I lived in Alaska a few years.
Sure never had any real Mexican food at a restaurant while I was there. Lucky for me, I have a wife that knows how to do that.

Sorry. They can call 'em what they like, but that doesn't look like a taco, and certainly not a Sonoran taco, like where I hang out.
Looks like a corn tortilla, but unfried....which makes it a tostada.

No, tostadas are toasted or fried corn tortillas. That's definitely a street taco.

No, tostadas are toasted or fried corn tortillas. That's definitely a street taco.

Toasted, is not fried, and I have never seen a tostada fried.
Tacos, are fried in oil, and those do not appear to be fried in oil.

Nope those are tacos, a soft shelled taco, but a taco nonetheless... Tostadas typically use a hard flat (sometimes shaped into a bowl), tortilla.

I've eaten these tacos all over Southern California and most certainly all over Mexico!

Maybe in the DPRC....but around here, southern Arizona, and across the border here, if you don't fry it in oil, and fold it over, it ain't a taco.
And, since my wife is Mexican, I sure won't argue with her about it either.

Thor’s tacos are def legit. Tacos are corn torts which are either steamed or fried. A tostada is a fried flat corn tort which is similar but usually has refrieds smeared on the bottom before the other toppings. I think of tostadas as more American, as I’ve never seen them on a menu or street cart in Mexico.

I don't understand why they are so popular. I've never been able to successfully make or eat one. They crumble in my hand and make a huge mess. I recently ordered chalupas, which seem to be just another form of taco, because the ingredients sounded so good. The damn thing ended up in my lap. I like burritos because of the soft tortilla which is easier to eat and more filling. Even soft shell tacos; there's not much to them.

See, that looks do-able. Although, I foresee things going downhill after that first bite.At least the shell is a little more pliable.

Off the subject of Taco's but still on S. of the Border foods.

I went to the State Fair last week. Someone always concocts something new and interesting out of Chile. There was a purveyor there selling Red Chile Brownies. My 1 sec. response was, "WTH???" My 3rd sec. response was, "Holy shit, baked Mole'!!!"

It was outstandingly good. I'm going to do it at home but cut back on the sugar a bit.
