Flay rod, Fly rod, is there really a difference. Since i fly fish a lot of docks and brush lines, I roll cast most of the time. Otherwise I would be a flay fisherman. :D

I've forgotten how to do it; that said, I was never very competent even then.

I just watch the fishermen (and fisherwomen) on the beach, in small boats and today three were fishing from kayaks.

I rarely see anyone catch a fish of any size. They are there. They're just elusive.

A recent beach-fishing contest was won by the only person to catch a single fish. That fish was so small that it had to returned to the sea immediately after weighing. Seven ounces was enough to win.

Thirty people had spent several hours to catch one small fish.

They drank a lot of coffee in those hours. One wife arrived with paper wrapped Fish and Chips and was accused of helping her husband to cheat.

The barber had a crowd this morning. He usually does. The very chatty man next to me turned out to be the production manager for one of the shoots that's been in my way for the last few weeks. They were filming the pilot for a new TV series, and they're done now.

He said his typical work day was seventeen hours. They would shoot for fourteen hours and he was on his feet most of that time. The remaining three hours he'd be writing checks, making arrangements for the next day, and other miscellany.

I guess it's good that they usually only work a few weeks at a time, because those days would be killers.

Apparently fishing with high explosives is effective. So I've been told. Like duck shooting with grenade launchers. There's less challenge of course but you will get the fish if they're there.

Fly Rod, Flay Rod...

  • Fay Rod: Tinker Bell original
  • Fee Rod: Rental implement
  • Fey Rod: Rod whose user has hooked grizzly on back-cast
  • Fie Rod: Rod just used to make fifth cast into nearby thorn bushes
  • Flea Rod: Very small, used with dog-fur lure
  • Flee Rod: Used when game warden sighted
  • Fray Rod: For use in brawls over riparian rights

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Dynamite is too noisy. It broadcasts where the good fishing spots were.

Black walnut husks and old crank telephones are better. Although using a crank phone in an aluminum boat can have it's dangers. Also if your boat leaks it can be shocking.

Fresh coffee is available for the late afternoon and evening crew.

I remember one group of fishermen off Gibraltar in the early 1950s.

They had found a crate of WW2 hand grenades. They decided to use them to go fishing.

They pulled the pin on one and immediately dropped it into the water. By they time it exploded it was on the bottom in mud. They were less than impressed. No fish were killed. The result had been a large cloud of muddy water.

They pulled the pin and dropped the next grenade after a very short delay.

Their canvas covered canoes were holed by shrapnel, sinking, and all four of them sustained minor injuries. They were too busy dealing with their wounds to see whether any fish had been killed.

They were also too busy to notice the Police boat pulling alongside.

That puts the untrained user in Darwin Award territory and a good Instructor is essential.
The problem is that the technique is a bit 'drastic'.
Effective, though.

Time for coffee [at +14C in sunshine]

I have programmed Intel 4004, 8008, and 8080 chips.
I have been humbled by hardware dumber than a gnat.
I have no fucking desire to attempt to outsmart a fish.

Cans of fish chowder are cheap at the store in town.

The nice thing about fishing is that it was a thoroughly relaxing endeavour - if you so choose.
:)
The evening sun is shining. I feel a coffee is needed.

Evening all, it has been a relaxing day after last nights storms. The sun came out around midday. HM, HG, and I have lazied away the day. Kind of a celebration of HM's full retirement. Her last store is sold and all the legal work is finished.

I'm not sure how long their full retirement will last though. They are already checking out what is going on around this little town. The local lingerie shop closed a while back. The lady that ran it for a hundred years got sick and her daughter wasn't the best at handling people so...

Add in a day spa and hair styling and they might have something. Or so they think. I do also but what do i know. Time will tell.

Fresh coffee for the evening crew. A nice hot kettle to boot.

I'll take you up on that hot kettle. :rose:

I've realized I want to record an audio version of the poetry book I'm working on putting together. I just read the technical requirements and it's a bit intimidating but I think I can do it. I don't know if anyone will buy it but I'm going to do it.

It's been a very quiet forum today. Maybe people are busy writing, or doing springy things. Personally, I did some springy things, wrote a couple paragraphs and deleted more than I wrote.

Oh, and a couple of the gladiolas I planted last weekend are already poking up above the soil. I expected some would appear right away and some could talk a month.

 I'm not sure whether to be scared or delightfully amazed at the idea of talking gladiolas, but I think I'll steal it for a writing prompt. Thanks!

I'm suddenly picturing Little Shop of Horrors, but I hope that's not what you have in mind. My glads are small and colorful and would never eat a person. Honest. They told me. :)

:D Just what I was thinking - small, colorful, honest, helpful flowers. Of course, I can't promise what anyone else in the writer's group will do with the prompt.

Oy vey. Up at 4 am with a coughing munchkin, four days running. I'd forgotten how tiring this gets. I'm giving her allergy meds as well as cold meds to cover all our bases, but this is always how her colds go.

4am is no sane time to be up for anything, save, perhaps, night-shift operators and the Emergency services.
Sympathy, Mags. :rose:

Is anyone short of a cloud or two ? I got a whole bloody sky-full here.
Just bring your own bags and take a few away.

Hot coffee is going down well.

Thanks, HP. As for the clouds, we have plenty ourselves.

Tried a paleo waffle mix. Pretty good, nice and crispy. Coffee time.

Good morning,

It's well after 4AM and a lovely looking day. Windy and cool but lovely in any case.

I haven't decided on Breakfast yet but the coffee is ready.

Sorry to hear about the Munchkin, MP. Hopefully she will outgrow the allergies. Colds are their own problem.

Today will probably be another lazy day. I have that feeling as both HM and HG are still asleep.

Ah - the coffee.
Just the job, for it is now raining, something that I'm sure is desirable at Some time; just not quite so welcome at present.
So if anyone fancies some water, bring your own buckets. . . .

We're supposed to have a beautiful day today. That's good because I feel like I have a lot to get done, and some of that is outside.

I'm a bit p1$$ed off with the current weather. Spring is developing colourfully about me and I've either a problem with light of it's raining.
It's late.
Tea, I think, is the answer.

It was a lovely afternoon. We had supper on the screen porch. The wind had died down so it wasn't bad at all.

Coffee and kettle for the evening crowd.
