Actually Obama has referred to his Republican opposition as terrorists, kidnappers, and arsonists.

If this was five years ago I'd be ashamed of Obama using such heated rhetoric as that against the opposition party. After five years of listening Senators shouting 'You Lie!', Governors wagging their fingers in his face, an entire series of debates were he was referred to as Barrack Obama and Mr. Obama not Mr. President or President Obama, of him being called post Constitutional, unlawful, and America hater it's well past time he took off the kid gloves. Five years ago I would have called foul for him lowering the level of politics in this nation. Five hours ago I was pleased to see he finally grew the spine necessary to stand his ground.

The huge problem Cruz has is his Achilles heel, and it could easily prove to be his own biggest lost cause...

...IF he vainly decides to run for POTUS.

Cruz's base of strength lies in the TEA Party, and he can in no way afford to lose any of their staunch support - that staunch support is the only reason he's still walking the halls of Congress so confidently today.

The main link between Cruz and the TEA Partyers is - allegedly - their shared affinity for old school Americana, founded upon the political fundamentals of the Declaration and cemented with Constitution originalism.

Cruz's Achilles heel in relation to those fundamental/originalism ties lies in the fact that his father wasn't an American citizen when the younger Cruz was born, and that he was born in Canada, not America...

...which would clearly disqualify him for eligibility for the Office of President according to the same original fundamentals he and the TPs so loudly proclaim they're loyal to, for the founders and framers considered only those born to parents who were both American citizens to be natural born citizens.

Remember the uproar from the TPers and uberconservative politicos like Cruz in regards to Obama's dad not being a citizen and the possibility that Obama wasn't born in the US...

...well how, with any credibility whatsoever, can the TP or Cruz now claim that even though Cruz in that regard is even less eligible, they're going to support him for President and he's going to run for President anyway?

The more Ted Cruz allows speculation to linger that he will run for President, the more true Tpers will shy away from him, at least in their red, white, and blue minds. And if the day comes when he actually announces he's a candidate for POTUS, that will be the very same day he loses the strength of the political support he now exhilarates in...

...because the only voters right of the progressives who will then support Cruz are TPINOs and various scattered partisan hacks like vetteman.

Ted Cruz is a brilliant politician, he is a true constitutional scholar, and I don't yet doubt that he loves the foundational political principles of America just as much as the framers themselves...

...but he, like Alexander Hamilton, would never have been even considered as a candidate for POTUS by the framers, because neither of them were/are seen through the founders eyes as natural born citizens.

I see Ted Cruz as the most ardent champion of individual liberty in Congress today, and individual liberty to me is the most vital political need this country continues to bleed itself of. I love that Cruz is a player in Congress so soon and, as a resident of Texas, I like seeing him in those hallowed halls. I think, though, he is more suited to a seat with the Supremes and it'd be so friggin' cool seeing what him and Thomas could cook up...

...but if Ted Cruz decides he's going to run for President, he will find no support from me because that will clearly tell me he doesn't quite walk like he obviously loves to talk.

The whole refusal to compromise thing is just an internal battle for position in the TeaOP. Everyone knows that the debt ceiling will be raised, the question is who on the right side of the aisle will be "left" holding the bag/hoptpotato/musical chair. NEgotiations with Obama have nothing to do with it.

Give Vetty credit for consistency, Pete, he's opined from day one that he'd rather see America fail than a Democratic President succeed.

Just yesterday he was advocating America default on its sovereign debt to send a message to the Negar President. Sure it took a dozen attempts to get him on the record, but eventually he caved in.

It's his "Marine Corps virtue", something us civilians will never unnerstand....

My reality is well within reach. I am watching your bozos reciting Green Eggs and Ham instead of negotiating on a budget.

The tea baggers are doing a fine job of sealing the deal for the next elections. How any sane American can vote Republican is beyond me.

Boulder and the foothills are fucked. The rivers and stream beds that take the water away from the mountains are fucked. Fortunately, my home was not chewed up like so many others.

I heard I-25 was blocked in a few places is that true?

This is true. I-25 was closed between Wyoming and Ft. Collins. There was a detour off of I-25 that only lasted for an exit or two between Ft. Collins and Denver. I-25 is looking good now.

The state highways that weave in and out of the front range are messed up. Huge sections have been washed out leaving some of the mountain towns isolated or hours of driving to get around the mess.

Obama said he would help us out. That was prior to the Green Eggs and Ham. Now? Nobody knows.

Right, but that's a given. He's in a position where shooting the hostage is the only rational move.

All the action is on the other side. It's not that they're trying to see how close to the edge they can get (outside of a few dead-enders), it's that they're all jockeying to maximize their political capital from this situation.

Those folks weren't elected to roll over for Obama.

Unfortunately, they've volunteered for a last stand, like Custer's cavalry. They're holding no cards, just the vague hope that if they seem resolute enough they can make Obama blink. The best outcome for Cruz and others of his ilk is 1. Obama, always the nice guy, throws them some face saving bones here and there despite not giving on any of the major issues like the ACA. and 2. they're positioned on the far right wing of the party when the crunch comes.

I don't think it's impossible by any means that the aggregate result of the individual career-oriented decisions of many TOP congressmen ("Stand firm against Obama and hope that someone else cracks and saves the economy while leaving me looking good to my consituents") could be a default.

Americans by a 2-to-1 ratio disagree with President Barack Obama’s contention that Congress should raise the U.S. debt limit without conditions.

Instead, 61 percent say that it’s “right to require spending cuts when the debt ceiling is raised even if it risks default,” because Congress lacks spending discipline, according to a Bloomberg National Poll conducted Sept. 20-23.

That sentiment is shared by almost three-quarters of Republicans, two-thirds of independents, and a plurality of Democrats. Just 28 percent of respondents backed Obama’s call for a clean bill that has no add-on provisions.

Interesting poll!

The exact same poll shows that 59% of Americans believe "the deficit is growing", when it is actually shrinking at the fastest rate since WW2.

The poll does nothing but show the effectiveness of shrill conservative demagogery.

Many people "hate" Obamacare but when you ask them about the individual components, they love 'em.

We're turning into a nation of Vettemans, people untethered from reality who have been trained to disregard inconvenient facts.
