a friend of mine is getting a tattoo on friday and she's a little worried she wont be able to get it done, so i told her i would ask around if its possible.

She's my age, 23, and when she was a kid - she had a small pot of boiling water spilled on her back. it didnt get her to bad, i mean it could have been a lot worse. it actually looks like just a really bad sunburn that never went away.
she's wanting to get the tattoo on her back <where the scaring is, and is worried that it wont turn out right. the tattoo shop we're going to is amazing, its one of the best in a 200mile radius - so i know that it will look great.

give me your thoughts on if it can or cannot be done on light scarring.
thanks

I think the only thing that would cause any problems is scar tissue, and from what you've said, there seems to be little or no scar tissue, so she should be fine.

A good tattoo artist will tell her if it's not a good idea to get it done on the scarred area. So, she should ask her artist whether it's advisable to get tattooed there, or if she'd be better off having a different area done.

Has she talked to the artist in advance about her concerns, and if anyone at the shop has experience with her type of skin? If not, that should probably be her first step.

I agree with Erika...your friend should talk to the artist before getting her work done. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have her talk to them no matter what so she can get an idea of pricing and time involved as well. Too many people just walk in to a shop and pick something off the wall without doing any research and then dont like what they got. :)

Your friend should speak to the artist beforehand in any case, to get to know him, to find out her techniques and to ask any questions. It often depends on the severity of the scar and how recent it is.

Here's a link where someone asked a very similar question and the answer.

Yup, if the shop is good, they will know the yays and nays of what is safe with existing conditions and marks on people's skin. I know the place I go to has no issue with covering birthmarks, but if the skin is sensitive or could have any reaction to the ink, they'll suggest a different alternative, a new location to put it, or if that still doesn't work, they'll tell you that it simply can't be done.

Before the tattoo starts, the artist will most likely take a few minutes to talk about what she wants, where its going, and help her set it up perfectly. After all, its there forever- theres no erase & start over!

If the shop's as good as you say, they should be fine with helping her. Bring her over a bit early, let them chat and see the mark in question- that way she has time to think it over before doing it and let them plot out what they can do for the tattoo.

Hope she can get her ink done without any problems! I love mine!

ASG,

I hope you let us know how it went for her. I've had a few of my scars tattooed over, and there were little to no problems. There can potentially be a healing aspect however.

Please let us (well me anyway) know how it goes!

well her appointment for the tattoo was today at noon, but we went in last night around 6pm and was looking around asking questions n such. She found a design that was pre drawn and was exactly what she was looking for. We went into the back booth with her artist and she showed him the scar and he even said it wasnt gonna be a problem, but had the owner/main tattooist go in and check it out also and h e even said there shouldnt be a problem. Instead of having us go back today at noon like we were suppose to, he decided to just do it last night, while his boss was there.. He took his time on it so it turned out good, so a 2 hour tattoo turned into a 4 1/2 hour session lol but it looks awesome. When i get my camera back i will post pictures. She said it didnt hurt over the scars at all, just over the spine. needle on bone cant feel good lol

Thanks ladies n gents for the tips.

The skin over my scars has no feeling, so that probably helps. I'm happy to read that she had a great expirience. Good for her.
