The 300

The beginning, wow; the middle, wow; the ending, wow. In that short story were so many images in my mind - of a hot, fierce battle - the last spurt of passion before death - then the death itself. Just wow, Paolo Labico. I hope they really did all die that way, hundreds of years ago. *shiver*

I'm actually listening to a book on tape called "Gates of Fire" which is about the battle of Thermopylae. I'm only about 1/8 of the way thru it, but it's very interesting. And frightening, how those people lived back then, when year to year your city could be overrun and your family killed and your farm burned, etc etc. Horrible.

It's difficult to imagine the situation the Spartans found themselves in. "OK, there are 2 million Persians. There are 300 of us. We need to hold them for a few days." And no Spartan raised his hand to say, "Uh, that's fucking insane."

The insane thing is that the Spartans held for a WEEK! Outnumbered 300 to 2 million and they held for SEVEN DAYS. And the Persians weren't slobs, either, they were hardened troops. One of the great events of human history.

Glad you all Like it.

You never told me you liked this story Muff. Its been there for a year and I've never gotten feedback on it. So thanks for the publicity!

Christo, I wrote this particular story because I am a Spartan, its where my family is from in Greece. (Don't get confused I'm also Italian) The battle of thermopylae was one of the true defining moments in history. If Greece had been conquored by the Persians just a generation before what we think of as the golden age of Athens, Sophocles and Euripides would have been writing Hymns to Zoroaster!

Anyone with questions about the story...or the battle, feel free to ask.

Paul
