The other possibility was "strength" or the phrase "seek perfection of character". The phrase though is long and would not fit in the wrist area. I prefer to go with a single character on the inside wrist. Small and elegant is what I'm going for, and most likely a sngle color of all black.
Elegance on the inside wrist.

Whatever Kanji you choose, It will definatly be elegant on the inside of your wrist, *looking at my wrist, thinking*

Yup, inside wrist, good placement choice.

i have a dragon on my right shoulder. It was my design and the artist tweeked it after i brought him the drawing and i love it.

Is that the BDSM symbol in the dragon's tale?

I have found tattoos on certain people to be so incredibly beautiful that I have often fantasised about having my very own. But after visualing myself in a nursing home and being bathed/bandaged/etc by a 16 yr old (snickering at the marijuana leaf on my breast that I got whilst 16 coz I thought that was way cool at the time) bothers me somewhat.

Hence I am a tattoo virgin.

So don't get a weed leaf. Duh.

I love Kelis back tat of flowers http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/images/tattoo/kelistattoos.jpg
and I really want a panther, plus I have a tat to cover on my back of a cross, so I'll combine it all and have my pather on a bed of flowers that trails down my back, I'd have callas and orchids as my large flowers, and Pride of Barbados as my small ones, I have a pretty good mock up of it so far, I just need to get the cash :) and then wait til I go visit NY.

Damn, THAT'S what Nas is hitting! Where'd you get that?

Here's a full size picture of my av. It is based on an Aztec drawing I liked, but changed from a generic lizard to a chameleon:

I think it is important that anything you permanently put on your body should have many meanings, and be something you appreciate on many levels. I chose to get a design in the Aztec style because I tend to prefer simple art with bold colors.

I chose a chameleon because I can be somewhat of a shapeshifter. Although I try to maintain a strong sense of self, I have lived in many different places and many different situations and try to flourish in whatever environment I'm placed in. I am naturally gifted in this regard as I look very racially ambiguous and adopt accents easily.

I also go through major changes in mood, on one end of the spectrum being ultraconfident, extroverted and good-natured and on the other end being very introverted, paranoid, secluded and sometimes violent. Because of these many facets of my personality and behavior, people often get vastly differing impressions of me and it is only the VERY few people who know me very well that can see through the epidermis.

I also think that ink should have meaning that will last the ages. I like your tat and your rationale is neat, Marquis.

I have a palm-sized hamsa in the center of my upper back, below the nape. This is a schematic of a hand with an eye in the palm, and it's an amulet against the evil eye in semitic cultures. My hamsa also has a chai in the center above the eye. This is an irony- Jewish law forbids tattooing, yet I decided to get one of my favorite Jewish folkloric/kabbalistic items. It's like having Hashem watching my back for me.

I am thinking about adding some other items, lately, possibly a tree of life or another kabbalistic schematic.

I've also thought about tattooing Netzach in hebrew on one upper arm, and Hod on the other. (Hod is the opposite but paired sefirot to Netzach, and it can be translated as "submission, glory, descending")

wicked girl that's wonderful, how long did it take you?

thank you, Hajar.
it took me about a year to do and ofcourse, im not done. ive been bitten by the ink illness...must have more.
it all started as a cover up for my ex's initials. the tatt guy said, hey that would look awesome going all the way up your thigh. told him to go for it. in every section of the tatt, there are things that are special to me. it all has meaning. the tatt in the middle of my back is actually the bdsm symbol but heavily decorated.

I think the no tattoo rule depends on what tribe of Jew you descend from if I'm not mistaken. You would know better than I.

my Master took me to get my first tattoo last night. It's His ownership mark, a padlock with the initial of His first name taking the place of a keyhole.

The nape of the neck has many bones ... ouch. It hurt like a bitch. He's a very sweet and compassionate Dom, held my hand during the entire time. There were a few moments where the pain brought tears to my eyes, He did ask a few times if i needed a break. i declined the offer, i just knew it was better to keep going until the artist had finished the design. Besides, i couldn't wait for him to complete the work so i could see the tattoo.

i love it! i'm very proud to display it.

We have some beautiful tatts on this board.....almost makes me get past my own issues with having them on my own body, but not quite....though I also think it would depend on size and purpose as well. I agree with those who prefer there to be a clear meaning behind the tattoo. For me I have already reached a point where I could be able to accept it without too much mental difficulty if it were a clear symbol of ownership as opposed to something designed to look beautiful with no meaning. I love the beautiful to look at on others, but for me I know it interferes with my feeling of nakedness (as in if it were large I would never feel naked again), and my knowledge I would over time become tired of seeing the same picture on my body year in year out unless it had a deeper meaning. I keep thinking on it, but still have a long way to go psychologically. LOL, of course I could happily find and design tattoos for others, and enjoy the final beauty of it on their bod.

