Silly question -

A story plot: Man invents a time machine and goes 20 years into the past. Meets his mother, has sex.

Is this Sci-Fi or Taboo?

It sounds like Back To The Future fanfic.

The whole incest thing aside, it is an interesting thought. A man travels back in time, has sex with a woman, who then becomes pregnant and gives birth to her only child.

The man is his own father.

If the man is 19 years old ... you're talking about some potential paradox.

I always thought the general rule is that the stronger "kink" determines the category if there are multiple "plot devices". Two women having sex ... lesbian sex category. Two sisters having sex ... incest. Two sisters having heavy D/s play involving leather, slings and assorted other accoutrements ... BDSM. Sci-Fi isn't really a kink though.

I suppose if the story is focusing more on the science aspect ... does he go back for more than a quickie? Then it might go into science fiction. If the time machine is just a vehicle to get him into his mother's panties (god that is so fricking crude), then it is incest.

I think the real question is - does he go back more than once or is the old bag a bum-F?

I don't know if a single paradox would destroy the whole universe, but it would have devastating results...all matter exists...but can't exist in two places at the same time...say a man decides to travel back in time, and picks up a rock from a stream and puts it in his pocket...he travels back 2 days in time....how can the rock be in his pocket and in the stream at the same time...one would have to dissapear...so would the rock in the mans pocket dissapear or would the rock in the stream dissapear...

The rock only exists if someone sees it. So the rock would be with the man at all times.

I'd say the rock would disappear form his pocket because it existed in the stream 2 days earlier before he took it, so technically travelling back 2 days extra would mean the future hasnt occurred therefore there is no anticipation of the rock being picked up and kept

No, that movie is terrible, and unwatchable...

And there are a couple incest stories that have time travel where the son screws his younger mother.

The interesting part, I would think, would come from when the son goes back tot he present and reminds his mother of the man that knocked her up, and shows her the photo from back when, and they get it on again.

Bri, Montana is a genre-transcending piece of work... which is why I seconded its nomination as such, in spite of your early withdrawal... You can't judge other incest works by the MS series... it's been beyond the "incest" thing for 10 chapters now... even though it's still somehow integral to the story (don't ask me how you did that, it's brilliant, actually)

There's a lot of categories that I couldn't write in...I have to feel the passion in it to write it...If I can't give it my all...then there is no point...

But, as always, this is only my point of view...

But then, don't you want the challenge? Don't you ever wonder why I keep telling you to write stories that aren't your 'type'?

To incest or not to incest.........

I looked at my story list. Jeesh........ I know I am a reader/ratings/votes whore, but even worse when you numerically evaluate it.

43 incest/taboo stories, 40 with H's.

And two of the non H's are newer stories, where dad/son get after it as part of the story. Surprising, readership slower, votes slower, ratings lower.

Hmmmm, I wonder....... Nah, can't be guys don't like reading about guys But of interest to me, I have more feedback on these stories that any other, all positive, and begging for more of the same.... from mom's wanting ripped dads/sons to do them! Honest!

No time travel, interesting Back to the Future ring to it.

[threadjack] (Putting on Sci-Fi cap--the one with propeller, as well as Professor's jacket with the leather elbow patches and glasses). It depends on which theory of time travel you're going for.

1) There is a dementional theory that says that every change in the past creates a NEW future. This means that two different futures exist at the same time. This is the "Back to the Future" model.

Kid goes back in time, changes his parents lives, and then arrives in a future where everything is great. What happened to HIS future where everything was rotten? It still exists AND he can remember it. That time line happened as it happened. But he created a new future and followed along that branch.

Ditto with the rock. In one time line, it exists by the stream and still does.
In another time line, a person picked it up two days ago and has it in his pocket two days later. Recommended for this theory: the movie Frequency (very nicely done!), and the book The Lathe of Heaven (brilliant Ursula K. LeGuin novel).

2) Paradox This is where there is only one timeline and a paradox is created which either does or does not have results. Like the time traveler vanishes because he's messed things ups. Thus, he takes up the rock, goes to the future. Rock is there as well--two places at once and the universe explodes (or something).

3) Unchangable This is the theory where the past cannot be changed no matter what the time traveler does. It's set. So he puts the rock in his pocket, but there's a hole in the pocket, so the rock returns to where it was. These are stories that revolve around irony "Oh, my God! I went back in time to save the Titanic, and as it turns out, it was I who sank it!"

As we've yet to go back in time, there's no telling which one of these theories is correct (spinning propeller).[/threadjack]

I think that writing one for every category could be a good self-challenge. To see whether you can do it or not. Stretching your limits, testing your abilities and skills is never bad thing. Writing should be a pleasure, but some might get pleasure from going outside their comfort zone ...the feeling of accomplishment in writing something that you might not normally write - but to still have written it well - that would be a bit of a rush in itself.

That's pretty much why I'm doing it - see how many categories I can write well enough for to please the readers.
I'm currently thinking I'll be giving incest/taboo a swerve. Who knows, down the track I may come up with a scenario that flies and I feel happy writing, but I kinda doubt it.
I was curious to know what else sits in that category and I guess, from the posts here, the answer is nothing much.

Shake well, write graphic sex scenes, good descriptive "get after it".

I find it hard to write science fiction, mind control, non-human.... tried, the versions are still on the hard drive, waiting, maturing.......

Here's my advice, for what it is worth. Don't write to try to please the readers, write to please yourself. It's good to push the boundaries of your work, always try to write beyond your abilities, but do it for yourself, no one else...

It is important to note that this isn't a problem because they're not actually the same rock. A thing can't be in two places at the same time, sure--but its not the same thing.

starrkers, I got around the "incest" part during survivor 2005 by writing about in-laws. It's taboo enough for the category but not true incest. However, if that is still too close, you can always use an immunity for it if you get one.

My Incest/ Taboo story that I wrote for the Christmas Contest bagged the most page views of any story I've written so far.

Over 29,000 at last count.

I was 'criticized' for the fact it 'was only cousins' getting it on, but the vote score is 4.77, so some one liked it.

Being no fool, I have written another one for the Valentine's Day contest.

Mom and the kids this time, so we'll see how it goes.

If you want to stretch your limits, go for it.

If the subject is uncomfortable to you, pass it by.

Try the 'Loving Wives' category. That's a dumping ground I hear (lol).

I tend to avoid the incest/taboo section. I've read a few stories there, but incest generally turns my stomach (long story for another day).
Assuming I wanted to write a story for it, what else can go in that section?

The "Taboo" part of the name of that category was only added recently. It doesn't refer to just any taboo, but to incest-type situations that aren't really incest, such as non-blood relatives. Anything that goes into that category must, to quote the category description, "keep[ing] it in the family." It's how you define family that makes the distinction between incest proper (for lack of a better word) and taboo.
