Compatibilism combined with determinism and some free actions makes the most sense to me.

It it worded ok and not too akward to start a paragraph with.

It's kind of awkward, maybe:

Free actions combined with compatibilism (is this even a word?) and determinism would make the most sense to me.

Hey, I tried!

:D

Yeah it is a word. A crasy messed up philosophy word that will most likely not be in any of the normal dictionaries but still a word.

Is "compatibilism" a word? Nothing wrong with coming up with new words, of course. It's probably ok as a first sentence as long as you go on to explain what you mean by the long words for dunces like me. You have to decide if you're using those words 'cause you want people to immediately understand what you're trying to say (it didn't work for me), or just to show what long words you know (well, I was impressed). ;)

I don't know about that first one, depends on the type of audience you are going after but that second one, "It it worded ok and not too akward to start a paragraph with.." needs a bit of help I think. ;)

Oh think you are so cute huh ;)

Compatibilism means that both deterimism and freedom are possible in the universe. You can have a world where some of your actions are chosen by you freely, but some of your actions were not chosen by you and were determined by prior circumstances. That is the short definition at least. You don't want the long one.

Suggestion

A combination of compatibilism, determinism, and free action makes the most sense to me.

*Note - if compatibilism includes determinism, then wouldn't that be redundant? Is your audience already familiar with the word, either from an earlier paragraph, or from general understanding [a term of art within the philosophical set]?

ROFL!! I did not even want the short explanation. ~laughing really good now~ I knew what you meant but I just had to do it. This urge comes over me sometimes you see and I have to go with it or wear out more batteries in my "toy". And I do not know if I am cute or not, cute is in the eyes of the beholder. I am willing to let you behold me. ;)

No it does not work that way. You can be a compatiblist and yet have deterimism be false. Compatibilism is how a group of people view the world. You can be in that group and belive it strongly, but if it is actually true that determism is false then you are still a compatibilst.

You planning on disputing the fundamental thesis of Jubien's Contemporary Metaphysics that compatibilism cannot be reconciled with the philosophical doctrine of determinism?

*shudder*

I hate school!

Anywho, as to the sentence, it is a little awkward. How about:

"Combining the seemingly antithetical doctorines of Compatibilism and determinism is more defensible when the concept of free will is introduced."

or something like that....

I could behold you once I finish this damn philosopy eassy. Grrr I hate these kinds of things. There is no way to prove any of this at all. Not even to come close to it. I don't see any point in arguing for determinism, idealism, dualism or whatever because there is not way to prove you are right. Hell, even if you were then how would the world change?? It would not change at all since you have no power to change it.

Yeah you got it Bob. Luckily my Phil prof agrees with me that combatibilism and determinsm can coexist.

That wording does sound better, but it sounds nothing like my style. Would look very out of place in the rest of my paper.

I DO understand! You should have had to argue against the "Good and Evil" crap that I did. I sympathize. I will wait until you are finished and then we can behold each other. ;)

Hmhh oh really now I am curious.

Curiosity will not get your paper done, well at least not your curiosity about me. :D This can wait until you have completed this paper from hell that will explain nothing and mean nothing to the world, just like mine did, and thousands of more like us. Just make it so boring your Professor skips over most of it and gives you a good grade. THAT is the secret. ;)

Done and turned in. To bad it sucks ass. I really need to stop putting these papers off till the last minute. I did not even start the research for my ten page paper till three days before it was due.
