My wife and I had to do some shopping today. We took off before noon and hoped to make it home before the normal afternoon thunderstorms boomed their way across southern Florida. We almost made it.
We were on our way home from our last stop, heading south. Ahead of us we could see the dark clouds heading towards us. It was a race to see who made it to the trailer first, us or the storm.
The closer we got the more active the storm seemed to grow. We could see the flashing of the lightening and we could even see the rain. It looked like a wall. We pulled into the park and then into our parking area. We grabbed our bags and started heading for the trailer all of thirty feet away. We could hear a roar over the rumbling of the thunder. I looked to the south as the skies went dark and could only stare for a second. That wall of water was heading towards us like a freight train.
I turned towards the trailer with my wife alongside of me as that wall of water hit. We're talking we were soaked to the skin within the time it took me to take three steps. I couldn't even see the trailer, I had to follow the walkway. I yelled to my wife for her to run to the patio and get out of the rain.
I made my way to the front door and stood in the blowing rain as I unlocked it and went in. I squished my way through to the slider and unlocked it to let my wife in. I truly enjoyed the view as she stepped in. Her tight white T-Shirt was soaked through and glued to her skin. She was also chilled by the cold rain and the winds. She glared at me for a minute before we both started laughing.
The storm ended almost as suddenly as it had started about 45 minutes later. When I went out to check the rain guage I was surprised to see we had received three inches of rain. No wonder I couldn't see the trailer when I was walking towards it.
Talk about a gully washer.
