For the first time a former United States president has been convicted of a crime.
Accountability at last.

And this is just the first. There are multiple other criminal trials against him.
As a non-American I am of the opinion that this makes him unsuitable to run for president.

The judge will decide a punishment on a later date. Any idea how long that might take? (EDIT. Sentencing on 11 July 2024)

His conviction maybe stayed on appeal, which I think would allow him to vote this November. No way an appeal gets heard now before the next election.

Actually he might be able to. Florida apparently defers to the state of conviction. And NY allows felons to vote. Even if Florida doesn't.

I'm at a 5. 10 in feeling elated at his conviction. 0 in democratic confidence because his presidency should never have occurred and we have put ourselves through 8 years of needless misinformation hell, losing millions to covid, and no longer have the good standing we once did on the world stage (yeah, I know, debatable, but trump made our allies worried and emboldened our enemies). And knowing that his conviction still won't change the minds of many of our more clueless citizens, yeah, I'm at a 5 on the whole.

I was thinking of the previous NY prosecutor, Cyrus Vance Jr, who declined to prosecute Trump, because he had to rely partially on a statute that had never been tested in court before, and he didn't want to risk his prosecutorial win streak on something as trivial as "justice".
