I'm dizzy, nausious, sweating perfusly(sp?), and have a hard time concentrating on tasks at times. We're in the middle of a heat wave, and I'm just wondering if I am getting heat/sun stroke or if there is something else wrong with me.

Any ideas?

P.S. I am trying to keep hydrated, and applying a cold cloth to my forhead, and it helps some, but not a lot.

Just guessing (we don't get heat waves) a tepid shower and lots and lots to drink, suck on ice cubes, eat ice blocks and ahhh wear almost nothing. Im not being rude but I think that would help to cool you off)

Good luck.

Thanks summer and debbiexxx.

Memo to self... stop drinking fluids. No wonder I've been feeling like crap. I'm somewhere between exhustion and stoke. I'll see what happens later on tonight, whether or not to take a trip into ye-ole emerg room.

Avoid the ice. It dehydrates slightly.

Pump water through your system, and when you cant swallow... congrats its heat stroke.

Then you have ice in your throat all the time cause you can no longer swallow... and you drool, and it takes days to recover.

I'm not fond of it.

I just learnt something. I had no idea about the ice. Thanks. :)

Take care, Tap-Out

you really do want to drink water constantly...it keeps you hydrated...getting dehydrated in this heat is really easy. Last summer I had to be forcibly rehydrated twice and it was the worst thing ever...if I had just kept drinking water I'd have been fine. Soda has salt and alcohol is awful for you in this heat...water is the best thing to drink.

Also avoid anything with caffiene in it.

I would quibble that Water is the second best thing to drink -- Gatorade (tm) or other "sports drink" is better than plain water.

Sports drinks are better because they're specifically designed to deal with heat stress and dehydration problems -- like nausea and stomach cramps. I personally prefer Gatorade -- Lemon Ice flavor to be precise -- because I know the history and science behind their formula. I don't have the same confidence in the science behind other sports drink formulas -- I particularly avoid any "Sports Drink" that touts "Herbal" ingredients, like ginseng or echincea, et al, or it's "performance enhancing" qualities.

If you are sweating then you don't have heat stroke. Believe me, if you had heat stroke you wouldn't be here typing anything halfway legible, and you stop sweating but you don't get any cooler. BTDT. Heat stroke is kind of like hypothermia - you get really stupid and stop making sense.

Keep drinking fluids and wet yourself down all over.

I get too hot all the time; riding a motorcycle in the heat is like being in a blast furnace. Keeping wet and hydrated is about the only thing a rider can do short of getting out of the heat.

Tap-Out, if I may suggest?
Living under the South Florida sun, I've found that when I worked outside my body needed to have potassium and vitamin C replenished, as these were lost because of the high heat I worked in. I know that there are those who may disagree, but I've worked on machinery that was running at 180-200 degrees in full sun before. (I was working on a golf course at the time.) I found a powdered drink at a health food store called Emer-Gen-C. It comes in several flavours and is a single serving packet. It works very well! If I had not run across that at the time, I wouldn't have been able to survive the afternoons mowing fairways.
One more tip, if you feel exceptionally overheated, try running cool/cold water over your wrists. It cools your blood down almost instantly. Another trick learned from my "Caddy Shack" days.:D
