WOW it is only one week away. It does not seem like it should be here this soon. I haven't even bought a turkey yet. We are having a quiet thanksgiving, just me, honey and the kids so I only need a small one but geez it has crept up on me.

Sneaky little bastards, those turkeys,,, and the smaller, the more sneaky they are,,,

don't forget the cranberry sauce!

Hard to believe the holidays are here. We will spend the day with my sweetie's family. Last year we spent the holidays with my sisters, but since I am back to work, staying in town this year. I am cooking Christmas Day dinner, just a small group of friends.

Does anyone else NOT want turkey on thanksgiving? I don't hate it, but every year, it's the same damn thing! It's great for sandwiches the days after, but otherwise, nah. Last year I managed to grab leftover chinese food. Now THAT was good T-day food!

I am cooking for Christmas also for the members of my family that can make it. Looks like 16-20, which is a small group for my family.

Jester~Not me I love it. A turkey sandwich on fresh bread with mayo and pepper is the best thing to have while sorting Christmas decorations.

Too much of a holiday tradionalist to ignore turkey for Thanksgiving,,, in fact I'll eat turkey at least once a month all year round.

Julia,,, you have it pegged just right,,, nothing is finer than a turkey sandwich on homemade breads, try the Mrs. Dash garlic, pepper and herb mix instead of pepper,,, nice little twist there.

The holidays are so hard for me, we are trying to start some new traditions, while keeping some of the old ones. I have several friends who have no family here, so rather than them being alone, I am inviting them to spend the day. I love turkey, eat it all year round, but this will be the first one I have cooked in several years. Since I can't sleep through the holidays, I am going to try to spend extra time with my friends who have been so supportive over the last year. I have asked everyone to bring their favorite side dish or dessert. Hopefully it will be the start of a new tradition for me.

teresafannin,,,

Sounds very sensible to me. You can't and shouldn't try to hide the memories or feelings,,, but your approach sounds like it may help you enjoy the holidays again. I do hope that it works for you.

Hugs,
CW

You have to have Turkey on Thanksgiving, like CW said, it's tradition.
The Holidays approach so fast and our lives become very quick paced to get everything done. The turkey has an affect of slowing us down. Don't tell me you don't want a nap after that big meal.
Please remember those less fortunate at this time also. Thanksgiving sure has another meaning when you see the faces at an abuse shelter. If you can lend a few hours, do so, you will be a better person for it.
Ahhh.......pass the rolls please?

I would like to take this opportunity to remind my young
diners that "passing the rolls" is not a football play. Nor is it a request to bean your sister in the head with warm tasty bread.

Well hell,,, THAT takes the fun right out've the entire meal.

Hmmm,,, should I? *thinkging* Oh Hell, why not?

The *PASSING* of the rolls WAS a favorite of mine as a younger kid,,,

That is something that we've done for several years. There is an airforce training base here, so we contact the base chaplin and ask him to recomend three or four lonly air men or women that might need a little homecookinto ease the seperation during the holidays. It is my experance that they are so very aprecaitive, and we have formed several long term freindships that have continued to this day.

Unless you are looking to have a pretty Turkey to crave at the table, I find that they cook best breast side down. That way the juices will flow into the white meat and keep it moist during cooking. I cook the 'stuffing in a seprate pan, so my turkey is stuffed with quartered apples in the cavities. Oh, and the other thing is that the bigger birds are better buys, since they will have a higher meat to bone ratio.
