Tattoo Advice

Serijules: Thank you so much for going into so much detail, and sharing the stories behind each piece that you have. You have kind of hit the nail on the head, in the sense that I want my tattoo to be something that I can tell a story about too. Something I can explain with pride what it means, and why I got it.

Etoile: Thanks for the input.. I do have a few shops in mind, and am already conscious of the fact that I want to make sure I pay for someone who does a good job. Price should be less of an issue if you are stuck with something for life.


Your Captor: I love the analogy of what to think of tattoos as. To me, it has to matter alot before I get one, it could be years before my search for what I want is over.

Lilith: Thanks for chipping in. Oh, and I am sure that the guys who don't see the beauty in the weed, are guys not worth bothering with.

Fury Dragons do look good.. I doubt I would make them look good though if they were tattoo'd on me somewhere! lol.

Squeaky I can agree with you there too, as I want somewhere where I can enjoy the sight of it too, although when I think about it, I doubt the tat I would get would be hugely detailed, just something important to me.

Jade: Hello Jade I doubt I will be so impulsive about getting them, if I ever manage it! All I do know is I don't think I have any ability to be able to design the tattoo, but hopefully I can find one that I am happy with.

Well after reading alot of what people have said so far, I have decided a couple of things... I quite like the idea of the tattoo being on the inside of my lower arm, somewhere where I can see it easily, and somewhere that wont be affected by my change in weight etc.. lol...
As for what to get... I have thought alot about things that mean something to me. I initially thought my star sign, but I realised that astrology is not something I know alot about, or spend a lot of time thinking about etc. The main idea that came into my head was music, as that is something I am incredibly passionate about. In fact, music is something I could not live without, but from there I could not think of what to actually have as the tattoo. I thought about notation symbols and notes etc, but I doubt I would be happy with something like that.
Oh well, the search continues....

I have three tattoos, two on my upper arms just below the shoulder and one on my lower back. I was browsing a symbol site about 5 years ago and came across a star within a circle, kind of like a curved cog wheel. I discovered it was an African symbol meaning "life transformation" - perfect, seeing that I'd just left my husband and was starting out on a new life path. That is the one on my back - I cannot see it, but it seemed right to place it there, to guide me along on my journey

The second one is a tribal heart, on my left arm. I was in the middle of a new relationship much of which was conducted online. I thought we would have a life together eventually but not to be. However he was present for both of those tatts when they were inked on me, and it's a reminder of a time in my life when I was actively exploring my sexuality. So no regrets with that one

The third, is a tribal Kiwi, on my right arm. This was inked on me last year, and represents my NZ birthplace. I thought about getting some Maori tattoos but as I have no Maori blood I thought that might be disrespectful so this is the next best thing - I may add the silver fern somewhere later on

At 49 I still want to get some more ink - maybe some scrollwork under the one on my back, or something else mid upper back - yes I will know it when I see it

An instrument, a laud speaker, a conductor, your favorite melody (as in sheet music), elements from album covers, a record player, the name of a genre, etc, etc. Most likely what you want is in plain sight.

My best friend is a musician, but also a really FEMININE person... she loves flowers and vines and all that... so I designed her a Treble Clef made of a winding vine, with small leaves and blossoms on it.

It's her next ink.


She's also hoping to get one of my designs over her back.. and already has one on the inside of her ankle.

when you see someone with a beautiful work on them-don't be afraid to ask them who their artist was-recommendations are always best-and most people will be happy to recommend someone who does good work. go in and see the artist and discuss what you think you want-anyone concerned with their reputation will be happy to talk it all through with you
just be warned-tattoos are addictive-once you have one you'll want more!! i have a serious serious craving for some new ink-just in the same place as you trying to work out what and where

No no, I like it fine! But it is an integrated part of my body. The design cannot stand alone, it must be on my body. It is based on a 1924 Man Ray photograph.

The body becomes like a cello, violin, or similar instrument. (The shapes are identical, but I was turned to one side for the photograph so there is some stretching.)

He he, I suppose a sound hole like on a guitar would not have been to appealing.

I remember when my high school music teacher told me why the guitar was shaped the way it was, good times, especially with the skirt loving Goth chick right next to me.

By integral, I think Maude meant things that one thinks they need, as opposed to what they get. Or something like that.

Her example was that she believes in collecting things as opposed to owning them.

I thought it applied here, because the really good tattoos are the ones with some kind of meaning behind them derived from life experiences, as opposed to something somebody gets because it looks “cool”, or because its popular.

I like your tattoo, thats a great idea, not to mention how beautiful you look with it, or even without it for that matter.

I saw one on tv the other that a guy got done when he was wasted somewhere, it is a picture of his friend on his left butt cheek! Quite funny, but not the reason I would want to get one done! lol
