To My Twenties
How lucky that I ran into you
When everything was possible
For my legs and arms, and with hope in my heart
And so happy to see any woman—
O woman! O my twentieth year!
Basking in you, you
Oasis from both growing and decay
Fantastic unheard of nine- or ten-year oasis
A palm tree, hey! And then another
And another—and water!
I'm still very impressed by you. Whither,
Midst falling decades, have you gone? Oh in what lucky fellow,
Unsure of himself, upset, and unemployable
For the moment in any case, do you live now?
From my window I drop a nickel
By mistake. With
You I race down to get it
But I find there on
The street instead, a good friend,
X----- N-----, who says to me
Kenneth do you have a minute?
And I say yes! I am in my twenties!
I have plenty of time! In you I marry,
In you I first go to France; I make my best friends
In you, and a few enemies. I
Write a lot and am living all the time
And thinking about living. I loved to frequent you
After my teens and before my thirties.
You three together in a bar
I always preferred you because you were midmost
Most lustrous apparently strongest
Although now that I look back on you
What part have you played?
You never, ever, were stingy.
What you gave me you gave whole
But as for telling
Me how best to use it
You weren't a genius at that.
Twenties, my soul
Is yours for the asking
You know that, if you ever come back.
—Kenneth Koch

Ah the impatience of youth... just because we haven't responded doesn't mean we haven't read. I'm just trying to figure out who is lamenting turning thirty, surely it can't be you (though I have caught a few other references to aging in some of your other posts). But maybe we haven't quite gotten the import?SylphOne said:well i'd like to put up a new pic tonight....but i'm disappointed not one person even tried to read my poem i posted..........![]()
perhaps i will just keep waiting till i get some response, course that might mean no more pics for a very long time.....![]()

SylphOne said:Alright...another 'present' for those who actually attempted my poem![]()
Ah, so someone close to you (a friend perhaps) is turning 30 soon.... Tell them there is life after 30! Now, with all these ribbons and bows and talk of birthdays, surely some unwrapping is in order?SylphOne said:Alright...another 'present' for those who actually attempted my poem![]()
i would say u pretty much got it right...i mean everyone interprets things differently, that is the beauty of the written wordbearlee said:Geez, gotta come out of lurking mode here. I read it. I'm not really a poetry kinda guy so I have problems understanding stuff sometimes but I understand, unless of course I'm so far off base it doesn't matter-age is number that really doesn't matter except as you get older you don't tend to want to go back. Each day is the beginning of a new life, uncharted of course and you make decisions today which are really based on the unknown but you get to make the decision again tomorrow with the benefit of the experience of the day before. So based on that experience, you'll continue on the new course or change it a little or simply abandon it, but it doesn't matter because the new journey starts fresh each day. I have something I should give you to read-but then again, maybe I didn't understand it in which case-forget everything I just wrote. If I hit somewhat-nice job, Sylph![]()

i see it as the lose of youth..the lament of carfree life and the passion for everything as a new adult. The realization that although those things were wonderous at the time the individual gained little from them in comparison to the wisdom of age. That the 'beauty' of youth is the price for the peace of age and wisdom. That one has to experience the beauty of youth in order to gain the wisdom,![]()
but who knows i could be way off base too.....
anyway it spoke to mainly because as cyberguy guessed the Big 30 is approaching rapidly for me this week![]()
as for the extra present for all that analysis.....just give me a moment![]()
