My computer does not have Internet Explorer due to stupid user error  and my computer refuses let DL it from Microsoft.com.

My question is, if I go DL it to disk from my dad's computer.. and he's in Windows XP.. and I'm on Windows 98.. will it be compatible.. will it make a difference?

I dont think it will make a difference. After you get it installed go to the windows update site and d/l the update. You will be back to surfin the porno in notime.

No difference. Any difference will be taken care of when you install it.

Of course, I am hoping you mean that you are going to download or copy an installation file, and not try to copy his installed copy from his computer. Too often people think they can just copy something already installed over to their computer and it doesn't work - computers aren't that simple anymore.

Try to get the latest version 6.x as it has all kinds of updates and security patches you should have. If you have your original Windows install disk there should be a copy of IE on it too.

An installation file? Okay, so I can't go to his IE file and DL it to disk then come home and install? Somehow?

Fuck. :(

I deleted anything and everything to do with IE.. and I've been trying to get it back, unsuccessfully. My computer refuses to DL it from the website.. and I have the Windows install disk, but I don't want to mess with it.. afraid i'm gonna screw up my computer, don't want it wiped clean.

I don't need it to view porno either.. I need it because I can't run certain games.. or Nortons anti-virus.. or have Yahoo and MSN messenger without it.

Dayum. :(

You can't use Netscape to download IE?

How odd.. sounds like maybe you have another problem lurking around

Sorry babe, but you might need to reformat the comp.

If you need to save (backup) stuff (pics).. instead of doing it on disk.. send them to me :D I promise to watch over them ;)

You can select which programs on the disk you want to install. There is an install file for IE only on the Windows CD. Select that file and you shouls have IE back up in just a few minutes.

*sob* I don't want to reformat. :(

I have too much on here.. I'd have 100's of floppy's methinks. :(

shitdamnfuckitalltohell.

My computer also will not shut down properly.. sometime it will not shut down at all.. so I have to hit the switch in the back, then I fuck up my computer doing that.. I don't have a virus.. I don't have a trojan.

I have to reboot my computer several times a day because it will just stop. Like if I want to go from page one to oage two on Lit, it will think and think and think, but never go to page two. It kicks me off AIM when it does that.

*sob* again.

That's how Windows 98 is. After awhile, it gets congested and just craps out. It's a terrible OS, if you ask me. When I had it, I reformatted every few months.

Now, if you don't want to COMPLETLEY reformat, you can put all your files into a particular folder and just delete the other folders on your computer from DOS... then reinstall Windows. I've done that before. Not quite a format, but close enough if you NEED to save files.

Only options I see are

1. Reformat
2. Buy new computer

:D

your computer is doing exactly what mine was doing awhile ago.

I ended up reformatting and keeping up on the maintenance. I haven't had any problems since doing that.

buy some floppys.. back up and reformat.. sorry Licky, it sounds like that is your only option (unless ofcourse you want to buy a new comp. And if you do that, can i have your old one? :D)

you dont need to reformat ... when people reinstall windows it go's over the top of the old one so it doesnt really reinstall what you need to do is :

1) make a boot disk in windows startup

2) reboot your computer into dos go into windows directory and rename win.com to win.old

3) rename the windows dir to windows.old

4) shut down the computer and reboot from boot disk

5) reinstall windows

if anything gos wrong (it shouldnt) just go backwards through the steps renaming the win.com file and windows directory ... you have to rename win.com even if you change the windows directory windows instill will find the old windows unless you rename win.com

Windows isn't the whole problem though. Would reinstalling windows help with all the other problems (not just the lack of IE but everything else she described)?

yes it should do unless there is a hard disk failure ... if you are getting lots of scandisk errors and stuff then it might actually be a hard disk problem and then reformating wouldnt make any difference anyway

it doesnt take too long to reinstall windows this way and you'll still have all your old applications saved on the computer (you might have to reinstall some of those because you'll lose all the shortcuts)

1) You don't need to reformat.
2) You don't need to get a new computer.
3) You probably don't need to reinstall windows - you rarely need to do that. This is what people suggest to do when they don't know how to fix your problem.
4) Just reinstall IE from your install disk or download the install file on someone else's computer (it is a huge file). You don't say why you can download it on your computer. You obviously have 'net access - what is it saying? It is unecessarily complex though; MS tries to force you to download a stub file and then that installs it over the 'net, but I believe you can download the whole thing too. Where are you trying to download it from?
5) You shouldn't try to delete IE willy nilly; MS has integrated it into the OS and deleting it can screw things up - as I think you are now finding out.
6) If you still don't have it fixed by this weekend I can bring down a CD with the install file this weekend. It will not fit on a floppy - the stub will though.

No, oh no!

First thing, don't download, spend a few dollars and buy a PC magazine, that has IE on it, save time and errors!

Next, it you want to reinstal win p8, two files you must rename.

Yes, rename win.com but with win 98 you must also rename winver.exe.

You can reinstall easier if you have the Win upgrade CD, but if you have the full version one, you must rename these files.

It is called a refresh, rather than a format, it still leaves junk things, reg errors, but it is better than a format to start with.

Do a defrag of course, I found a great defrag program on one of my CD's from PC User, faster!
It's called Power defrag.

Never try to copy a whole thing from another pc, it's too big and causes errors, buy a magazine, it usually has the basics!

