I don't understand why they are so popular. I've never been able to successfully make or eat one. They crumble in my hand and make a huge mess. I recently ordered chalupas, which seem to be just another form of taco, because the ingredients sounded so good. The damn thing ended up in my lap. I like burritos because of the soft tortilla which is easier to eat and more filling. Even soft shell tacos; there's not much to them.

Tacos are fucking amazing. Messy but irresistible.

I can't enjoy them when they're falling apart.
Also, I don't like this trend toward HUGE burgers that you couldn't possibly fit into your mouth. The eat-ability of a food is important to me.

Maybe you're not eating them correctly. You should be sitting at a table, not eating them while driving. Tacos are not mobile food, like hamburgers and fries.

Sounds to me like you are not getting real tacos.
Those things at most restaurants, and Taco Bell, made with pre-bent dyed yellow cardboard tortillas, with a dollop of hamburger tossed in 'em.....are NOT tacos. They may resemble tacos, and they do that only slightly, but they are far from the real deal.

Use seasoned shedded or ground beef. Don't overcook your tortillas, it makes them way too crisp to fold over without breaking apart. I cook my tortillas in a half inch of hot oil for a few seconds flat before folding them over in the pan and flipping them back and forth until they are slightly crisp but still flexible. I put them on a taco rack and let then drain for a while to maintain their open shape, they are slightly crisp but still flexible enough to maintain their integrity when filling and eating.

That's how it's done! I've watched it done a lot! ;)
Exactly....shredded/pulled beef is best for tacos.
I really like 'em made with carnitas too.
Either way, it's slow cooked with all kinds of peppers & spices....and things I don't know about....since I am not much of a cook.
When my wife uses ground round, she makes a pattie in the tortilla after she mixes in some chiles, jalapenos, and spices, and a few diced onions, and fries 'em just like normal. Good, but not like shredded beef or carnitas.

Soft shell tacos are for beginners. Start there. 😂

Or wrap your tacos in diaper napkins.

You can't navigate a taco?

Yes! you're right. The thing is, I got those chalupas at a higher-end joint, and they still fell apart on me. That pissed me off because the stuffing was so good.

That's a tostada.....
It's like a taco. Corn tortilla, (note....it's not yellow) and can be the same ingredients as a taco....but not fried.

Nope, those are tacos made by Mexicans imported to Alaska. And, those are corn tortillas.

First off....'high end', means little. Been to many so called high end Mexican restaurants, mostly in the southwest, and what they cook is hardly authentic Mexican.
Best restaurants I know of, are just little hole in the wall places, nothing fancy, but the food.....real.

Chalupas do fall apart easily, especially if they are fried too crisp. They are kind of.... and open face taco, but the tortilla is fried in the shape of a bowl, before the goodies go in.

And again.....real tacos, cooked right, although they can fall apart especially when over fried, are not like those things they pawn off as tacos, with the pre-bent tortillas. Those things, do fall apart.

Soundin' like you would make a lousy Mexican!
You would starve to death!

I lived in Alaska a few years.
Sure never had any real Mexican food at a restaurant while I was there. Lucky for me, I have a wife that knows how to do that.

Sorry. They can call 'em what they like, but that doesn't look like a taco, and certainly not a Sonoran taco, like where I hang out.
Looks like a corn tortilla, but unfried....which makes it a tostada.

Weird.

Fuck yeah.

Let me eat your taco, Thor.

Actually, I like making a double decker.

Soft shell, spicy hot guac for glue, hard shell, then grilled and sliced sirloin. Salsa and shredded cheese. Done.

Maybe a bit of sauce.
