The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I guess I'm seeing things since I never really checked. There's certainly no incentive, or, rather, there is disincentive for the site to publish these sort of statistics on an ongoing basis. Would still love to see a graph, tho'! Even just total submissions over time, from which contribution traffic by [some period] could be interpolated.

Probably just a little surprised that my story listings seem to get lost in the crowd, with the "new" meaningless in less than a day. 🤷‍♂️

Posts per day is really easy to check. Just keep in mind that the New List contains 75 stories/page, and that the stories from the eighth day at the end of the list aren't purged until later in the day.

It's always been said that most of the views your story will ever get come on the first day. That's not always true for my stories, but it does capture the major effect. In my traffic models, half of the views I get from the new list or category hub come within about 16 hours after the story's published. The rest from any source come in at a lower rate that declines over time. The first-day votes may be relatively insignificant after a few years.

The pattern might be a little different in categories where new stories don't get kicked off the hub right away. Group Sex isn't one of the real busy hubs. You might get significant reads from the hub on day 2, or maybe even later.

For me, generally no. Haven't delved into the pattern yet, but I suspect it's a combination of follower traffic for folks who don't log in every day, and that nearly everything I write these days is in a series.

Now what I have noticed is the rate of increase in the number of views nosedives if the score is <4.01. In low-voting categories, the score vandals cause serious damage, and it grates me that the-powers-that-be let this continue. It further biases the overall site toward popular categories.

In my experience, the categories where story stays up longer also have lower readership so it still amounts to very little. In the extreme end is the chain stories, where we had that chain just now and my chapter was on category new list for four months and still has something like 1400 views 😄 (it’s still on the new list but now it’s not in the top few ones that is immediately visible on category hub on my phone).

That makes sense. Before today, First Time was the lowest-traffic category I'd published in, and that case isn't as extreme as Chain Stories. I had to invent a new model to match the traffic pattern for Hurricane Twyla (in First Time). It said the story got less that 1600 votes total from the New List with half of those coming in the first 16 hours. The story was up on the hub for a while, and it appeared to produce almost 3500 views, with half coming in a little under 5 days.

Votes accumulated over the long term are much greater than votes from the New List or the Hub combined. The story has about 14000 views, and only about 5100 came while they story was on the New List and the Hub.

I think the pattern that @MrPixel described means that he got very few views from the New List, which doesn't surprise me for late chapters.

Actually it's all over the place, and score vs. reads seems to be the predominant association. Statistically insignificant in the grand scheme, but enough to garner my attention.

Another day, another pop-up shower just missed us. Most of town seems to be having a fairly normal summer, but we haven't had measurable rain at my house since early in July. The showers keep scraping by or dying before they get here.

Projections are for another hot day tomorrow, then a cooling trend with an increased chance of shower. The cooler weather and the chance of showers are all far enough in the future that the weather service is likely to change their mind before it gets here.

Mmmm. That sounds different, but good. Speaking of sweet and spicy, our favorite lunch place just added esquites to their menu. They're serving it as an appetizer with chips, but I'm treating it as a side dish to go along with a grilled chicken taco as a light lunch. It's really good. C gives me grief as I have a rep for not liking corn. She'll get over it.

It's another cloudy morning, and while we didn't get any rain, per se, yesterday, it misted a few times. The temperatures are going to be below normal for this time of year for a few days and is welcomed.

There's a fresh pot of coffee on the burner and the teapot is hot. Along with the remaining green chile-cheddar cheese apple pie, there are donuts and danish on the counter. Enjoy!

I'll be over in the corner working on my story, hoping my iced tea can keep me from going up in flames as I write the hot sex scene for my story. Just ignore the sounds of arousal if you can ...

I thought Chain Stories had low readership (3.5k views after 3 weeks, for the last chapter of Matchmaking for the Shy), but after five days my rant about sex toys in Reviews and Essays has 500 views. On the other hand, a much larger proportion seems to have actually read it, with 14 votes and five comments.

I have other stories with ten thousand views and fewer votes, let alone comments (glares at EC and GM readers).

Only one other submission has been published in R&E in the last month.

Doctor Awesome: I suggest you meet your friend and order a pizza.

I want your doctor. Mine would rail at the suggestion of a pizza for mood enhancement, "We discussed carbs reduction. Pizza isn't exactly on our new plan." ...sigh...

Of course, Dr Awkward would just tell you to drink.

Okay. Margarita with lunch. That's the ticket.

Not much to post about this morning. Finally laid some retirement account nonsense to rest last night (two months' worth of wrangling). Her brokerage was a nightmare to deal with, so the ducks finally aligned to move everything to our joint brokerage. What a relief. Whatever it takes to make it last.

Temporary fence between our backyard and the next door poodle-something's yard went up yesterday afternoon. I'm sure that Sky's wannabe girlfriend can crawl under it, but at least the (friendly) neighbor ought to have the impression now that she can't let the dog run loose to mark in our yard. Tonight we figure to put up the temp fence on the other side to discourage the deer from browsing. Permanent fence is still awaiting parts.

Writing is fits and starts. I have a "next installment" WIP that needs a skosh more development. Have to be in the right frame of mind lest it sound forced. As usual, it's a fun romp, just have to close out the party with everybody's "happy endings." The 13-chapter "dump" started last week has just two left in the queue for the "new" list, and the crossover story is standing by to upload. Crossover is longer than I usu [Crap. Keyboard just died. Okay, we're back.] usually publish in a single drop at 17K words. We'll see how that goes.

Putzing around with a story I had written a few lines of almost a year ago. It could be read as a stand-alone stroker or a follow-up piece to a previous story.

I'm stuck on formatting while having barely written much. A character will be sending voice messages to someone--do I write it as if it's normal speech in paragraphs? Do I single it out as its own lines for impact? Italics or not?

You can spend a lot of time worrying about the format then not gain much with it.

I just format such things as normal dialog and make it clear in the text that it's a voice message, or a text, or whatever. Large parts of my most recent story are text messages, but it's formatted as dialog.
