Yes it will work, but might annoy the hell out of some readers.

I quit a story recently exactly because of this. The effect added nothing to the story whatsoever, but was tedious to read. YMMV!

I tend to leave text conversations left justified for both parties, but tag them with the person's initial. For example, a conversation between Jessica and Natasha...

J: Do you punish Charlotte?

N: When she breaks the rule

J: How do you do it?

N: A wooden ruler across her backside

But then it's usually a small section of my overall story. And you're doing a whole story based on a text exchange.

That would be unreadable after a half page or less.

I've adopted a convention of just using single quote marks instead of double, plus spelling out that's it's text.

For multiple messages from the same person, the <br> tag will keep them together rather than leaving a paragraph break. I forgot to do that on Last Christmas, and it doesn't look so good - though one character is communicating in single-characters and other shorthand, so it's still clear who is who.
