Tech Question -- Geeks Please Reply

Hi everbody.

I need a question answered please, concerning switching my internet and phone stuffs.

Now, AT&T, who sux big donkey dicks, is my internet and phone provider, I have DSL and reg olden tyme land line phone thingie.

But, since AT&T sux, I had Earthlink put in the same thing. They ran another line from the telephone pole and all that, it took over a month, but I haven't hooked it up yet and am about to.

Wow, anyways, when I hook it up am I gonna have, I assume, a different ISP address or something? I figure I will have to call and talk to them to get it configured but they prolly won't know stuff like am I gonna look like a new computer on sites. Do I need to save any info's and stuff?

I know my passwords and things, will that be enough if I just go to my favorite sites and re-login?

I hope somebody knows, I know lots but I have never done this, and am trying to be prepared, before I do it.

Not exactly. The same login isn't enough to make EVERYTHING the same.

But if you use the same computer, and you said you are, then your cookies will be the same, and that will probably be enough. So you should be fine.

You are the same person online. And if you saved your passwords on your computer, there will be no changes.

To begin, they will probably tell you to turn off your computer and turn on the DSL system and let it cycle through.

Then turn on your computer. The DSL will find your address and route it through automatically.

(We have 4 computers on our system - wireless and nonwireless. Each time we make an adjustment we have to let the system cycle through.)

Ok, I was hoping that, I didn't want sites telling me I would have to sign up again or something.

I am gonna do it sometime today, it has been ready for over a week but I haven't done it yet. I need to look at my mails and see if I need to save stuff, or forward mails from my att mail to a hotmail or google mail to save. Then I guess I will be ready.

probably wise to fwd on e-mails from your att account unless they are saved onto your computer because you downloaded them through Outlook or some other e-mail programme. Did you only ever read your mails online or did you use an e-mail programme?

Well, I have a hotmail and some gmails, I have about a bigazilbillion gmails to give away if anybody wants.

But on my att outlook express, I know I will lose those mails, or assume I will. But I just went to look and , as per usual, I can't even get in there to look and see if I need to save some.

Did I mention that AT&T sux big donkey dicks?

I call it like I see it. My state is really big on deregulation of phone companies and giving all phone companies a chance, to increase competition and lower prices. But AT&T, who intends to take over the world BTW, merely bought up most of the smaller companies, and get this, they freakin pay Verizon not to provide service to my area, that is why I had to get Earthlink which takes a long time to get set up.

I intend to never do business with them again, which is really hard since I told them to cancel my account, which they won't do. So I don't pay them, and the idiots actually said to not worry about it that they would just deduct the money from my credit card. So when they sent me another letter saying they had forgotten to get my credit card number and please send it to them I didn't do it. Apparently they still haven't figured it out, and I am still getting thier service, which I don't want, but since Earthlink is ready, and I feel kinda guilty because I have no intention of ever payining AT&T, I figue I will go ahead and hook up the Earthlink.

if you have all your e-mails on Outlook Express then you'll be safe, as long as you're keeping your computer.

Non AT&T e-mails (gmail, hotmail etc...) will remain unchanged.

You will get a new e-mail address though and an AT&T address won't work any more. Make sure you notify everyone of a new address. Oh, and for sake of ease in the future - stick with gmail accounts, at least those won;t change every time you change your ISP.

I keep trying to get away from AT&T but they keep buying the providers I'm using. I was a long time Cingular customer but now I'm an AT&T customer again.

I'm just wondering when AT&T will buy out Comcast.

I hooked up my new stuffs, my computer said "Bingo, new network discovered" but it took a long time cause that fucker installer just had a chopped off end of wire there, he sux big dead donkey dicks also.

Anyways, I had to get out my trusty lil swiss army knife with 101 attachments including a toothpick. I snipped the wires and played around with them. I looked at my other wiring thingie, and natually they was all different colors, but I guess I got it right cause here I am.

But my phone is making all kinds of wierd noises, maybe I need to change the filters to the new ones, but I thought they were all the same.

Lisa, what will happen with the new ISP is that your PC will have a different IP address on the internet than it used to.

Most home PC's have dynamic IP addresses, which means that the ISP is at liberty to assign your PC a different IP address whenever it wants or needs to (typically this happens whenever they upgrade their systems and need to disconnect you for a while -- when you reconnect your PC will end up with a different IP address).

So obviously, changing your ISP guarantees that your IP address will change.

Some sites that need to maintain a very high level of security (like online banks) use your IP address as part of their validation process, so you may find that you'll need to re-authenticate with them.

Literotica uses your PC's IP address to guard against multiple-voting on stories, so you'll be able to one-bomb all the stories you hate all over again

That's not exactly true. If you are on dial-up your IP address is different each time you dial in. So most places don't use your IP address as there would/will be inconsistencies in the address. Even with Broadband the Dynamic IP can and does change on a frequent basis. Every time your cable modem or DSL modem reboot or have a hiccup your IP address is most likely to change.

Yes but I done it ...... well, untill they buy Earthlink.

I do have a problem, My bit torrent client "Utorrent" is no longer connectable, and the instructions to forward a port include setting up a static ip address.

After careful review of the instructions, several times, I have come to the conclusion that if I try to do that a hard crash is probably the best thing that will happen.

I am trying to download William Shatners "Tekwar" series, and at 10K it will probably take several weeks, or months (its a 9 gig file) does anyone know a way to forward a port with a Zyxel router for idiots to do?
