Taming the Night ((Closed for Raiguy))
On a warm summers day with hardly a cloud in the sky, the taxi, one among many, inched its way out of an airport. The road was bumper to bumper, car horns blaring and people swearing, as everyone rushed hither and thither engrossed in their own little worlds.
Sitting inside the cab was a woman. A woman, who seemed singularly uninterested in the world around her. She was sitting sprawled across the back two seats, one converse clad foot resting on the floor the other across her knee.
The taxi driver had been surprised and not at all sure how to react when she hadn't answered his request to put her seat belt on. Not wanting to make a scene or lose a customer, he eventually settled on amused indifference. That is of course until he pulled out into the gridlock, where he honked and swore with the rest.
The woman glanced out the window as the cab pulled to a stop for the final time, parked outside a tall sleek building of contrasting concrete and glass. The name plaque over the door was only just visible through the serpentine gloom.
The driver cleared his throat nervously, unnerved by his passenger's complete silence throughout their journey. "Dorm eleven, miss" he said softly.
Her gaze shifted back into the cab and there was a slight pause before she sat up and pulled a wallet from the back pocket of her jeans. She handed him the fare and stepped wordlessly onto the sidewalk which winds its way across the lawn towards dorm eleven.
Following her out of the cab to help with her bags, the driver was taken aback to find that she was already walking down the path. A little annoyed, he opened the trunk and was bemused to find, well, nothing.
'What kind of person goes of to college without even a suitcase?' he wondered to himself as got back into his cab.
'Her parents must have already shipped everything ahead of her,' he thought as he pulled away from the curb, 'to make traveling easier. Yes, that would be it.'
'All the same,' he mused as he sped down the highway back towards the airport, 'she was an odd one that, dressed all in black and wearing a funny sort of necklace. In fact, if I didn't know better I would have said it looked like a dog collar.' He let out a great sigh. 'Kids and their fashion, these days,' but before he could ponder any further he found himself back at the airport, where he had to concentrate on weaving, honking, and swearing his way towards his next passenger.
When the woman in black had ascended two flights of stairs, dodged past a pair of guys struggling to force a sofa into their room, and opened the door to room 315, she was surprised to find it empty.
Room 315 like all the rooms in the building was small, but functional. There were two beds, two small desks and chairs, along with a door on the left leading to a bathroom shared between four. A window, facing south, was set into the wall to the right of the door.
Putting in her earbuds, she lay down on the bed underneath the window, wondering, without real interest, where and more importantly who her new roommate was.
