The “Pit” of the Trade Towers, remains….why?

Credit where credit is due; Glenn Beck today literally screamed the question I had felt but never expressed in public.

“The Empire State Building was completed in 400 days; it has been over 2000 days since the Towers fell!”

My thought has always been, ‘rebuild the Towers exactly as they were, but taller and stronger’, Beck expressed the same sentiment and I am curious as to how many feel the same?

And yes, I am aware of all of the Political and Economic BS as to why nothing has been built on the site for eight years.

There was an image, along with many others, burned into my memory from that time, one was the upward faced beacons in the night from the site of the destroyed Towers that gave a surreal portrayal as if they still stood.

Strangely enough, my youngest daughter is touring the New York area, her first visit. She asked what sites I might recommend she see, one was the 9/11 site, I wonder what her thoughts may be if she visits.

I would still like to see the New York skyline with the Twin Towers yet again, instead, even the name of the new building, “Freedom Tower” is being changed to, “One World Trade Center”

Fuck your ‘One World’ mentality, we are Americans and proud of it!

It's there because those communists (led by that socialist, facist Barack Obama) won't honor our dead heroes.......
You and me, Mon Ami, we gotta locknload and then hunt them liberals down.......

There was a really good documentary on the quagmire that's been delaying the reconstruction for the better half of a decade. A perfect storm of things going wrong, from property confusion, to regulatory mess, to political turf wars, and just good old inertia on top of it.

Sad to say I can't remember the name and who produced it. I saw it syndicated on Belgian public service TV in a Brussels hotel while hung over.

If I remember the title, I'll let you know.

Oh, and I gotta ask, what did Glenn Beck do, roll out the chalk board and connect it to ACORN? ;)

Anyone who can pre-sell 60% of the commercial space can build anything they want on the land.

I am sure the Port Authority would love to have a revenue producing property, instead of a memorial hole in the ground.

“The Empire State Building was completed in 400 days; it has been over 2000 days since the Towers fell!”

What the fuck has that got to do with anything in the 21st century?

Is he saying we could have built 5 Empire State Buildings? It's all just sound and fury.

The reason nothing has been done is because land owners and builders understand it's a goldmine. Can you imagine how much a wealthy elitist would pay to live in the "New Twin Towers?" How about the contracts to build there? I'm sure they'll be hundreds of extra little problems a builder can tack on. Plumbers, electricians, and other unions are in the mix too.

It's that simple - there is money to be made and the greed of making it is keeping everything at a standstill.

Still, I hope your daughter has a great time in New York. It truly is a one of a kind city with some fascinating sites. The poetry wall at the 9/11 site is beautiful.

No dummy,

It's written in invisible ink on the back of the Declaration of Independance......

At least until the current crisis, I'd imagine office tenants would have been the most likely.

But on the other hand, it's a place with a forever omnious connotation. And the vibe of an office location is important.

I doubt going to work right on the spot of the old twin towes would not pass my Xerox test. The Xerox test is detemined by the answer of the question "Can you see yourself banging a co-worker on top of the Xerox machine in this workplace?". I think ther answer woud be a no, with the explanation that it would still feel kind of weird.

Thank you, Liar, I have seen snippets of why the confusion and lack of progress. I understand the search for human remains was a factor early on and the underground construction of a new, 'bathtub', to keep water from the river out of the foundation.

There was also a program about choosing the architectural firm that would design the site and a program concerning public opinion about what should replace the destroyed buildings.

The actual property involved has a long history and I watched a program that gave the environment preceding construction of the Towers back in the seventies.

I saw, but forget, the percentage of office space that was lost in the Terror attack, but it was substantial and I suspect whatever type of structure constructed it would be filled quickly.

Thanks again...

Thank you, P&P, although your conclusion that, 'greed' (read as a free market), is the cause, I very much doubt that.

It is, I suspect, a political conflict, such as you and I experience here.

To reconstruct the Towers as they were, or even name one, Freedom Tower, is seen as an expression of arrogance and the anti war left will have none of it.

Thank you concerning my daughter, she sends excited emails about Museums and Historical sites in the Nations Capitol. She is taking time off from college and traveling to widen her perspectives and I am very, very proud of her.

Did you ever get the message off the back of the Declaration of Independance! Remember to apply some heat to the wet surface......
What would Ann Rand say about this thread?
I would look her up but sold her books years ago to a gay kid aspiring to the US Senate....Larry Craig?
I think that's his name. I wonder whatever happened to him???

Modern day planning boards are a pain in the ass. I have small two story mixed use jobs on my desk right now that have been in planning board and building department hell for two years. It is disgusting how much they love to delay construction projects these days.

I would be proud too. Hope she enjoys her time off and New York.

Actually, I think Bronzeage summed it up. It's capitalism that's kept the site from being rebuilt. Good old fashioned American opportunism, waiting to see who offers the biggest chomp at the bit.

Eventually, I'm sure some inspiring work of modern art will dominate Ground Zero. But bet your ass there will be a museum attached with an entry fee to view it, and an overpriced gift shop to sell 'authentic' memorabilia to tourists.

You doubt it? Remember what country this is . . . live free, die hard, make a buck. ;)

Geez, Slyc, you goin' round and trying to poke my balloons with ur finger? Try a needle, works better.

It was free market good ole capitalism that enabled the Empire State Building, at that time the tallest building in the world and one I have been to the top of, in just over a year.

It is politics and red tape that has delayed the construction. Hell, Howard Roarck(sp) of Fountainhead, would have had that complex built years ago.

The Ragheads destroyed the Towers because they were symbols of free market America and the prosperity we enjoy.

'ow bout them apples?:)

Let us give credit, where credit is due...the top two tallest buildings in the world were built not by a capatilist nation, but a communist nation. Money, not political structure, dictates grandeur. :)

To get rid of red tape, simply live in a dictatorship. It's how Castro built all his infrastructure much more quickly than the rest of the Caribbean islands.

No, no, no.

No one has come up with a plausible excuse for taxpayers to pay for it and give it to the elites.

All i can say is there is a time for mourning and there has been plenty of time to get over 9/11. Did you hear that Greece was basically obliterated because of wild fires? Did you hear about how many were recently killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan? Did you care?

You are missing something here, CharleyH...it is nearly seventy years since the Pearl Harbor attack and American's still gather to mourn the loss of life.

The World changed on 9/11/01, forever, and the remains of thousands of Americans were never recovered. The three thousand, amplified by husbands, wives and children of those murdered, amplified by the extended families, not just in America, but in the 80 countries that lost people in that heinous crime, do not and will not forget, regardless of your concentration on other things.

Since the recovery operations have ended there is no reason something can't be done with the site, but there is also a sense of callousness to the idea of building on the site. I think there is a large faction that believes building anything on that site other than a memorial is a disservice to those who were murdered there. There is the idea of building something far less grand than the twin towers for practicality reasons competing with the idea of building bigger and better as a fuck you to those who would attack us.

The only thing I can say is that if we do build two big Fuck You towers we had better have some sort of defense in place or they will be going down again. Personally, despite the cost, I like the idea of two big Fuck You towers. We could even name them that.

How much of your personal investment fund would you be willing to invest in a property development corporation, whose only project was to rebuild the WTC?

It's easy to talk about symbols when it's someone else's money.
