lol, um... I'll pass. But good to know, if only for future reference. ;)

Well heres something to think about for future reference...

2 + 2 = 4

How do we know this? Isn't this an underlying assumtion made by us being taught it in school?

Lets say this is a mistake and 2 plus 2 actually equals 5

So anywhere that we use this sum and get the answer 4 we are in fact making a mistake.

If this is true what else could we have made a mistake with?

well considering it was just a fiction novel I didn't feel the need to ask why...
also, I read it when I was 10 so I didn't really understand it.

A judge makes two statements to a condemned prisoner:

You will be hanged at noon one day next week, Monday through Friday.
The execution will be a surprise to you: you won't know the day of the hanging until the executioner knocks on your cell door at noon that day.
The prisoner reflects on these statements, and then smiles. "If the hanging were on Friday," he thinks, "then it wouldn't be a surprise; for I would know by Thursday night that I was going to be hanged on Friday, since no hanging had yet occurred and only one day was left. So the hanging can't be on Friday."

"But," he continues, "then the hanging can't be on Thursday either. If it were, then it wouldn't be a surprise either. For I would know on Wednesday night that I was going to be hanged on Thursday, since no hanging had yet occurred and only two days were left, one of which (Friday) I already know cannot be execution day. So a Thursday hanging is impossible too."

Similar reasoning shows that the hanging can't be on Wednesday, Tuesday, or even Monday! He returns to his cell confident in his safety: "I have been sentenced not just to a hanging, but to a surprising hanging and one that must occur next week; but no hanging meeting both conditions can be carried out."

The next week, the executioner knocks on his door at noon on Wednesday - an utter surprise. Everything the judge said has come true. Where is the flaw in the prisoner's reasoning?

OK....that made my head hurt LOL!
Hiya DrDav!

ItztheSecretMe

it is basic rational choice theory problem

if you can think of it so can someone else.

So if friday is the last day the hanging wont be a surprise. So if the prisioner thinks that so does the judge.

so then it must be monday to thursday...

but if thursday is the last logical day it wont be a surprise then, so it must be mon to wed

and so on

This is my point!

Infomation given

We do not why

Yet we accept

That's society's weakness, proving those who think for themselves are stronger, which is probably what leads us to the expression of "thought criminal".

As for the 2+2 thing, just count up for heavens sake!

Having said that, somethings get so complex, that we have to put our trust in others who are experts in their field. Otherwise, we wouldn't get anything done as we'd all have to try getting PhD's in every possible subject!

Just that sometimes the state can betray that :(

Wow this thread has taken a turn :p

How did this thread go from Dr Dav wanting someone to PM him to about how society is?

I've no idea, but just shows that amazing things happen when I'm around ;)

2 things everyone should do

1) ask yourself the difference between a stool and a table. Remenber you can sit on a table and eat off a stool.

2) write down a list of things you cannot doubt. That is that you cannot doubt at all, not "beyond reasonable dought"
