I recently [about three hours ago] got a tattoo on my bum. I was a little groggy, though, when the artist was telling me how to care for it while it's healing [cleaning, dressings, etc] so if anyone could give me the basics I'd be very appreciative.

Love,
Precious Enchantment.

I tried that, but the shop is closed for the night and Lit is my ultimate source for all sorts of information so I thought I'd try here. :)

There's an excellent tattoo & piercing shop near me, and this is from their website: aftercare. The tattoo aftercare info is at the top of the page, and the rest of the page deals with piercings.

Hope this is helpful - happy healing!

Take the covering off it, gently wash it with antibacterial soap and pat dry. If the tattooist has given you some cream to put on it do so. Don't cover it with a dressing and wear loose clothing. It may be a little tender for a few days.

For the next couple of weeks wash it in the shower with the antibacterial soap (liquid soap is best) and put the cream on it twice a day. I did this with both my tattoos and they healed with no problems. It may itch a bit during the healing process but NO SCRATCHING!!! :)

Go with what your artist recomends....trust me, dont take anyone elses advice.

1.A few hours after that actual tatooing it should be washed gently with soap and water.

2. A non-oil based ointment should be applied for 2-3 weeks. Do not use anything greasy as it will marr the colors and not allow the wound to breathe.

3. Avoid prolonged soaking (no swimming/long bathing) and direct sunlight for 2-3 weeks. Solariums and sun bathing are NOT a good thing.

4. Don't pick the scab!!!!!!!!

5. Post pics :p

Here's what my tattooist told me:

1. 8 hours after first getting the tattoo, take the bandage off, wash with soap and water, and apply bacitracin (blotting off the excess).

2. Do NOT bandage it up again.

3. Wash and re-apply bacitracin twice daily (blotting off the excess) for approximately two weeks there after.

4. If infection sets in, see your doctor... IMMEDIATELY!

...It worked great for all of my tats.

Thanks for your advice, guys! I've washed it and am sitting around in a thong so it can air out [despite the freezing cold, omg. lol.

I've attached a photo of it.. it's still kinda puffy, so when it's healed I'll post a less-close-up one. :D Thanks again!

I have another one, but the tattooist who did it didn't give me ANY instructions so I didn't know to look after it at all and it ended up looking rather bad.

Thankfully the artist who did that today was happy to fix my other one for FREE. The whole time they were muttering about incompetant artists who should have their licenses removed, too.. it was kinda funny.
