Chapter 1: Reflections

Eliza Hierro sits in a car, waiting. "How long are we going to have to sit here man?". Her partner in this stakeout is Pete Walker, a private dective and part time barman when he needs to make ends meet.

"How am I supposed to know Eliza? Just be patient."

-----

Across town, three people are sitting in an old house. The owner is currently staying next door because she is too terrified to go into her house anymore. It's your typical ghostly occupant. A rowdy ghost going throwing furniture around and peeking under her nightie. Very disconcerting if the single occupant is a 65 year old widow who still thinks the trash collecters are 'nice men'.

The three people in question are Angelica Jones, Archimedes Maivre (Arky for short), and Jerry Sullivan. Angelica is known as the sensible one, Arky as the rich one, and Jerry as the smartass.

This unusual trio has lasted since their first years in college. At the time they were all highly regarded students; Angelica in English Literature, Arky in Programming, and Jerry in Maths. Their meeting circumstances were not unusual, Jerry and Arky lived in the same dorm, and both had the hots for Angelica after seeing her at a frat party. Jerry had asked her out, and she had accepted, but only on the condition that Arky came along too.

This was because Angelica had seen so much more in the two young men. For her they were an intruiging combination; Arky was thorough and thougtful, while Jerry was haphazard and impulsive. But they complimented each other well, and when the three began meeting up they found themselves more interested in the products of their fertile minds rather than the usual primal urges.

Now the three had all graduated, and had decided to do something fun for a couple of years before getting real jobs. The three were all mutually interested in the paranormal, and had decided to become investigators of unusual phenomenon. Arky was rich enough to keep them going, so enthusiatically the three of them had jumped into the project.

-----

A man walks out of the restaurant, dressed in a long black coat, and a red scarf.

"There's our man! Let's go!" Pete grabbed his bag and quickly stepped out of the car. Eliza followed, crossing to the other side of the road as not to appear so suspicious.

-----

The house was silent. The three of them sat in the living room, watching tv and playing cards.

"Full house!" Angelica laid down the cards triumphantly. Both men groaned.
"Show me the money!" she exclaimed gleefully.

-----

They followed the man for a long time, maybe half an hour. He walked quickly and purposefully, never looking around as if he suspected he was being followed. Until he ducked into a back alley behind a motel.

Eliza and Pete quickly followed, not wanting to lose their target. Walking into the alley, they suddenly encountered a tramp slumped against the wall, clothes dirty and ragged, carrying a bag that was even worse. And he had no legs. What was strange was that his trousers were extended normally, as if his legs were stretched out in front of him.

The target was gone. Obviously into the hotel. They turned, and Pete stumbled, almost falling, but managing to retain his balance. The tramp cackled with laughter.

"Better watch out before you get caught in your reflection!"

"Shut the fuck up!", shouted Eliza, irritated by the tramp's words. He just cackled in reponse.

As they walked out of the alleyway Pete took another look at the tramp. He could have sworn something had tripped him up.

-----

The tv and the lights started flickering as Angelica took the money from the two men.

"Obviously the power company doesn't approve," joked Jerry.
Angelica was about to retort when she noticed a man standing by the stairs.

She turned to look at him. He was tall, over six feet easily, and dressed in a businesslike suit covered by a long black coat. Around his neck hung a red scarf.

"What the....," exclaimed Jerry, ",who are you? And where did you come from?"

"That's not important." the man replied.
"Are you the ghost that's been in this house?" asked Angelica. No harm in checking.
"Oh THAT idiot. A nuisance. I've already sent him on."
"So who are you then?" said Arky. This was getting really confusing.
The man waved dismissively, "Never mind who I am. I need to talk to you three."
"What about?" This time it was Angelica who spoke.
"Just listen. I'm here to give you a warning."
"What kinda warning?" Jerry had his fists bunched up and spoke in an angry tone.
"You three are getting into very dangerous territory. There are things going on that you have no idea about, and if you carry on going the way you are now you will soon be a part of it. So be very careful in what you do."
He nodded to Angelica. "Make sure you protect her at all costs. She is very special."

With those words he turned and walked out of the front door.
"Wait!" Jerry got up and ran to the door, but when he looked outside there was nobody there.

-----

They stood in front of the motel. Pete looked around, and saw a cafe directly opposite.

"You stay in that cafe and keep an eye on the place. I'm going to get the car."

Eliza nodded, and Pete set off.

OOC:All the parts have been taken by those in the OOC so sorry if you want to join, although I may introduce another character or so later. For those who are in: choose your characters wisely :) Whoever takes Pete and Eliza can do what they wish with their background and so forth. Remember that these two are ordinary people just struggling to get along! Post in the OOC who you're taking, and I'll give you each a chance to post before I start the next plot progression. Let's get it on! :)

Jerry Sullivan

I turned back around from the door. "What the fuck was THAT all about? Oh wait, I know! 'Carry on the way you are now...'? Obviously, Angelica's getting supernatural advice to stop cheating at cards!"

