With everything on egg shells here it is inevitable that the local news offers suggestions. What suggestions are they offering in your neck of the woods?

This was on tonight: They suggest that some terrorist actions will occur this weekend.

Suggestions try to have three days worth of water and food. Plastic to cover windows and such and duct tape. It did not go into specific but it was mentioned after bio/chemical threat.

Peace,
Tulip

I honestly don't know why everyone is walking on egg shells.

What the DHS said was simple, common sense, and stuff we've known for well over a year. Terrorists want very much to strike the US and kill as many Americans as possible. Al Qaeda likes to strike around Muslim holy occasions, and prefers to strike a target it's tried to strike before, but failed. The level of chatter our intelligence community monitors has picked up, probably because we are on the advent of the Hajj, which among Muslims, is a pretty huge deal.

So they're saying that we should make some contingency plans shouold anything happen: keep a food and water reserve, be sure you have a place to meet family should you be separated in an emergency, etc. That's all very prudent information we should have been doing a long time ago.

It's really not worth all the anxiety.

exactly. London's been on alert all day, but you can't run around yelling "the sky is falling!". You have to be sensible, but get on with your life.

You are probably right about

adding to the anxiety level. I am curious to see what is being said in other parts of the country. Living in NY has added to an extra anxiety since 9/11. Last I know we the U.S. have been in code orange which is heightened security. How does this affect others in the U.S.?

Let's face it if there was any way a nucleur bomb would reach NYC I am fucked. I am close enough to get the effects of it all and not close enough to die instantaneously. Sounds mobid but being a realist. Realize I go on with my every day life and refuse to live my life in fear.

Peace,
Tulip

The key is to be proactive not reactive. When I adjust my life patterns to what "THEY" might do, I lose.

Besides, in a worse case scenario, I've already come to the conclusion that I am not going to make it out of this life alive.

I'm in Colorado...

Denver, to be exact, and, my better half works out at a local military base -- he's NOT in the military... but we live close enough to NORAD that things can get a bit on the nervous side.

I haven't heard much this week (so far) about what Colorado-ans are "supposed" to be doing. But when I do, will let y'all know!

A philosopher said thousands of years ago the only thing we are guaranteed in life is to die.

Another- the moment we are born we are heading towards death.

*wow I do sound morbid but I do not mean it to sound so dramatic. Again just a realist. If you think about it our lives are just a speck of time on this planet. A blink of an eye. Even if I make it to live in the 80's it is still a short period of time.

Peace,
Tulip

Thank you Crickett

I think that some people in certain parts of the country do not have as much to worry about. No offense intended towards anybody.

I remember a month after the WTC when the plan to Dominican Republic went down in the Rocakways I was like can they pick on another state. I can't speak for any other New Yorkers but I do know that within my mind from time to time I feel the aftermath. I suppose that is why I bring up such topics from time to time in order to educate myself. It is better to be informed than not. Again I continue to go on with everyday life. I travel in the city as often as I can. I refuse to live in fear even though in the back of my mind it comes forth from time to time.

Peace,
Tulip

Take comfort in the fact that wherever terrorists are moving about citizens around them are more vigilant and watchful because of the warning, and perhaps lives will be saved.

You should be afraid, Tulip...you live in the place the AQ most wants to destroy and has already hit a couple of times.

NYC & London are the two prime targets right now.

If I lived in either city I'd leave for a few weeks or consider moving for good.

The chances of a nuclear bomb hitting NYC are better than ever given the 26 thefts of devices/components out of Russia since 2000 and their tracing along routes out to Afghanistan.

CIA report details thefts of nuclear fuel from Russia

Monday, February 25, 2002
WASHINGTON — The CIA has warned that more nuclear fuel could be stolen from Russian facilities and diverted to organizations deemed as terrorist.

A CIA report to Congress released last week cited several major thefts of nuclear fuel from Russia in the 1990s. In 1992, 1.5 kilograms of enriched uranium was taken from the Luch Production Association. In 1994, another three kilograms of enriched uranium was stolen from Moscow. In 1998, additional nuclear material was stolen from the Chelyabinsk province.

So, in this whole thread, not one word about WHO the terrorists are!!!!!!!

Not one word on how we should excise the threat from the body of our country.

Why is that word, why is that need to extracate this disease from inside our country not even mentioned?

Keep it real...

If they want to hurt us, it'll be a psychological damaging hit like Wall Street, or the Statue of Liberty.
If they try to disperse agents, the hospitals have all been upgraded to put out the warning as soon as it happens.
Just keep your eyes and ears open, look at Israel as small as it is, and the amount of bombings per square mile.
I don't know how far you live from the port, but the only way to get it is to detonate a nuke in a boat about 4 miles out. The average nuke only has a fireball of about a mile, with 2-3 miles severe blast damage, combined with the wave of water from a water burst. Most of the radiation is immediate heat and gamma. Residual radiation is from any debris that is in the fall pattern, and lasts about 2-3 weeks of high RAD readings.
Live your life, and be resolved to the fight.

Keep informed to relieve fear;

Here's some material on what happens when a suitcase nuke goes off in NYC.

A very cool link!

I question the 150 kiloton backpack assessment, as the ones I've seen are about 1.5 kt. They were developed to wipe out warsaw pact supply lines, while minimizing collateral civilian damage. The larger the yield, the larger the bomb required. I worked 20 megaton nukes, and they were about 4ft in diameter.
That is not to say the terrorist couldn't put a big nuke into a UPS truck and do it, after all you have Hillary and Schumer protecting you!
Just remember this worst case scenerio, and maybe believe we have intell that drives our attack on Iraq, to avert just this kind of attack in New York, Boston, or Miami.

Backup data..

The U.S. backpack nuke weighs 163 pounds and can be carried by one or two men. One Russian naval arms compilation talks about small portable nuclear weapons weighing from 59 pounds to 154 pounds.

One former American scientist who worked at the Department of Energy labs said that the "Davy Crocket," which was the small bomb later converted to special operations, had a one-kiloton explosive power and would level the Capitol Building and everything in a half mile radius. It also would spread radioactive waste across a wide area of Washington. The bomb the U.S. dropped on Hiroshima was 15 kilotons. (Each kiloton has an explosive power equal to 1,000 tons of TNT.)

Terrorists are working to obtain biological, chemical, nuclear and radiological weapons and the threat of an attack is very real. Here at the Department of Homeland Security, throughout the federal government, and at organizations across America we are working hard to strengthen our Nation's security. Whenever possible, we want to stop terrorist attacks before they happen. All Americans should begin a process of learning about potential threats so we are better prepared to react during an attack. While there is no way to predict what will happen, or what your personal circumstances will be, there are simple things you can do now to prepare yourself and your loved ones.

PP you can call it

propaganda but in NY news they had mentioned London on alert as well as several other cities. Question since you seem to stay on top of the news and well read: What have you heard about it in your neck of the woods concerning terrorist threats?

Peace,
Tulip

I don't know anything about any alerts, just saying that according to most of the things I have read, Al Qaeda has a strong presence in Britain. That being said, they have a strong presence in the U.S. as well. I think Lancecastor said if he lived in London or Washington DC, he would move...I might agree.