Nope - those days are long gone. Now applications have hundreds of files scattered all over the place, and some of them you just can't get to or copy because they are hidden system files, or access to them is denied while the computer is in use. This is especially true of MS apps.

As I recall, a complete install download of IE takes up about 6 MB - way too large to fit on one floppy.

Shy Tall Guy, I want you to know you are not helping any here.

Licky reformatting her computer has been a joke between her and I for awhile. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't tell her differently ;)

And.. yes she needs a new computer. How else am I going to get her old one (for free)?

:D

Sounds like it should work.

But I use Netscape 7 most of the time.

A couple of good programs

These you can download, but I prefeer to get them from CD's from computer magazines, quicker and less risk of virus.

Power Defrag 2.00 Lite
TheWindows native Disk Defragmenter is a utility which has been hobbled by the rapid advance of drive technology. It works just fine on a smallish disk of 8G or so, but use it on a 20G drive or one of the new 100G drives and you can say goodbye to using your computer for the most part of a day. (Although Microsoft says it's OK for you to use your computer while defragging, in practice this rarely works, because every write to disk causes Defrag to return to restart). If you'd like to speed up Defrag and eliminate some of its problems, give Power Defrag 2 a try. On this CD we have included the freeware version.

THE NEXT IDIOT thaT SAYS "reformat" it is gonna incur Draco's immeasurable wrath.

Are you fucking nuts or something....??

Put your windows CD in its drive...browse to the Win98 folder and find setup.exe and run it...it will set up windows OVER itself in Windows mode, retaining all your hardware and software configuration. You will losse nothing and get a clean set of system files as an added bonus....

If you format it...you will loose EVERYTHING.....

Please people, stop giving out un-informed advice.

HUH?

I never said format!
I hate formatting

Takes so long to get everything back!
To install things again!

I said refresh!

And I umm, disagree Draco!
It don't get rid of the junk!
It will fix stuff, but the junk is still there!
But yeah, it's better to do it that way first!
Until your PC is so full of junk stuff!

Lots of programs around to help get rid of the stray links, shortcuts, un-needed stuff, drivers etc

I am pondering the format, I don't want to, but...
Sometimes you just have to have a complete clean up!

Luckily I have a second H/D, that's where all my personal stuff is, C drive is just programs, but still, a lot to do!

As Draco said, try everything else first, much easier than starting from scratch!

LOL at Draco, it's an ID ten T, in techo lingo!

That is the polite way of saying it!

Young Kristin, the editor of our trivia publication, was having trouble with her computer. So she called Wes, the computer guy, over to her desk. Wes clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away Kristin called after him, "So, what was wrong?"

And he replied, "It was an ID ten T error."

A puzzled expression ran riot over Kristin's face. "An ID ten T error?"

What's that in case I need to fix it again?"

He gave her a grin. "Haven't you ever seen an ID ten T error before?"

"No!"

"Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out."

Whoa, Dragonette. I wasn't referring to your post at all.
You always post some great advice and links.

I was referring to this and other times on the board when the "know-it-all's" jump in with FORMAT IT as their one and only catch cry. Hell, we even had one here one day that said the answer was FDISK...Sheezuz.
That REAL handy advice...if you want to fuck your HDD right over...go ahead, be my guest. I'll rememebr to charge you double for my services.

OK, Licky, find a magazine CD and try to install IE from it first. It may not work because of the "Uninstall Information" held by Windows configuration. IE is embedded into Win 98 so deeply that you cant just remove the folder and its gone. Its never that simple.

Ok, if that doesn't work, then you need to do a bit of sdeerious maintainence to get it back. Make a copy (back-up) anything critical you want to save. (Best to be safe than sorry here). Open your C:\windows\temp folder in Explorer and delte the entire contents. DELETE it all, not just send it to Recycle Bin.

(TIP 1 Open the temp folder, select 1 file and hit CTRL-A, this will select all files in folder, then hold your SHIFT key down and press the DEL button, this by-passes the Recycle Bin and deletes everything.)

Go to the Temorary Internet Files Folder and you will see 1 folder called Content.IE5 (or similar). Open it and there will be 1-10 folders inside it. CTRL-A and SHIFT-DELETE it. Thats all that taken care of.

Now insert your Win98 cd and cancel the "Auto-Run", open the cd and browse to the Win98 folder. Open it and find SETUP.EXE and run it, this will run the Win98 setup in windows mode and install over itself. All your desktop, folders, etc will be preserved, and IE should be back. It takes about 1/2 an hour, which is better than the day or two to return your machine from a FORMAT.

Hope this helps.

Freaky, you didn't recommend Me on this occasion, I'm gutted, (removing your name from my xmas list....JK)

OK, now my rant. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, DONT HAND OUT BAD ADVICE TO PEOPLE. Format is a misused tool for preparing NEW HDD's only. It has no other real use.

I recommend everyone find a copy of GO-BACK. Also, if you have a large HDD, (over 6 gig) Find Partiton Magic and create another partition in it. Then back up all your data that is critical to you to this partition. I have many horror storys of Win98 nuking its FAT table and destroying 40 gigs worth of data (critical data on Business machines.)

Hope this helps you all. Please note, I am available to anyone here on the board for PC technical assistance, Just PM or email me at kurgzcomp@yahoo.co.nz. I dont charge and I dont bite...much.
