I'm trying to work out how to include italics and coloured text in a post on this board, but I can't find a clear set of instructions. It's obviously possible, because others do it.

If anybody can tell me specifically:

a) how to post selected text in italics

and

b) how to put selected text in a colour other than basic black

I'll be grateful and delighted.

(PS: Apologies for my empty post on the erotica/porn thread. That was the failed result of an experiment with italics and colour.)

(I also can't spell 'technical' today, I'm afraid.)

Sounds like you have the basic editor selected.

Go to "User CP" at the top of the forum.
Then click on "Edit Options" in the lower part of the left sidebar of that page.
Then scroll down to "Misc. Options"
In that section, you should see a dropdown box for the editor. Select "Standard Editor"

After that, you should see all the formatting controls at the top of the post window.

You don't have to use the controls, though. Here's how to do italics by just typing it.

Italic Text comes out Italic Text

Bold works the same way, except you put a b in the brackets instead of an i.

OK. I assume that you mean when posting to a thread.
In the message box headers, you will see a number of options.
B is BOLD, I is Italics, and U is underline

Just highlight the selected text and click on the one you want. One thing though. Don't expect it to display immediately; you'd better print a preview to see it.

By the same token, you can select from a list of fonts. And, as if that's not enough, you can have some very large type, adjusted by
SIZE

The Colour selection is by the Size box.

and is operated the same way.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks to both Darkniciad and Handley Page. I think I've got it now.

Stop that.

It's beyond annoying as hell, and the attention you seek could be better gained with a quick wit and a fun disposition.

If you want to be known only as "that guy who only posts in red and italics" [insert eye-rolling here], then...by all means, knock yourself out. Its only fair to let you know, however, that a lot of people won't even read what you post if you insist on using an obnoxious color/font/italics.

I won't.

Huh? The poster was just demonstrating that the instructions he/she received on the procedures he asked about worked.

The omnipotent Great cloudy has issued a shrill order to, "Stop that." It's obviously a great sin to annoy her.

Your self-annointed position as forum dictator is hilarious. Your hypocrisy is simply astounding; on the one hand, you perpetually profess tolerance yet, a minute later, display an intolerance that is breathtaking in its chutzpah. What is truly amazing is that you are apparently oblivious to the fact of your intolerance. The tone of your words bear all the signs of someone with a gargantuan chip on your shoulder and an inferiority complex the size of the Grand Canyon. The never-ending attempts to establish an identity as a Southerner and aborigine is a certain sign of your doubt. You reveal your insecurity every time you intentionally create an argument and the complete lack of self-discipline is evident in your inability to control your temper. People despise you behind your back. You haven't the self-awareness to realize that it is you who is doing the attention-seeking. You are indistinguishable from the very "trolls" you perpetually rail against.

For far too long, in the spirit of "live and let live," your gratutitous, intentionally offensive and mean-spirited insults have been allowed to pass without rebuke.

I don't give a goddamn in hell what you think and I don't give a shit's worth of care what you choose to read or not read.

Who in fuck do you think you are? You have no authority here.

Hey, Pilot! Where ya been hiding? Haven't seen you hanging around lately.

Writing up a storm. Am already five e-books into my 2011 listing at eXcessica and busy scraping together five more. Plus just released one at another publisher that's doing really, really well (reported on new books string).

Plus the editing for other folks. (and watching the Australian Tennis Open, which I went to last year at this time).

Plus there hasn't been all that much discussion that has interested me--although he does look like it's been fairly quiet and mostly civil of late.

I'm a person, just like you, and just as fucking entitled to my own opinion as you are - that's who, asshole.

Who the fuck do you think you are?

(If you have problems coming up with an answer, I've got some words that come to mind real, real fucking easy - like "uptight dickhead who thinks he's more intelligent, better reasoned, more knowing, just fuckiing MORE than anyone else here."

You aren't. You're just an annoying little pissant who craves attention, because somewhere deep inside, you feel inadequate as hell, for whatever reason.

Here's your sign:

Excuse me Cloudy, but I think you are either trying to raise a storm or really trying to mis-understand.

To my mind, there is a very valid place for a variety of fonts & colours in a text. God knows, it took long enough to crawl out from the straight-jacket of letter hierarchy left by use of the typewriter.

The use of a colour to indicate an aside or off-topic remark is used well on this site. Just because you want to stay with Verdana roman, Black, size 2 does not mean that the rest of us have to do the same, or even want to.
Italics are very useful is indicating quotes from external sources.
(Certain fonts and styles may also define a particular character)

If your comments were a deliberate attempt to get a rise, you succeeded.
If they were not, I recommend you crawl back into your typewriter shell world and watch the stars go by.

Right. Which is why I found it a headscratcher. The OP didn't say how the knowledge would be used--just asked for the knowledge that most of the rest of us already have.

Sometimes civil is boring and sometimes, it's just good to have.

I guess you have been busy. Was 2011 a typo, or are you really a year ahead? I didn't know you did editing. Please try not to cringe at my typing.

Nope, not a typo. At least one release a month between now and March 2011 are already "in the can" at eXcessica (two at another publisher), with covers and everything. Three more are at my editor's; I have bits and pieces of three more after that written, and the concepts written in for five after that. And that's just the erotica. I have a deadline looming for a mainstream novel as well--and that's mostly done. It too won't be published until 2011.

Not too dull around here, though--at least for me. Just not that many threads I feel like posting to.

I'm speechless. You go, Pilot!
