Do you have a phone with web access, or do you want to send texts from your computer?

When we were in Canada, we both installed Text+ so we could text each other for free over spotty wifi connections, and it worked pretty well.

Otherwise, there are services like this, which will allow you to send texts from your computer AND your phone, if it has internet access: http://www*******textmessage.com/ and http://www.txtdrop.com/

I am not sure about your Telco. But most Telcos have internet SMS services. Google yours to see if you have it

i know alot of phones especially those made by samsung have a simplified version of instant messaging through yahoo msn or aim you might want to look into those as an option.

You can text through yahoo messenger to someones phone or I know I can go to the website of my provider (USCellular) and send a text to someones phone that has USCellular.

Before I had a phone I could text on a friend would text to my email & I could text her back the same way. Her "email" for texting was something like 1235559876@verizon.com. Can she check with her phone provider for a way to make it work?

What she said. SMS texting should be able to be done via email from any provider. For ATT providers it's 1235559876@txt.att.net. Every provider should have an SMS email relay that will do the trick and unless your phone is a cricket phone that just makes calls I would think that even the dumbest smart phone has email capabilities or a brower that can be used to access a browser based email service that will allow you to communicate.

This may be a helpful page: SMS 411

NM, check the carrier of your friend. speaking from personal experience, i can tell you that for AT&T, you can e-mail to [phone number]@mms.att.net.

Yup. My phone isn't even a smartphone, and I can send and receive emails as described above.

I do know that verizon has that capability on their website. But not sure if it has to be a verizon phone number your sending to. Go to their website and they have a link that says send a text message. Have used it before and seems to work good

Thank you everyone for your help, we got it working.

This is the route we took. Easy-peasy to set up and do.

now, if we could only get NM to start using txt-ese... :D

[ducks]

Damn you ed!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

I've come across some images over the past week or so that were perfect to be placed in a few of the text-ese discussions we've had. I refrained from doing so because I didn't want to dredge up old, dead threads nor start a rehash of the debate.

So I will close with Damn you ed!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

FWIW, I'm thrilled this thread is here because I needed to text Hubby last night when my phone was dead. The email route worked perfectly for us.

NM: hey, all part of the service, sir. :>

erika: always nice when a thread can do double-duty!

<Number Removed> txt it for some fun ;)

Reported.

You're not allowed to post personal info (like email addresses or phone numbers) or advertising on here, per Lit's rules (there's a link at the bottom of every page). Hopefully you weren't dumb enough to post your personal number on a public forum, even though it'll be removed by mods soon enough.
