Even those who aren’t fans of President Donald Trump sometimes give him credit for the strength of the American economy. I’ve argued before that this is largely misguided because presidents’ impacts on the economy are hard to evaluate and are typically exaggerated.

But new data released Friday further undermined the claims of Trump’s economic prowess, deflating the myths around his administration’s supposedly growth-inducing tax cuts and deregulation.

Trump will keep selling himself as an economic wizard, of course, no matter what the numbers say. But anyone paying attention should be able to see through this self-puffery.

Rust Belt voters could be bailing on Trump — here’s the surprising reason why

The conventional wisdom holds that whatever the reason white, lower-educated parts of the Midwest swung to President Donald Trump — be it economic frustration or racial grievances — it will be the fate of the economy that makes or breaks Trump’s re-election bid in 2020. If the economy continues on its upward trajectory, the thinking goes, Trump will pull off a win, and that if it crashes, which some people are worried is in the cards, the blue-collar areas that rolled the dice on him will throw him out.

But this isn’t necessarily the case. In fact, according to Michigan economist John Austin, it might actually be the other way around.

“Contrary to the perception that a rebounding economy will work to the president’s benefit, there is growing evidence in Michigan and throughout the Rust Belt that metro areas that are bouncing back — and there are a bunch — are turning blue again,” wrote Austin in Politico. “Indeed, communities that continue to flounder — and unfortunately there are still many of those, too —are likely to double down on Trumpism.

President Trump has blamed predecessor Barack Obama for a litany of issues, from the Iran nuclear deal to the crisis at the border, and on Friday he added the alleged poor state of air conditioning in the White House to that list.

Trump made the remarks to reporters in the Oval Office, when discussing how he was going to his residence in Bedminster, N.J. in August. He said that such trips aren’t a vacation and that presidential away days are often used for maintenance on the White House.

“I'd rather be right here,” he said, before adding that “a lot of times you go and they do a lot of work in the White House.”

“For instance, the Obama administration worked out a brand new air conditioning system for the West Wing and it was so good before they did the system,” he said.

“Now that they did this system it's freezing or hot in here,” he complained

Sounds like Trump is having hot flashes.

According to a report from Politico, GOP operatives are looking at a new wave of loses in the 2020 general election that could mirror the 2018 “Blue wave” bloodbath that led them to lose control of the House in 2018.

With Republican Reps. Paul Mitchell (MI), Pete Olson (TX) and Alabama’s Martha Roby all announcing they will not run again and are stepping aside, officials are looking at the electoral map and seeing possible losses with incumbents suddenly out of the picture in a high turn-out election.

We shall see how many voters turn out to change the state of the swamp.

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee filed an Application with the US District Court for DC to gain access to the underlying Mueller grand jury information, known to the law dorks as 6(e) material. That's because Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6(e) has long been interpreted to allow for the release of grand jury info incident to a judicial proceeding, such as, just for instance, say, an impeachment inquiry.

In 1974, the DC District Court forced the release of the grand jury's report on Richard Nixon to the Judiciary Committee, and just last September the same court reaffirmed that stance in a related case. So if we want it, we're going to have to use the magic "I" word.

The summer of 2019, President Donald Trump spent so much time sending racist tweets; it is coming close to rivaling his time on the golf course.

According to New York Intelligencer columnist Jonathan Chait Sunday’s attacks on Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and the city of Baltimore are just the latest in a long series of racist Twitter battles the president has started.

No! it's because:

“The best explanations for Trump’s actions are often the stupidest ones,” Chait wrote. “Trump has decided the answer to “how I spent my summer vacation” will be sending racist tweets, primarily because that was the thing that he felt like doing at those moments, contradicting the pleas of most of his fellow Republicans.”

“One of the many oddities of his term in office is that he never observed the traditional break between campaigning and governing, and as a result never adopted even the pose of representing the entire country,” Chait explained.

The result has been a non-stop war against his political enemies in an endless campaign cycle. It puts Trump in the position of trashing parts of the country and groups of people he was elected to represent.

American presidents simply do not call American cities filthy and dangerous,” Chait closed. “George W. Bush may not have enjoyed much support in places like Baltimore, but he wouldn’t go around calling Democratic neighborhoods disgusting hellholes. It does not occur to Trump that the patriotic requirements of his office require representing the whole of it.”

