I did not understand the point. They are a middle class family that has to make hard choices. So what? My family was in FAR worse shape for FAR longer than them and nobody gave a shit about us because we didn't go whining like a bunch of babies. We're supposed to feel bad for them because they can't go on vacation? We did not go on vacation for 25 years. I worked so much that people thought my wife was a young widow with a baby.
As far as that couple is concerned, I'm rooting for them because I was certainly in their shoes. We should have an economy that gives them an opportunity. Not everyone is capable of advanced degrees, but many people don't make education a priority, and I believe that education is the surest way to economic prosperity.
The government has a role in this. Reduce the tax burden on families like this. Make the terms of student loans favorable. Stop the onerous regulations and tax burdens on small businesses which create jobs. Enact tort reform so that everyone isn't worried about getting sued for everything that goes wrong.
We do have to fix the income discrepancy. There certainly is greed and it is hurting our economy. The Wal-Mart situation is an example. An obscenely profitable company whose workers need government assistance. Call them out. Shame them. Reveal them as the bad corporate neighbor they are.
Put resources in the hands of the people. Give them the resources to afford the life they want.

Its all bullshit because government spends so much money it cant afford to cut taxes for many. Obamullah's whining is the same all the charities do on teevee. FOR JUST $19 A MONTH JOSE AND MARIA CAN EAT MEAT ONCE A WEEK, AND DONATE TO RICH DEMOCRAT POLS, AND HAVE A FEW COINS TO SPARE FOR THEIR RICH POPE.

Ahhh, the old "I've had to struggle so your struggle means nothing" argument.

Based on the second paragraph and on of your post, I think you better understand the point than you realize.

Are you sure on your feelings here? One minute you're calling them whiney babies and re-directing it to how YOU had a hard life... The next you're rooting for them because you've been there.

Ahhh, the old "I've had to struggle so your struggle means nothing" argument.

No, Dear. I mean resources are finite and needs are infinite. What we need to do is agree on priorities and fund them. Obamullah spent 9 million on gasoline for his vacation. 9 million could make lotsa Mexicans happy. Maybe Obamulla needs to vacation closer to home....like Cuba. He and Mooochelle spent 300 a plate for meals, maybe Mooochelle could bag some veggie sticks and mineral water for $5 each. Give the other $590 to Wounded Wimps.

I think the Prez was trying to piss you off.

Seems to have worked.

Ahhh, the old "I've had to struggle so your struggle means nothing" argument.
Absolutely not. But all of us have to struggle to some extent. I CHOSE my struggle and it paid off big time. I'm one of those evil rich people now. People didn't see us when we had nothing. My contemporaries who were out drinking and partying on Saturday night didn't see me in the lab studying slides until 3am. I chose my route, they chose their's.
This economy is awful. There are not enough opportunities. Young people should not have to struggle so much.
Now that I have the resources, I'm sacrificing for the next generation of my family. I'm saving for them so that they might not have to struggle with tuition when the time comes. I feel this is my PERSONAL responsibility. I don't want the government to give them "free" tuition. I also don't want the government to tax the money I'm saving for them to fund this "Free" tuition. I don't like relying on third parties to provide me with things that are my responsibility. I just want the opportunity and the resources to do it.

Then why call this family whiny babies in your opening paragraph?

Because there are a lot of people going throughout what this family is and they don't end up sitting in the box seats at the SOTU.
They were exploited.
Aside from being an example that life is tough, what was the point of their presence? They don't want a hand out which is great.
Apparently they want the opportunity to take care of themselves, which is also great.

Hey, jealousy.

So it should be all the families who are struggling or would a representation of middle class families who are trying to succeed be sufficient? I don't get the anger. I'm not angry because they were there, I get the representation thing, I get that it's a media grab, I get that the whole "invite these everyday people onto this media circus brigade so we can appear to love the little people" thing. It's all silly.

Wait. Are you saying he understands it without understanding that he understands it?

I want to make sure I understand you correctly. And KNOW that I am understanding you.
