Texas Facts

I have heard the song, Raphy. There is a very short list of country songs that I like. That one made the list!

I have penchant for pissing people off and I'm probably going to do it now.

Yes, Texas was stolen from Mexico, as was a large part of the US southwest and west, including California. Long before that, of course, the same area was stolen by Spain from the various Indians that lived there and should have owned it, and hundreds of years after that, Mexico rebelled agains Spain and won their independence.

Everybody has heard of the Alamo but how many have heard of Goleta, which was a battle that happened the same day? The "Texans" who rebelled against Mexico were basically Americans who had settled there and then, when there were enough of them, started the revolution. I don't believe any of the, admittedly brave men, who died at the Alamo were actually natives of Texas.

After annexing Texas, at their request, the US turned a border dispute into a full-scale war, invaded Mexico and easily defeated them. As booty of that war, the large area described earlier was taken. A ridiculously small indemnity was paid to Mexico, but it was not an agreement between equals.

As Rhinoguy said, all of the United States and pretty much all the world was stolen from somebody or other. England was stolen from the Celts by the Romans, then by the Saxons from the decendants of the Anglos and Romans, then by the Normans from the Saxons. After that, the amalgam that became England went around stealing large parts of the world from others, and those "others" had stolen those same parts from others yet. An exception to this is Australia, which has only been stolen once.

All of Europe has been stolen many times, by Romans, Germans, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Swedes, French, Turks, Muslims, Greeks, Carthaginians, Macedonians, Poles, Russians, Huns, Tatars, Etruscans, Celts, and many others. Those ethnicities are in the order that I thought of them, not historically.

The same thing can be said of pretty much the entire world. This is called "History" and complaining about it is about like complaining about water running downhill. It's a fact and can't be undone.

I'm sure you're probably right, BL. In the 1820's, there were only a few thousand Anglo settlers in Texas. Most everyone who subsequently showed up to fight came from other places. The great thing about it is the same thing that you'll still find in Texas today. Those people fought for what they wanted, not what they already had.

Again, you're right...it's all history. I know...I took the class, and I'm impressed with your knowledge.

Didn't the Beverly Hillbillies come from Texas????? lol.

I like Texas toast and Texas Cheeseburgers.

But I don't like big bugs, big snakes and big scorpions.

Armadillos are armoured rats.

I like when Perdita's latina blood boils.

Does a 10 gal. hat really hold that much?

You can't blame Texas for birthing GWB. smack his parents instead.

Mexicans are cute, we've imported some here.

I understand the women there are hot.

Cowboys have nice butts.

There is no basement in the Alamo.

Well, I prefer it to heat up over an hombre than what happened at the Alamo ;)

Here's a Texas fact (At least, I think it's true)

You can fit the UK into Texas twice over, speaking in terms of pure sq. miles.

I don't know numbers, but I would guess that's about right. Texas has plenty of room, that's for sure. It's further from El Paso (far West Texas) to Texarkana (far East Texas) than it is from either Texarkana to Chicago or El Paso to Los Angeles. That's one wide-ass state!

Yeah, and there's close on 60 million people in the UK. Try fitting 120 million people into Texas and see how crowded it gets ;)

I can fit 24 marshmallows in my mouth.

Copied from another thread...

...in case Texans missed it.

My understanding or misunderstanding of Texas:

I thought that the 'typical' Texan was of Mexican descent and spoke Spanish more than English.

The redneck Texan is an endanged species and outnumbered.

At the risk of revealing my true, inner, pedantic nature, here are a few Texas facts.

Total pop: over 21,000,000 (2001 esti)
71% - white
11.5% - black
32% - Hispanic/Latino origin (both black & whiel)
52% - white, not Hispanic/Latino origin
0.6% - American Indian
2.7% - Asian

(note: these figures are based on info. voluntarily submitted during the census)

If the population trend continues, Og's assessment of Texas demographics may become a reality.

A few more factoids:

Mexico won the battle of the Alamo

Three American Presidents were born in Texas: Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, and George. W. Bush. The latter's father George H. W. Bush, was born in Conn. but elected from Texas. Only one President was shot and killed here, so far, John Kennedy.

Music-wise, Willie Nelson is from Texas, so is Nora Jones and Van Cliburn, and so were Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Buddy Holly. You find the connection.

Perdita may have been accurate but redundant when she said without it's Hispanic population, Texas would be the most boring state in the union (I've never been to Iowa). However, all she had to say was, w/o it's Hispanic pop. Texas would be a lot like Oklahoma.
