Systematic Desensitization is a psycological procedure that uses Pavlovian conditioning to eliminate phobias.

I was thinking it might be interesting to write a story in which this is used to rid someone of sexual hang-ups. I was thinking of two ideas in particular, both of which are similar:

1. We have an indivdual who was raised in a highly homophobic enviroment. This person has largely gotten over this background...until s/he starts working with or for a gay man or lesbian woman, and finds that his/her childhood experiences produce a feeling of revulsion that makes it nigh-impossible to work with/for the aforementioned person. Feeling disgusted with him/herself for feeling this way and wanting to keep his/her job, our hero attempts to use Systematic Desensitization to rid him/herself of these feelings of revulsion.

The most obvious twist here, of course, is for our hero(ine) to become gay. However, it's obvious because it's cliched, and it's also rather unrealistic. I was thinking therefore that, the therapy appears to work, and our hero(ine) goes out and gets plastered by way of celebration...then wakes up in bed with another (wo)man, prompting a relapse...unfortunately, I can't think of what to do after that.

2. The other idea, less developed, is of a person raised in a heavily racist enviroment falls in love with a member of another race, but finds (s)he is unable to consumate the relationship, because of his/her back gorund, and decides to use Systematic Desensitization to get over it.

1. (s)he tries dating the opposite gender again, only to find that the person (s)he is dating is a transsexual.

or

2. the opposite gender person (s)he dates falls for the same sex lover, not the protagoinst. The result is jealousy, which the protagonist comes to realize is feelings for rthe same sex lover. The suspense is : do they end up as a triad? does the same sex lover end up with the opposite gender date turned mate? Do the same sexers live happily ever after?

Hmm.

So, our hero(ine) after her/his unfortunate encounter manages to once more rid him/herself od the revulsion, dates someone (not seriously cuz I think it's a good idea to avoid "becomes gay" cliche) that person is a trannie..would this trigger another relapse, or do we give our hero(ine) a happy ending when (s)he realizes (s)he's cured?

The thing is, we are trying to aviod the "becomes gay" cliche, so the one night gay stand would be...well, a one night stand brought about because of drink.

Brainstorm: possibly our hero(ine) got slipped a roofie. The resultant trauma would surely make it even harder to recover.

Of course, the bulk of the story would be how (s)he attempts to desensitize him/herself.
