On a warm summers day with hardly a cloud in the sky, the taxi, one among many, inched its way out of an airport. The road was bumper to bumper, car horns blaring and people swearing, as everyone rushed hither and thither engrossed in their own little worlds.

Sitting inside the cab was a woman. A woman, who seemed singularly uninterested in the world around her. She was sitting sprawled across the back two seats, one converse clad foot resting on the floor the other across her knee.

The taxi driver had been surprised and not at all sure how to react when she hadn't answered his request to put her seat belt on. Not wanting to make a scene or lose a customer, he eventually settled on amused indifference. That is of course until he pulled out into the gridlock, where he honked and swore with the rest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The woman glanced out the window as the cab pulled to a stop for the final time, parked outside a tall sleek building of contrasting concrete and glass. The name plaque over the door was only just visible through the serpentine gloom.
The driver cleared his throat nervously, unnerved by his passenger's complete silence throughout their journey. "Dorm eleven, miss" he said softly.
Her gaze shifted back into the cab and there was a slight pause before she sat up and pulled a wallet from the back pocket of her jeans. She handed him the fare and stepped wordlessly onto the sidewalk which winds its way across the lawn towards dorm eleven.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Following her out of the cab to help with her bags, the driver was taken aback to find that she was already walking down the path. A little annoyed, he opened the trunk and was bemused to find, well, nothing.

'What kind of person goes of to college without even a suitcase?' he wondered to himself as got back into his cab.

'Her parents must have already shipped everything ahead of her,' he thought as he pulled away from the curb, 'to make traveling easier. Yes, that would be it.'

'All the same,' he mused as he sped down the highway back towards the airport, 'she was an odd one that, dressed all in black and wearing a funny sort of necklace. In fact, if I didn't know better I would have said it looked like a dog collar.' He let out a great sigh. 'Kids and their fashion, these days,' but before he could ponder any further he found himself back at the airport, where he had to concentrate on weaving, honking, and swearing his way towards his next passenger.

When the woman in black had ascended two flights of stairs, dodged past a pair of guys struggling to force a sofa into their room, and opened the door to room 315, she was surprised to find it empty.

Room 315 like all the rooms in the building was small, but functional. There were two beds, two small desks and chairs, along with a door on the left leading to a bathroom shared between four. A window, facing south, was set into the wall to the right of the door.

Putting in her earbuds, she lay down on the bed underneath the window, wondering, without real interest, where and more importantly who her new roommate was.

Luke smiled as he pulled up to the dorm with his truck, only a few bags and a fridge. His roommate had told him that he just needed a fridge. He still didn't know who the person was. As he got out and looked up at the building, he realized how different it would be to live here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke had come here to get away from the small town he was from. He was 6'4" and stood out like a sore thumb, being the tallest guy in his school of 500 kids. After sophomore year, he was ready to leave. Too many rumors flew around about how the girl he loved screwed him over. Too many rumors about his family. He was just happy to be away.
The 10 hour drive had been extremely uneventful, but it gave time for Luke to think. He had plugged his iPod in and hit the road, eating the pavement slowly. He wondered who his roommate was. He had heard this college had coed dorms, and was hoping it wouldn't be that big of a deal. He had always been shy around girls, so hoped he and his roommate could get along so he wouldn't have to deal with them alone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Luke grabbed a trolley to load his stuff up, then carted it to the elevator, punching the number 3 button. He was happy he had remembered his iPod and earbuds, because elevator music always annoyed him. As the elevator dinged and the doors opened, he carted his stuff to room 315 then unlocked the door.

The first thing he saw was the girl laying on the bed. He wondered if that was his roommate's girlfriend. He didn't pay her any mind, and started to unload his stuff on the other side of the room, then took the cart back and went to park his truck.

When Luke got back to his room, the girl was still there, so he decided to lay on his bed and watch a movie on his laptop. He turned on a movie and put his earbuds in, relaxing in his dorm room.

Blinking blearily, the woman opened her eyes and pulled out her phone to check the time. She was surprised to see that it was almost ten PM. The flight must have tired her out more than she thought. Well not that surprising, it had been her first after all. Though she hated to admit it, even to herself, she had been terrified and probably subconsciously dreading it for weeks. She reasoned the relief mingled with fading adrenaline must have been what knocked her out.

She sat up and stretched, arching her back and pressing her shoulder blades together after pulling out her earbuds. It was only now that she could hear someone else breathing in the room. Whirling around, she half fell half rolled off her bed into a crouch. Her hand was halfway towards her pocket before she really took in the sight of the intruder.

He was lounging on the bed perpendicular to hers, a computer on his lap, looking startled and wary as he pulled out his own earbuds. 'Who wouldn't, you idiot? He just found out he has a psycho for a room mate,' a snide, cold voice said inside her head. Giving herself a mental shake, she stood up, trying to make it look as though she had fallen getting off the bed.

