This afternoon a new patient came onto my unit.

She is a younger woman who is quite angry at the world. She is angry that she has been diagnosed with Cancer and she is angry that her self designed Homeopathic Treatment hasn't destroyed her Cancer.

She is also quite opinionated and she makes sure that any one who comes into her room quickly learns that she is/was a teacher of the German Language and European History. Her R.N. upon hearing this told her that she should get along well with me then because I'm a First Generation American of German decent.

When I walked into the room a short time later she greeted me in stilted heavily accented High German. (I still can't figure out what her accent was. It seemed like a mix of Austrian and Black Forest but I'm not sure.)

I replied in the idiom I grew up hearing and speaking and was promptly thrown out of her room with the admonishment not to return for any reason. She then demanded my Boss come to her room as she had a complaint.

My Boss came up to me later and explained her complaint which had me laughing. (Even my boss got a chuckle out of it.) Evidently I wasn't really of German decent. (At least according to her.) Her reasons were as follows:

I didn't have Blonde Hair or Blue Eyes.

A real German wouldn't have long hair or a beard.

I hadn't answered her in "Proper" German.

A "Real" German male wouldn't be doing anything unmanly like Nursing.

I listened to this and then told my Boss that I guessed my own description of myself was correct. I'm an American.

Somehow I'm wondering at what I would find of her beliefs and views if I talked to her. It might be a bit scary.

This parallels another thread (different forum, I think)...It addressed institutional and cultural racism with the underlying question being aren't we all racists underneath the veneer?

I agree. Watch out for Deutchland Ueber Alles on her iPod!

Is it institutional/Cultural or is it learned? How is it learned and why?

Hitlers ideal was the Blonde Haired and Blue Eyed, and yet he was a Brunette with Brown Eyes.

A while back we had a thread about Racism and we debated where it originated. I put forward the idea that it was the fear of differences. (The White Wolf Syndrome.) I was told I was wrong by many people with many different ideas and reasons.

I also stated that racism rears it's ugly head on all sides and was told I was wrong.

Yet I still stand by my comments. Racism is the fear of the differences between groups. These groups are more easily identified by their skin color and their facial/body structure. (Hence the White Wolf Syndrome.)

Unfortunately this fear of difference has become institutional.

The feeling of entitlement has also come into play. (I'm owed this.)

It is only when people come to realise they aren't owed a damn thing they don't earn, it is only when peole come to realize that being different is good. It is only when people realize that people are different and like different things that racism will go the way of the Dodo.

I'm more worried about what Tattoos might be seen upon her emaciated body.

The SS Symbol of the Deaths Head would be a bit unsettling. (Not that I haven't seen them before.)

Duetchland Uber Alles wouldn't be all that disturbing though as too many countries have had songs like that in their litany.

No, Jomar, I'm pretty sure we're not all racists under the veneer; that's usually claimed by people who are moderately racist and want to excuse themselves for it.

But for the German (and please excuse my rusty orthography)...

The second dialogue in my first university course im Deutsch left us all a bit worried:

Der Professor fragt: "Was ist Deutschlands grossest probleme?

A student answers, und der Prof sagt: "Lauter, Herr Smith; lauter!"

and Herr Smith stands up, announcing: "Deutschland hat neune nachbarn, und das ist Deutschlands grossest probleme!"

(Germany has nine neighbours, and that is Germany's greatest problem).

Und der Prof sagt: "Das ist richtig, Herr Smith, das ist richtig."

We students were all immediately post-war baby boomers, and very familiar with the "concept" of Lebensraum; we couldn't help but wonder if, at the time, Germany wasn't the neighbours' greatest problem rather than the other way around.

Hmm.