Archimedes Maivre

"Nonsense," said Arky as he rose. "Angelica's card skills are supernatural enough without any outside help." He walked to the front door and peered onto the porch. "So, what do you make of our visitor? Nothing like any ghost that I've ever read about. Did he look familiar to either of you?"

Angelica Jones

"I thought you two set this up. I mean it almost has your names written all over it. I especially loved the graphics, he looked almost real. And the red scarf, that was a masterpiece." I walked around the room, looking for the hidden cameras.

"So where are they?" I searched for hollow places in the walls. "Where did you hide the cameras or projector?"

Eliza

Eliza sat in the diner near a window where she could catch every movement and told the waitress to bring coffee...and leave the pot. She had a feeling that this was going to be a very long night.

"Great. Just fucking great," She muttered to herself as she kept an eye on the motel. "What the hell else can go wrong?"

Arky

"Hmph, I wish we could take credit for that," said Arky. "But we haven't been able to create a projected image, hologram, whatever you want to call it, without using the lab equipment, and even then it was only a few inches high." Arky stood on the porch and scratched under his The Tick baseball cap. He looked back at the other two. "How did he get out of sight so fast? And the boards on this porch are old. Hear'm squeak? Jer, did you hear him step on the porch when he left?"

Jerry Sullivan

Jerry shook his head, "Nope, not even a footfall. So... either someone has LOTS better toys than we do, or... we've got a genuine paranormal manifestation on our hands!" He stepped over to his friends, grabbing them in his excitement, pulling them into a group hug. "We're gonna be famous! Ghostbusters, eat our shit!"

Arky

Arky smiled with good-natured tolerance at Jerry's enthusiasm. Hey, if he wanted to squish Arky up against Angelica, no problem. He gave them both a quick squeeze in return and said, "Well, we still haven't gotten slimed. If we're to get that lucky we'd better get busy, starting with the spot where our guest appeared."

Pete

Damn. Where did that guy go? I know he turned into that alleyway and then he upped and disappered.

I pulled the car around to the cafe and walked into see Eliza already at a table with the coffee.

"Thanks", I say as I sit down, "Did we miss something? Where did he go?"

Angelica

All of this was still a bit unbelievable. I couldn't help but think in the back of my mind that these two had somehow fixed the whole damn thing.... it was right up their alley. I had literary experience, not this technological shit that they had.

Research I had done, enough to fill books and books full, but this was the first actual paranormal anything that I had ever come across in real life.

"So we have actually discovered someone from the ghost realm. It's about damn time." I went over to the table, sat down and turned on my laptop. As soon as it finished booting up, I loaded my favorite Word program and began typing away. "Finally something to actually document other than us playing cards."

Jerry Sullivan

"You mean us losing and you winning at cards, don't you? I don't think that any series of events with that level of certainty of outcome can be referred to as 'playing'" I grinned, and leaned over to kiss the top of Angelica's head.

"Do we have any sodding idea what tall, dark and insubstantial was talking about? I mean, protect Angel, check. She's special, doublecheck. But, apart from stating the obvious, what the Hell was he talking about? All we've been doing is hanging out in supposedly-haunted houses, playing cards. How is that going to get us in trouble?"

Angelica

"Maybe its the classic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time? Or was that the right place at the wrong time?" I laughed.

"And we all know that I am special." I winked at Jerry and typed the last sentence then saved. "Besides, now we get to play Scooby Doo . We get to find out if the ghost is real, or if they have some kind of illegal business going on with a secret entrance in the basement."

Arky

"Well if it was a ghost it wasn't our ghost," I mused, staring at the staircase. "He said the other ghost had been sent on. And we weren't warned to stay away, but just to be careful. A friendly ghost in a business suit?" I touched the spot where he had stood, then looked up. "No ectoplasmic goop..."

I walked to the others. "The lights dimmed when he appeared," I said, touching Angelica's shoulder. "Before you get too deep into that, we don't really know what we saw. Think there could be some equipment in this house or nearby that might have projected an image in here? I mean, our stuff's pretty good in the lab, but dad will only sign off on so many phased photonic generating units." At the other's looks I said, "All right, all right. But we should at least try to place that guy's face, whether ghost or not."

Eliza

I looked over at Pete and shook my head. "If I had the answer to that we would be able to raise our fees and maybe get you out of that second job of yours."

I sighed and sat back, my eyes darting to toward the motel where our suspect had disappeared. "Or maybe get some real clients instead of the cheating wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend crap we do to make the bills."

Giving Pete another glance I added,"You know, TV makes this job seem a hell of a lot more glamourous than it really is. What has Tom Selleck got that we havent....besides well paid script writers?"

Turning my attention back on the motel, I took a sip of my coffee. I had a feeling I was going to need alot of caffeeine tonight.

*Overlord post* :)

As Eliza and Pete are talking, the target exits the motel suddenly. This time he walks at a much greater speed, seemingly eager to leave.