Her long lustrous dark hair, which usually fell perfectly straight to the middle of her back, stuck out at odd angles after sleeping on it and gave her a slightly deranged appearance. She stood at a flat 5'6" and could tell from Luke's long lanky form that he would dwarf her, being at least six feet and well muscled. She on the other hand was very thin, not unhealthily so, but only just. Her breasts though small, strained against her tight, plain black T-shirt, seeming larger than they were, offset by her petite frame. In the dimly lit room, her pale skin seemed to glow against the shadows.

"Hello," she said her bright, light blue eyes finding his, "I'm Alex."

Luke stayed silent for a minute, computing the name. 'Alex....How do I know that name?' he thought. Finally it dawned on him. Alex was his roommate's name.

"You're Alex? Does that mean you're my roommate?," Luke asked, surprised. He had heard that the college had coed rooms, but didn't think he would have gotten one. That must have been because he just clicked a random room assignment.

Luke set his laptop down, then hopped down from his bed, stretching and realizing how short Alex was. His immediate thought was that she was a very attractive girl, but he quickly put that thought aside. He wasn't looking for anything.

"Hi," he said shyly, then extended his hand timidly. Even though Luke was 6'4" and a well muscled 190 pounds, he was still terrified by women due to high school. He smiled as she took his hand, feeling how warm and soft it was, contrasting her darker personality. He noticed her blue eyes and smiled, hoping his dark browns seemed warm.

"You're Alex? Does that mean you're my roommate?"

Alex managed, with great difficulty, to not roll her eyes at the question. Instead she gave a small slightly wry smile and nodded. Part of her watched appreciatively as he stood and stretched, noticing that he was even taller than she had thought.

"Hi,"

Realizing how nervous he was, she tried to put on a facade of warmth as she took his hand, giving him what she hoped was a more genuine smile. She was used to people being nervous around her and could tell at once that Luke wasn't reacting to her; he was simply shy.

Releasing his hand, Alex sat cross-legged on the spinning office chair behind her, leaning forward and resting her chin in her hand. Wanting to put him at ease, she decided to make an attempt at small talk, something she usually had little patience for.

"How was your flight?" she asked curious to know if he had flown or if he was a local.

"I actually drove 10 hours. I wanted to have a vehicle while I was here," Luke said quietly. He didn't really like small talk with a girl, especially one he thought was attractive. Ok, maybe like wasn't the right word. He got really nervous when he was talking to a girl.

Luke sat down across from her, and tried not to stare, but failed miserably. He couldn't help himself with her figure and especially her eyes. He knew she had flown to get here from the emails she sent him.

"Were you expecting to be roomed with a guy?" Luke asked, then realized the stupidity of the question.

"Sorry. That was a pointless question. I guess I should just ask if there is anything you want to know about me that you don't already, or if you even want to talk," he said, fidgeting with his earbuds.

'So he has a car. That's a pleasant surprise; not many freshmen do.' Pleased that she wouldn't be stuck on campus, Alex was too preoccupied with the possibilities having a car would present to notice that Luke was getting more, not less nervous as they continued talking.

"Were you expecting to be roomed with a guy? Sorry. That was a pointless question. I guess I should just ask if there is anything you want to know about me that you don't already, or if you even want to talk."

Now that it was quite apparent her plan was backfiring, she was unsure what to do. She decided to give him some time. Maybe try again in the morning.

"You know I - am - pretty tired," Alex said truthfully, not needing to fake the yawn the interrupted her, "Would you mind if we talk later?"

Luke smiled, then hid his sigh with a yawn of his own, just as tired as Alex.

"That sounds good. I'll talk to you in the morning," Luke said. He peeled off his shirt and dropped his shorts, then pulled a pair of gym shorts on without remembering Alex was in the room. He hopped up into his bed then looked back at Alex, who seemed a little shocked.

Luke decided to lighten the mood with a little joke. "If you get scared or lonely, I'm right here," he said quietly, just loud enough for her to hear, then nervously laughed as he realized Alex could actually crawl into his bed.

Luke rolled over onto his side, and tried to go to sleep.

Alex stared at him for several seconds. If her chin had not been resting in her hand she was quite sure her mouth would have been hanging open. 'He can't be serious, can he?' she wondered, 'he had been so shy... No, he must have been joking. A normal person can't change that quickly... can they?'

'Maybe that's because he's not normal. Maybe that's why you were assigned to each other; you're both crazy,' retorted the snide voice. Not deigning to respond, Alex stood up and pulled off her shirt, jeans, and shoes, hanging the clothes on the back of the chair before lying down on her bed in a black bra and panties.

She lay chest down on top of the covers, with her right arm curled underneath the pillow, raising her head slightly and turning it towards the doors and with her left forearm resting on the bed beside her face. Despite her earlier nap, Alex was asleep almost before she closed her eyes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alex woke the next morning to the sound of an alarm clock in the room below them. She lay in bed for a few minutes, in near total darkness: there was no light coming in through the window. Getting out of bed quietly so as not to disturb Luke, she fished her phone out of her jeans pocket and was not altogether surprised to see that it was just after four in the morning.
Knowing that she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep, Alex tiptoed across the room and into the shared bathroom discarding her remaining clothes as she went. Not bothering to lock the doors, she turned on the shower and stepped under the soothingly warm water.
Luke rolled over as he heard the shower turn on. He hadn't been able to sleep, and had heard Alex tossing and turning throughout the night. She settled down, then the damn alarm clock had to go off. Luke checked his phone, realizing it was a quarter after 4. He pulled his laptop out and then hooked his projector up.
Luke turned on a movie, set the volume low as Alex got up and went to take a shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Breakfast was a rushed affair, as Luke was rushing to get to his classes on time. He saw that Alex was getting ready as well.