Tattoos...just the thought of them brings to mind the sound of the machine as the artist adjusts the power...*sighs*

I've 10 tats Myself, 7 of which are professional:

1) Wolf paws turning into human footprints, right calf. This tattoo was done by Dick Everest of Everett Tattoo Emporium, in memory of a late friend of MIne who passed from this earhtly plane in 1999. She had a thing for wolves, and eyes that matched.

2) Haida wolf, outside of right forearm. This tattoo was done by Spike at Mothership Connection. I saw the design on a greeting card in Port Townsend and fell in love with it. A friend has the matching tattoo, but her skin kept rejecting the ink. Fat? Destiny? *shrugs* Who knows?

3) The Beast from Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical, right biceps. This was done at the now-defunct Pink Zone on Capitol Hill. Instead of the red rose, I opted too have a purple one instead. Many people don't know what to make of it, until I tell them what it is. Their first response is: "The Devil?"

4) Gold and Silver Yin Yang, left biceps. This was done by Mike at Painless Steel. 3 of My friends and I decided to get matching tattoos, but couldn't decide on a design. So, in a flash of insight, We all had Our Birth Signs tattooed on Us. I'm a Cancer...the symbol of Cancer is 69...a yin yang is a form of 69....Ta Da!!!

5) Custom-made design of Pikachu, inside of left forearm. This was done at Lynnwood Tattoo, a place I will never go again. I took 3 trading cards in, and had the artist combine 3 qualities into one tattoo. He carved into Me, and did a crappy job at filling in the body. However, whenever I look at it, it reminds Me of My godchildren, and their desire for Me to have a tattoo that would remind Me of them.

6) Trible rose, purple petals, green stem, right pec. This was done at Lynnwood Tattoo, before #5. I got this in memory of My first Dominant, and because I like tribal work and purple roses.

7) 8-inch tall Lycan, outside of left lower leg, all grayshade. This was done by Ryan at Painless Steel. I had been wanting the design for years, and have always put it off until "the right time." Well, the day came that felt like the right time, and like I had earned it. After serious consultation with a couple of My friends, I decided that this would be My newest tattoo. The Lycan is on 2 legs, and is holding the rope that leads to a grappling hook. As one friend told Me: "You always did take the path of least resistance when encountering a wall someone puts up in front of You." Wall? What wall? There's supposed to be walls?

I have 3, I want more, and threads like this are dangerous because it really makes me get the "itch".

I'm thinking of having "Believe" scripted below my phoenix/moon scene on my back. The word has very personal (non-religious) meaning to it for me. I also want to get the stars and moon and clouds touched up in Chameleon ink.

I'm right there with you! I have two and am getting a third once our income taxes are done and we get our refund check. Tofu simply LOVES tattoos on me. I have two on each side of my spine inbetween my shoulder blades. I'll attach a picture. I have so many more planned after the third one, which will be going in the middle of my back. *shudders at the thought of the tattoo needle going over her spine* But after going through natural child birth, I think I can handle that. LOL

Please subtract about 30 lbs from that figure, hehe, I've lost weight since then. Any way, the one on the right is a triple goddess symbol and the one on the left is a god symbol. They mean so much more to me than just spiritual/religious symbols. It's my way of saying to the world that I'm not just one or the other when it comes to questions of gender. I'm a balance of both in spirit. It's hard for me to explain to people sometimes, but then again I never got the tattoos for anyone else but myself.

The third tattoo I'll be getting will be an Om symbol inside of a lotus flower. It'll be much bigger than the other two and I've been waiting three years now to get it (I got pregnant and had to wait..hehe). I agree with the other poster's suggestion of waiting a year. That's my general rule too. If the desire is still there after all this time, then I know I won't mind having it permanently etched into my skin. There will be more tatts to follow the next one. One on my lower back to symbolize my son, another on my upper right thigh to symbolize fire and my strong desire and will to persevere even through dark times.

I'm still hashing out the last two, but the other is ready to go. Just need the money and the right artist. :) One more bonus to my tattoos, they make me feel pretty. I'm extremely fair skinned, and there's just this awesome sense of beauty in the way the black ink contrasts against my skin. :) Tattoos can be so sexy if they're done tastefully and properly. :)

Like I said, after natural childbirth, I think I'll be able to handle it. lol My other tattoos tickled a little. :)
