking, while I do the actual task, Jo and Donnie exploring the Cat in the Hat for a minute or two, then moving on to something else. The TV isn't on, Mum and I are discussing writing, and Pops has asked if I want to work at the theater later today. "Yes, Daddy, yes, I will." The turkey is in the smoker out back, and will be ready around 7:00, I reckon. Mum will add a few chips now and again, while I'm with pops. All deserts and fixings will be prepared in an hour or so, and need to be reheated for supper.

A typical Dynamite Holiday.

I was kinda mystified when I got my first follower, before my first story posted. Then I saw that the account follows almost 20K people. 🤷‍♂️

Looking at my author activity, ALL of the people who favorited me havent commented or favorited a story. Not sure what to make of that, if theres anything to make of it.
Other than all of my stories featuring queer men, there's not a lot of common ground - the stories run the gamut from non/dub-con to enthusiastically consensual romance to non-sexual stories. So I really don't know what theyre after!
I'm just going to keep writing what I like and let the audience figure it out, I guess.

C just had me look for the National Dog Show on the telly. I warned her that it was an NBC Sports show, and that the NBC over-the-air signal here is poor, and barely watchable. At the moment it isn't breaking up too badly. She did just comment that our dog isn't interested. Yeah, Sky knows that Dalmatians are out of favor these days and won't make it past the non-working group, so "I'll just nap instead." Suit yourself, puppy.

Looked for it streaming, and yeah, it's there... subscription only. Subscribe for a two-hour show? They can stick it where the sun don't shine.

That's a very dark place!

There are 1,440 minutes in each day. OK, maybe only 720 since each one occurs twice each day on a 12 hour clock. WHY do I look at the clock during that ONE minute that occurs twice each day, almost every day?

And if I don't see it on one of my clocks, it all too often appears as a time stamp like on a post here.

Given that and even the possibly of elapsed time in a count down timer, there are days where I see it four or five times.

People have different ways they like to interact. Some comment. Some don't. Some vote (you won't know if they voted on a story). Some don't Some favorite stories very broadly (like 1000's of them). Others think favorite means their favorite few.

Be grateful that you are doing something that some people thought was notable to them.

Yeah, I'm always curious, but I'm too shy to try and reach out.

😲 My grandpa must've raised his turkey's differently then. The chickens were standoffish little bastards while the turkey's just pretended you weren't there until they couldn't then they'd beg for food.

Of course, that might've had something to do with the one time the geese chased us... We were eating goose for a month or two there, and grandpa didn't bother getting more geese after that.

My grandfather was an avid turkey hunter, but in the 1930s and 40s the wild turkey was almost extinct in Western New York, so he bought a hog farm that went under in the depression and planted the cropland with saplings he got from the state department of forestry. The forest he made is FILLED with wild turkeys now. If you go camping there they'll trash your cooler if you don't have it locked down tight. But come hunting season they're as rare as hen's teeth.

Wild turkeys are smart.

Our Thanksgiving dinner is near evening, and at our oldest daughter's in-laws. We've done Thanksgiving and Easter there for years. Those used to be big, extended family affairs with about thirty people from four generations. They loved hosting those big parties, but time and age knocked the crowd down to maybe ten.

My wife, along with our son, is at my BIL for his annual big Thanksgiving gathering. He used to get mid-twenties most years. I guess it's down to mid-teens this year. I can't handle the big parties like that. I volunteered to stay home and give the diabetic cat her insulin twice a day while they're gone.

My gathering just hit 8 with everyone here and it is TOO MANY.

I'd love to know how and why readers do a lot of things. Like just now. A reader favorited my first story nine times. Why? I looked at his page, and he doesn't have a lot of public lists, and the story shows up on his favorites just once.