Eliza

"Holy shit, Pete, he's on the move," I said as I got up from the table so fast that my coffee cup spilt and a river of hot coffee quickly spread across the table to drop into Pete's lap causing him to leap up from the booth we were sitting at with a yell.

I blushed and stammered an apology as I threw down some money onto the table and grabbed my partner's arm. Dragging him out the door and after the suspect.

Arky

I remembered the paintings that lined the walls along the upper hallway. "I'm going to take a look upstairs. Maybe our guest is related to the old lady." I looked around us at the old walls, thinking that photonic generators were all fine and dandy, but something wasn't quite right with that scenario. "I'll be right back," I said, starting up the stairs.

"God damn Eliza", I say as I am dragged out the door. It takes a moment for me to concentrate on anything other than the burning sensation on my groin.

"Where is he I ask you", once I am able to breath again. I see you point down the street down a rapidly retreating figure. I take off running towards him and motion you to get the car and follow us.

Eliza

Giving Pete a nod I ran towards the car and slid into the drivers seat, inserting the key and turning the engine over in a few fluid motions. As soon as the car purrs to life, I turn it in the direction that he and our suspect have disappeared, making sure that I dont turn on the lights. I dont want our prey to know we are here.

Damn. Trying to chase down a man with a crotch full of coffee isnt the easiest thing in the world. Espically when the guy seems to be a marathon runner. I see Eliza pulling up in the car and run across the street so I can get in as she continues to follow him down the road.

"Dont let him get Eliza. We need this money."

Eliza

Pete didnt even need me acknowleging that statement. We both knew that we couldnt afford to lose a paying customer. Of course it would have been easier if we knew exactly why we were chasing this guy.

We had been sent a letter with half our regular fee for shadowing and reporting on someone. The note had said we would be paid the second half when the job was done. That was it. The return address was a PO box and so we were stuck with a real mystery.

After hashing it out for awhile, we decided to take the case. Honestly, we couldnt afford to pass up the money. The business was surviving..but just. Pete had to take on a second job to cover personal expenses and my trust fund from my grandparents was barely covering mine.

So here we were chasing after a shadow. We knew almost nothing but basic looks and where we could find him first off that night. The fact that we were not sure about anything still bugged me but a fee was a fee.

Stepping on the gas a bit, I moved closer to the man. At least close enough to keep track of him but not enough to be detected...I hoped.

Eliza and Pete follow the man as he strides down the wet streets. Strangely, he seems to be taking a very familiar route to them. Eventually they find themselves on the very same street as their office.

"What the hell? Does he live near us or something?", muttered Eliza to herself as she observed the man.
She got even more of a shock when he stood outside their office door, and then turned to look straight at them.

At first Pete carried on driving, trying to seem like a normal citizen, but the man wasn't buying. He just carried on, watching them as they creeped ever closer towards him.
"It looks like he's waiting for us," whispered Eliza to Pete. She had no idea why she was whispering but she was pretty scared by the whole turn of events.

Pete

"Slow down and let me out.", I tell Eliza as we get close to the office. I step out of the car and get our first good look at the indiviual that we have been chasing.

The one thing that stuck out was the red scarf that didnt seem to go with his dark blue or black suit.

"Is there something we can help you with sir?" , I ask as I get up to him. "I am one of the owners of this office"

"We should go inside. This is not a good place to talk.", the man replied. Pete shrugged and unlocked the door to the office.

Walking inside, Pete turned on the lights to see them flicker briefly before coming on properly. "Damn electric company," muttered Eliza to herself. She was trembling slightly, and feeling uneasy about this mysterious man.

Pete settled behind his desk and Eliza leaned against it. The man declined their offer of a seat.
"Let me ask you, why are you following me?"
Pete and Eliza exchanged looks, and Pete replied, "Someone paid us to."
"Alot?" asked the man.
"Not really. Less than our usual."
"Then take this," the man reached into his pocket and withdraw a roll of $100 bills. Throwing it into the table he then said, "Don't follow me anymore."

Eliza looked at the roll. There was at least $5000 there, enough to keep them going for quite a long time.
"Tell your client that you lost my trail. That you couldn't find me. Anything."

Pete, being curious, asked him, "Why are you doing this?"
The man paused briefly, before replying, "Let's just say I'm involved in some very dangerous work at the moment. If you follow me, it is very likely that your life will be in danger." With that, he turned and strode out of the door.

"Wait!" exclaimed Eliza, chasing him out of the door. But he was already gone.

Eliza

"Damn!," Eliza said as she stomped back into the office and moved over to Pete's desk. Looking down at the money, she picked it up and turned the roll of bills over and over in her hand. It was a lot of money. It was a hell of a lot of money. Still....

"Pete," She said slowly and thoughtfully,"I dont know about you but I am sick and tired of being played in the middle. Between our mysterious client and this guy I feel like we are being used."

Throwing the bundle on the desk, she added,"I know it's alot of money but we have a decision to make here. We accept this and the role of pawns or we admit we are fed up with the whole thing and find out exactly what is going on and to hell with both of them."
