It's just smart speak for mumbo-jumbo.

*shudders* That's the devil feedin' you his lies! It is all lucifer's handiwork.

I'm fascinated by ghosty stuff, always have been and never saw, heard or really felt a thing until four nights before my Dad died. I turned over in bed and saw an old lady all dressed in white looking down at me. She looked really sad. At first I looked away and though, oh shit, there's a burglar (what a halfwit) then realised it was an old woman, looked back and she was gone.

I kind of thought then that "they were coming for him" if you like.

Miles and Karen have posted my personal info here before, so it's no big revelation that I'm sort-of-a-big-deal in Toastmasters public speaking.

One of the dirty little secrets in Toastmasters is that MPDR speeches win speech competitions. (MPDR="My Poor Dying Relative") "I remember mah granny on her deathbed, with her last dyin' breath she said...blah blah blah".

I always did humorous speeches, but after losing three contests in a row to MPDR, I decided to write the mother of all melodramatic MPDR speeches.

I cranked the emotion level up to 11 with a speech about an entirely fictional encounter with the ghost of a recently deceased former girlfriend. To my shock and amazement, every single time I gave that speech I'd have A ) people sobbing and B ) people coming up to me afterwards and telling me how fortunate I was to "get closure with her"....I "obviously cared a great deal about her".

People seem to really want to believe in ghosts.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

I've always been fascinated too. Grew up in a culture where such things are believed to be real and true.

I haven't experienced anything myself but I have heard of plenty stories from friends and relatives.
A lot of urban legends which weirdly every culture seems to have in common (like the ghost of the virgin bride or the devoted father...).

My parents are Irish and I grew up too with lots of tales of spooky goings on, legends, banshees wailing when someone dies etc but that was my one and only encounter myself.

I've always had the flair for telling a good ghost story in real life. I mean a lot of the so called haunted spots gained the reputation of being so after a few of my tales (along with some elaborate pranks)... And you know how it is with these things... with each retelling, it gets truer and truer.

Thank you.

I've seen witch doctors practice some crazy stuff as a child that made me really afraid of old women. And I've seen people treat people with metal illness like they were possessed... So my personal experience is nil.

But I have known a few people who I trust, who have made some pretty far fetched claims. I hope it's real because to me the alternative is scary.

Thank you.

IRISH! Holy Shit! It explains everything.

I find this kind of vision fascinating. Terrifying, but fascinating. I wonder if there was an overwhelming emotion involved when you saw her.

I don't think there are ghosts; rather brain chemistry, environment and intuition/keen sensitivity.

When it comes to seeing the dead, I've only ever mistaken people on the street for the ones I miss.

I've always maintained a certain level of skepticism while also harbouring a secret fear that something may prove its existence to me. Because that would mean that either it's real or I am mad.

At first I was shocked because I thought it was an intruder! I kicked myself after for looking away and I wish I'd spoken to her. I didn't tell my mum til after he'd died but during the rest of that week she was in the back of my mind making me think even more it was his time.

No idea who she may be. Didn't look like any old relatives past and was dressed in quite old fashioned clothes. Strange and fascinating.

Do I tell of the ghosts in the house?
Do I tell of the spirits I've encountered as a youth camping?
Do I tell of the stories my Polish great-grandmother told us?
Do I tell of the stories my Akwesasne Mohawk grandmother told about Northern NY and the Schoharie Valley?
