My idea for this is to re-imagine the setting of Sword Art Online as a real-world academy for Energists, warriors who channel inner energy to become better swordsmen, similar to Jedi Lightsaber techniques, but with actual swords. The school also trains them in the use of other weapons, such as bows and throwing daggers, but the focus is always on swordplay and Force powers.
As for the setting of the plot, there are two ways we can do this. We can either place it in a magical fantasy realm where, maybe, Aincrad is actually a huge city and is where the Academy lies. The alternative is to base this in our modern world and have the Academy be secret, akin to Hogwarts. We'll go with whichever route is more popular to any who show interest.
