A friend said they just saw something on the news about a condominium in CA being blown up... and then *zap*... nothing more on it.

Anyone heard of this?

Could just be misinformation... but I was curious.

Thanks, raindancer!

My co-worker was wondering about it and I figured someone here would know something! :D

I immediately get a bit nervous when I hear such news. I try to calm myself and find a news site. I'm hoping for the best. Loss of any life saddens me.

It's not far from me, in Encino. They think it was a natural gas explosion (determined from the way the building was blown).

I'm the same way.

I'll be watching for updates.

Sounds like a natural gas explosion. A few years back a super blew up his building by accident while trying to fix the boiler.

Thanks for letting us know, DCL.

I'm glad you are far enough away. :)

Scary... hopefully it's not an actual terrorist attack though. It's times like these I'm glad I live in a tiny little rural town :)

They had dogs sniffing for bombs at my sister's graduation ceremony this morning.

She goes to a school of about 600 kids... in a town of about 2,000 people.

I hate feeling anxious like that... Even people in small towns are concerned enough to take such precautionary measures.

But I'm sure it's more along the lones of what CE said.. :D I'm hoping for the best. ;)

I'm sure it was just a natural gas explosion.

But, as long as we're talking about this...have any of you country music fans (yes, YOU, in the corner, the one with the stupid hat) heard this Godawful song about how America is gonna kick some ass and the Statue of Liberty is shaking her fist and the Bells of Freedom are doing some damn thing? I caught it flipping between radio channels that play actual music. Do the other people in your cult like this?

:D

As an occasional member of the Country Music Cult, I've actually never heard this song.

But, to country music's credit, have you heard Alan Jackson sing this song yet?

Where Were You

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below

Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

The greatest is love

Thanks, hon. I'm well.

But that wasn't a poem - that was a song. And it wasn't *my* song!

Yeah, I heard it. Not crazy about that one either, but not because it's jingonistic and cretin-inspired like the other one, just because it's mediocre. Not that it's not honest and heartfelt, just mediocre. Kind of like how everyone really wanted "We Are the World" to be a good song, but it just wasn't.

Have you heard the "Lets Roll Song?"

It is about the same as the Alan Jackson one. Just not very good.

Heh. Yeah, I see your point.

Kinda like how all my favorite movies aren't actually *good* movies... just ones I relate to.

And, no, Azwed, I haven't heard that song.

From the Associated Press:

L.A. Building Rocked by Explosion

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A large residential building was rocked by an explosion and erupted in flames Friday. There was no immediate word on whether anyone was hurt.

The blast hit the building in the Encino area of the San Fernando Valley about 11 a.m., Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.

Building debris littered the area around the complex.

I've heard that one. Not mediocre, but not all that good either. Again, very sincere and honestly inspired, just not that good. The other one with the "Fuck'em up" lyrics "courtesy of the red, white and blue" is an ugly song pretending to be an anthem.

Found it. Toby Keith's "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)". Think of it as a cross between "Over There" and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", only sucky.

I think I have heard it, now that you mention it... Definitely not one of his better songs.

But, then again, most of those guys don't write anything themselves, anyhow.

*shrug*

Disclaimer: I'm not a "country music person". lol I listen to pretty much everything - my tastes are all over the place.

Have you ever been to Encino? It's Mayberry with drive-bys.

I am up the road apiece from Encino. It's true. And most drive like Opie before he got a license.