President Donald Trump on Monday got called out for making a “delusional” statement to a group of first responders during a signing ceremony to commemorate legislation that will permanently authorize the September 11th victim compensation fund.

During the ceremony, Trump claimed that he was at the site of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks nearly 18 years ago assisting the police and fire fighters who were helping to rescue people.

“Many of those affected were fire fighters, police officers, and other first responders,” the president said. “And I was down there also, but I’m not considering myself a first responder, but I was down there, I spent a lot of time down there with you.”

Donald Trump Gets Mighty Touchy When A Black Man Threatens To Sue Ivanka, Huh?

Why did Donald Trump wake up Saturday morning and decide to launch a racist attack against Congressman Elijah Cummings? Why the hell does Donald Trump do anything -- it's Fox News, of course. Anyone who tells you the president is executing some kind of master strategy in a high-stakes game of eleven-dimensional chess is delusional. He's just a demented rat running on Rupert Murdoch's wheel.

But let's pull back and ask a slightly different question: Why is FOX going after Cummings now? And why is Donald Trump so delighted to go along with the attack? Aside from the obvious fact that Cummings is a black Democrat from a state that hasn't voted for a Republican president in 30 years, of course. Well it might have something to do with a Resolution passed on Friday by the House Oversight Committee empowering its chair, one Elijah Cummings, to subpoena the personal communications of "non-career" White House employees to determine if there were violations of the Presidential Records Act.

Spoiler Alert: That means Jared and Ivanka.

if we might translate that Resolution into civilian English, it says:

1. We know Jared and Ivanka have been using BUTTERY MALES to communicate off the books. Hand 'em over!

2. We know you guys freaked out when you discovered this massive fuckup, so give us all your "Holy shit Jarvanka just screwed the pooch" emails, too.

3. We know you guys did an internal report on this, so add it to the pile.

In the interest of big-picturing the past week or so, we learned from the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee that Russian hackers successfully infiltrated election systems in all 50 states during the 2016 election cycle. We also learned that the accused felon who was installed as commander in chief as a likely consequence of that cyber-attack spent all weekend blurting racist gibberish on Twitter while cable-news talking heads wonder how it will play among the Midwestern diner crowd. Meanwhile, the Republican Senate majority leader refuses to pass any legislation safeguarding future elections.

No alternatives have been introduced by the Senate Republicans. Meanwhile, McConnell successfully lifted sanctions against Rusal, a company linked to Russian oligarch and Paul Manafort associate Oleg Deripaska. Shortly after the sanctions were lifted, we learned that Deripaska is investing $200 million in Kentucky, McConnell’s home state (where he faces a potentially difficult re-election battle next year). Coincidence? Not a chance in hell.

Do we really want the Russians, North Koreans or China directing our elections?

A group of over 20 Republican senators on Monday urged President Donald Trump’s Treasury Department to bypass Congress to unilaterally hand the wealthiest Americans another massive tax cut.

In a letter (pdf) led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the GOP senators called on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to index capital gains to inflation, a move that would primarily reward rich investors.

The GOP push for more tax cuts for the rich comes as the Trump administration is working to take food stamps from three million low-income Americans, Seth Hanlon, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, noted on Twitter.

Trump grows furious when reporter points out his dismal approval numbers from black Americans

President Donald Trump on Tuesday grew visibly angry after a reporter informed him that a recent poll showed that the vast majority of black Americans believe he is a racist.

While talking with reporters on the White House lawn, one reporter asked the president why 80 percent of black voters in a Quinnipiac poll said that he was racist. The same poll also showed that 89 percent of black voters said they would “definitely” not vote for Trump in 2020.

Trump shafted family farmers to give trade war bailouts to huge corporate farms instead

President Donald Trump has tried to paper over the disaster his trade war has been causing for American farmers by issuing a $16 billion bailout, paying farmers for the work they lost due to the tariffs — meaning that he is effectively borrowing money from China to pay farmers not to sell their goods to China.

But Trump’s policy is even more disastrous than it looks on paper, according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group.

Of the $16 billion in “Market Facilitation Payments” Trump’s Department of Agriculture appropriated, the group found, 54 percent of it went to just the top one-tenth of farms, with 82 farmers receiving at least $500,000 and many of the recipients actually living in large cities. Smaller family farms, meanwhile, have received very little, with the bottom 80 percent of farmers getting less than $5,000 each — and farmers of color have received almost nothing.
