Ben had been glum on the way home; the sunshine of the day didn't help. What rotten luck, to run into Adam Garrison at the pier. He'd been with a woman who was facing away, so Ben didn't know who it was, and couldn't stick around to find out.
A sudden thought struck Ben: Could she be someone from the firm? It was unlikely, but still... He tried to work out in his head whether that would make his trysting with Cassie easier or more complicated...
When he'd pulled into the driveway Gloria's car was still gone, so he'd pulled out his phone and dialed. When Cassie picked up, he started right in. "I'm sorry, Sweetness; I saw Adam Garrison at the pier. I had to walk away, and pretend we weren't together there; it was too risky." He hated this, that they had to keep their connection hidden. But his, and her, job depended on it.
