My early retirement story:
Retired from the corporate world at 54. The plan was to get in the best shape of my life. Three hours a day at the gym.

Day 1 was a success. 3 hr workout, home for lunch, then walked my 17 year old dog to the neighborhood park to sit under a shade tree.

Day 2, same routine except the workout was cut the two and a half hours. Nice afternoon with my dog under the shade tree.

Day 3. Same routine except the workout was cut to two hours. And when my dog and I got to the park, a homeless lady was in our spot under the shade tree.

Day 4. Got home from the gym even earlier. Needed to make sure the homeless lady hadn’t beaten us to our spot.

Day 5. The homeless lady beat us to our spot.

That was when I realized what my entire life in retirement had boiled down to. Racing against a homeless lady for a spot in the shade. I decided to go back to work part time as a consultant. A few years later I figured out how to live a meaningful life in full retirement. The key is to take pride in goofing off!
Indeed it is! I think I'm really good at that particular skill. 😅 😅

It takes work to develop those skills, right? People who spend their days in Zoom meetings, reacting to emails, and keeping up with Slack channels don’t appreciate how much effort goes into mastering the art of goofing off. Yesterday I worked on my Costco shopping skills and an afternoon bicycle ride. Today I’ll practice my in person voting skills and hiking skills.
I too shall vote. I find that having my identity verified is fulfilling. Also, confirming my continued pre-zombie, near life like existence is reassuring.

Way to go! I'm a master (mistress?) Costco shopper!

You rock that vote! Then reward yourself with a nice hike.

It's cold here, been snowing tonight, and the rooftops are covered with frost. There's so much fog on the lake I can't see across it.

My shoulder feels better i did a really good stretch this am and it seemed to release something.... yesterday it hurt so bad all the way up my neck to behind my ear and in to my back. Now just a little achy but lots better.... yeah for stretching!!
Glad it feels better my dear. Well done for stretching it out! some Ibuprophen will help the rest of it to calm down!

All this talk about retirement, I’ve had to change careers so many times that at 61, I’m just working for the rest of my life unless I win the lottery, lol!

I had a dream about it..... it was great.. first hire would be security. Then I would hire an account a lawyer and the pr person to keep crazies away from me. I would set up trusts for my nephews, give some gifts to people that have helped me, and a couple charities would get some money. And then I would buy a Big Field or an island and build a house right in the center and living it with my butler and my gardener. Oh and I would quit my job, as very soon as the money was in the bank, it would be epic and glorious and it would be a performance

That’s a nice dream!

I know I would first pay all our outstanding debts - house, my van, credit cards, student loans… set up money for my kids to go to college… and then? Honestly sometimes I think I’d take what was left and split it with my wife and get a divorce, let her keep the house and I’ll buy my own place. Then maybe she can find someone to meet her expectations that I fail at and I can just live my life, taking the kids like every other weekend or whatever is agreed to.