"8:00AM class as well?" he asked, getting a nod in response.

"Text me your number, so we can meet up for lunch or something," Luke said, writing his cell number down and sliding it over to her.

Throughout the day they texted, trying to keep things light. Luke was still shy, even through texts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As classes came to an end, Luke met up with Alex at the dining hall they both selected. They didn't really talk, both tired from the day.
Luke got back to the room and started doing his homework.
"Pick a movie and plug the projector in," he said, busy completing the routine homework he had to do.
The day was desperately dull for Alex, sitting in class after class of teachers droning on about things any self respecting student must surely already know. She didn't even bother to listen to most of it and there certainly wasn't anything worth taking notes on. She sat in the back of every lecture hall and class room, occasionally responding to some pointless text from Luke, but mostly staring out a window or around the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When the torture was finally ended, she met Luke at one of the dinning halls. He was even quieter than usual as they ate, but Alex decided to let him keep his silence. He would talk when he was ready or he wouldn't. Trying to force the issue was not likely to help anything.

After they had finished, they made their way back to the dorm building. Along the way, Alex wondered what Luke was studying. She hadn't seen him in any of her classes, but at a school this large that meant next to nothing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arriving back at room 315, Luke unlocked the door and sat down at his desk.
"Pick a movie and plug the projector in..."
Leaning against the doorframe, Alex replied, "I actually have some things I need to take care of, off campus." She watched him carefully to judge his reaction. "Would you mind giving me a lift?" Noticing he was already taking out his books, she added, "I can help you get through all your work, if it gets late."
"I actually have some things I need to take care of, off campus."
Luke sat there, digesting the words. He didn't know a whole lot about what Alex did, but he figured that what she did was her own business.
"Would you mind giving me a lift?"
"Sure. If you want to get your stuff, we can head over to my truck," he said smiling. He was finally relaxing around her. He set his books down and grabbed his keys.
"I can help you get through all your work, if it gets late."
He smiled and shook his head before he headed for the door. He smiled and then waited as she got her stuff.
"I most likely won't need help, but don't worry about it," he said as they started to walk towards his truck. He hoped she wouldn't mind his truck. Being from a rural area and growing up on a family farm, his truck was a big diesel affair. He just shrugged and then kept walking.
"Is it ok for me to ask what all you need to take care of?" he asked, hoping he wasn't being rude, or prying. He didn't want to get off on the wrong foot with her, since they would be living together for quite some time.
"Is it ok for me to ask what all you need to take care of?"
Alex snorted and opened the door to the stairwell at the end of the hall. "I should reply to that with 'yes' and leave it at that." Decending the stairs with the fingertips of one hand brushing the railing, she continued, "but I suppose I can answer what you should have asked."
Reaching the ground floor, she waited for Luke, holding the door open for him. "First of all, I obviously need to buy some clothes," she gestured vaguely at the clothes she had arrived in the night before, "and after that I have a package I need to pick up."
Alex stepped out into the balmy summer afternoon and smiled faintly. 'Is it always so warm here?' she wondered to herself, stopping and kneeling to tie her shoe. Standing and brushing her hair back from her face, she continued towards the parking lot. "We might want to get some food too."
"First of all, I obviously need to buy some clothes," she gestured vaguely at the clothes she had arrived in the night before, "and after that I have a package I need to pick up."
Luke smiled and nodded. He understood her need for clothes, since she hadn't brought anything to college with her. "Well, get as much as you need, since you'll have a truck at your disposal," he said with a smile.
He didn't know why, but he was smiling a lot more around her. He hoped it would stay like that, because he was honestly enjoying it. He felt like he could be more open and relaxed with her.
"We might want to get some food too."
Luke nodded as they arrived at the parking garage. As they came up to his truck, he immediately went to help Alex into the cab. Part of it was out of courtesy, while the other part was out of necessity. His truck had a pretty decent lift kit installed to handle larger tires and more rugged springs. It was the one thing he splurged on, and he loved off-roading and mudding.
He thought he caught Alex blushing as he softly took her hand, helping her to the step-up, then to the cab. He shut her door then went around to his side, hopping easily into the truck.
"So where are we going first?" he asked, turning the key and letting the diesel engine roar to life.
"Sorry if the truck is a little over the top. I grew up on a farm, even though my family never did anything. My truck is built to handle off-roading and towing," he said, smiling sheepishly as he shifted into reverse, backing out before putting it in drive and heading towards the exit.
He waited patiently for her answer, not really knowing where her package was, or where she wanted to go shopping. He started to think, and then wondered if he was going to be asked to help. Surprisingly, he was actually looking forward to shopping and spending time with his new roommate.
