I did not understand the point. They are a middle class family that has to make hard choices. So what? My family was in FAR worse shape for FAR longer than them and nobody gave a shit about us because we didn't go whining like a bunch of babies. We're supposed to feel bad for them because they can't go on vacation? We did not go on vacation for 25 years. I worked so much that people thought my wife was a young widow with a baby.
As far as that couple is concerned, I'm rooting for them because I was certainly in their shoes. We should have an economy that gives them an opportunity. Not everyone is capable of advanced degrees, but many people don't make education a priority, and I believe that education is the surest way to economic prosperity.
The government has a role in this. Reduce the tax burden on families like this. Make the terms of student loans favorable. Stop the onerous regulations and tax burdens on small businesses which create jobs. Enact tort reform so that everyone isn't worried about getting sued for everything that goes wrong.
We do have to fix the income discrepancy. There certainly is greed and it is hurting our economy. The Wal-Mart situation is an example. An obscenely profitable company whose workers need government assistance. Call them out. Shame them. Reveal them as the bad corporate neighbor they are.
Put resources in the hands of the people. Give them the resources to afford the life they want.
