I don't know how many fans I have on this board, but I've had some success with this on my personal board and in private, so I will post the same offer here. Hope it works out okay.
I am doing with my next story what is referred to in the movie business as a test screening. I have recently had some troubles with the stories I write (site rejection, reposting anger, burnout, lack of feedback, and other issues) and want to try and resolve some of them by doing this. I think the readers and I will all benefit from it. The readers will get a rare insight into the creative process I undergo as a writer and a chance to interact. For me, it will also be a chance to interact and I'll get to see if the common thoughts I get about my stories really are shared by most of my readers. This will help me become a better writer, or so I believe. We'll see if it works. Who knows- it may help you too.
A few details:
- The screening will occur this weekend. On Friday I will send the story out to participants via email or whatever other method they have told me they prefer. Thus Friday, 9 pm Central US Standard Time, is the deadline for participation.
- The story is about 18 pages, 70 KB of text. Its main plot has to do with Celebrity Femslash, as does most of my writing. There's also sports, Internet erotica, a sex club, and a shower involved.
- The story is called "Two Cats in Heat." It is set during the 2004 Olympics and stars softball pitcher Cat Osterman and soccer defender Cat Reddick. Two other celebrity athletes, Jennie Finch and Heather Mitts, play prominent offscreen roles.
- The story was heavily influenced by the writings of Colleen Thomas and I am dedicating it to her memory. Other influences include JRR Tolkien, Dan Millman, Ken Bolton, and NuggetDane.
- If you participate in this screening, I will expect prompt feedback after you read. I do not want anyone to participate who lacks interest or time. The feedback can be praise or criticism, long or short, I don't care. Just say something.
- I want a random sampling of fans for the audience. I don't need them all to be writers, I don't even need them all to be familiar with my stories or the celebrities involved (in fact, I would prefer if they weren't, I always like attracting new fans to both my subjects and myself). I just want people who are willing to read and critique, no other requirements. If you knew Colleen Thomas, it would be especially great if you participated. I did not get to know her myself until after her death and want to make sure I get things right for a reader of her perspective. If you're a Volunteer Editor, well, that would be great too, but I don't need one. My own editor has already looked at the story several times and thinks it's good and meets Lit's requirements. I'm hoping she's right.
- I will probably be altering the story's final product some based on your feedback, but not too much. I never like to, as they say, dumb things down.
If any of you want to take part in this, I highly welcome your interest. Post your interest here and tell me how you would like to receive the story (I usually send text attachments, but that doesn't work for everyone).
